Then, next Friday (March 8th) the teams head to Wisconsin to face the Marquette Golden Eagles (2-3).

BOULDER — The Colorado Buffaloes lacrosse team is set to head back on the road again this week where they will take on Central Michigan, Thursday at 1 p.m. followed up with another game, Saturday morning at 10 a.m. against No. 6 Michigan.

"A big weekend for us on the road," head coach Ann Elliott Whidden said. "Excited to play again. We had a lot of positives last Thursday but we know we need to make improvements and have been focused on getting better at the details. This will be a good challenge for us. We are very focused on improving from last week and coming out strong against Central Michigan. We need to get better at giving ourselves more possessions and and emphasis on executing in transition on both sides. We made strides last week but know it is key for us overall."

The Buffs are coming off their first loss of the season against No. 4 ranked Northwestern last Thursday at home. Three different CU players (Pisani, Hritzuk, Shoup) had at least three goals but it wouldn't be enough to take down the defending national champions.

After falling 19-14 to the Wildcats, the Buffaloes were still ranked inside the top-20 for both weekly national polls. They sit at No. 19 for the IWLCA and No. 20 for USA Lacrosse.

Second-year player Maddie Shoup recorded a career-high three goals against Northwestern, all coming in the first quarter of play.

Senior Madeline Pisani still leads the Pac-12 Conference with 16 goals scored, averaging four a game. Her teammate Jess Peluso also leads the conference in caused turnovers with seven.

Goalkeeper Danielle Heintz leads the Pac-12 Conference with 32 goals saved with a .395 save percentage. She is coming off a career-high 11 saves against Northwestern.

CU will be playing two teams this weekend on very different paths to start the season. Central Michigan is still searching for their first win, as they currently sit at an 0-5 record. The Chippewas are led by junior attacker Skye DePrado, who has 10 goals in the first five games.

The Michigan Wolverines are 4-0 with two huge ranked wins over No. 4 Denver and No. 13 USC. They will take on Arizona State Thursday afternoon before they play the Buffaloes. Michigan also took down Jacksonville and Cincinnati in the first two contests of the year. They're led by Kaylee Dyer and Jill Smith, who each have 11 goals.

"This will be another challenge in terms of travel but we know what we are capable of and will focus on things we can control," Whidden stated. "Our approach is very much one game at a time, after Thursdays game we will reset and focus on Saturday. We know how good Michigan is and the challenge there. They have the best defense in the country and have been well tested like ourselves early in the season. We are excited about the opportunity we have this weekend with our two games."

INSIDE THE SERIES
Thursday will be the first time Colorado and Central Michigan line up against one another on the same field.

Despite just a 10-year history for CU, Saturday will be the seventh matchup between Colorado and Michigan. The Buffs won the first three games in 2015, 2016, and 2018 all away from Boulder, but it's the Wolverines who have taken the last three games in the series, including two of those three wins occurring in Boulder. Michigan won last year's meeting at Kittredge field by the score of 12-5.

Thursday's game against Central Michigan will be streamed here. Saturday's game against Michigan will be streamed here.

It sounds like, after a slow start (CU was down 2-4 after the 1st quarter),, the Buffs ended up dominating in almost every stat category and get a solid 13-7 road win.

Now on to a TOUGH test in Ann Arbor!

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Colorado's Madeline Pisani scored four goals Thursday afternoon to power the Buffaloes' lacrosse team to a 13-7 win over Central Michigan.

With the win, The Buffs are now 4-1 on the young season while Central Michigan moves to 0-6. CU impressively out-shot the Chippewas 42-13.

"Credit to CMU they put us on our heels in beginning," head coach Ann Elliott Whidden said post-game. "I wasn't overly pleased with way we came out, we have talked about specific keys all week and didn't execute great in those. We have to do a better job from the start. Overall I thought this group remained committed and made plays we needed. We did great on draws which was an emphasis for us and key for us today. We just have to do better executing. We had good looks and opportunities but didn't finish at level we are capable of and need too."

After falling behind by three goals early in the first quarter, CU went on a 5-1 run in the final 16 minutes of the first half to secure the lead and hold it until the end of regulation. Colorado outscored Central Michigan 7-2 in the second half to pull away for their fourth win.

Emily Dodd opened the scoring for Colorado, but it was the Pac-12's leading goal scorer that shifted the momentum in favor of the Buffaloes.

Pisani scored goals 17, 18, and 19 on the campaign all in the matter of two and a half minutes of play, spanning between the end of the first and beginning of the second quarters. She scored once more in the third quarter.

It is now the fifth game to start the season in which Pisani has recorded three or more goals, leading the team and the conference with 20 goals overall. She has scored at least four times in four of the five games. Pisani is currently one of six players in the nation with 20 or more goals.

FANTASTIC FRESHMEN
The Colorado native — Aidan Carr — had a career-high 10 draw controls, the most by a Colorado player so far this season. Carr doubled up CMU on draw controls as a team, who had just five for the game. Last CU player with 10 or more draw controls in a single game was Zoe McElhaney, with 15 in a win over Arizona State last season.

Another freshman, Dodd, logged a career-high two goals and four draw controls in the win. Carr and Dodd accounted for 14 of Colorado's 19 draw controls on the day.

SOPHOMORE STARS
CU had season-highs in draw controls (19) and caused turnovers (16) during Thursday's game. Five different Buffaloes (Hanlon, Gardner, Reed, Assini, Carson) had multiple caused turnovers including Molly Reed and Mary Carson, each with three, marking career-highs for both second-year players.

Lily Assini impressed once again on both sides of the ball. She found the back of the net for her first score of the season but also lead her team with three ground balls. On top of all that, Assini contributed two draw controls and two caused turnovers in the win over CMU.

GOAL SCORERS
Madeline Pisani - 4
Rachel Kennedy - 3 (Career-High)
Emily Dodd - 2 (Career-High)
Ashley Stokes - 1
Molly Reed - 1
Lily Assini - 1
Sydney Zimmerman - 1
...

FINAL QUOTE
"We have to execute better Saturday," Whidden stated. "That will be key for us as well as just possession overall. This team is capable of a lot but we aren't as consistent as we need to be, we will keep focusing on that and building. This is a great group."

UP NEXT
The Buffaloes will take on the Michigan Wolverines Saturday morning in Ann Arbor, at 10 a.m. on the Big 10 + Network.

BOULDER — The No. 19 Colorado Buffaloes are set to play the Marquette Golden Eagles Friday afternoon in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at 2 p.m. It will be the final non-conference game for CU before they open up Pac-12 play.

The Buffs sit at 4-2 through six games, with both losses coming against top-10 ranked teams. Marquette is also 2-4 through their first six games.

Colorado is coming off a week on the road where they split against Central Michigan and No. 6 Michigan. They took care of business against the Chippewas, but fell short in Ann Arbor against the Wolverines.

"I think since Michigan we have regrouped and been focused in film and practice," Ann Elliott Whidden stated. "We are excited to play. We have to find success on the road to be successful this season, and this will be a great test for us. Our leadership will be huge for us and I know our crew is focused on the mission at hand."

Senior midfielder Madeline Pisani continued her streak of scoring three or more times in a single game, and has done so in all six games for her squad this season. She has 24 goals overall, still atop the leader board for the Pac-12 Conference.

Those 24 goals on the season are the most goals scored by a CU player in the the first six games of a single season. The previous-high was 23 goals scored by Charlie Rudy in the first six contests of the 2021 season.

Jess Peluso currently leads the Pac-12 Conference with 12 caused turnovers and is third in ground balls with 13. She logged a career-high four CTO's against Michigan last week.

Marquette opened their season with a win over Cincinnati, but would drop the following three games. Two of those losses came against Louisville and Northwestern on the road, the two opponents CU has played at home so far this year.

The second win for the Golden Eagles was over Detroit Mercy, and most recently lost to Niagara this past Sunday.

"Looking forward to another opportunity to play," coach Whidden said. "This is a good Marquette team and their record doesn't reflect what they are capable of doing. They were in NCAA tournament last year, they have played solid teams leading up to us and we have to come out strong and focused on the details. The difference for us will be in our commitment to the details."

INSIDE THE SERIES
These two teams haven't played each other since the 2017 season, when the Buffaloes captured an impressive 20-6 win in Boulder.

CU is 3-0 all-time against Marquette, winning those games consecutively in 2015, 2016, 2017. Two of those wins were at home while the other was on the road. Marquette has yet to score more than eight goals in a single game against Colorado.

Friday's game can be streamed here. Live stats can be found here.

Four Buffaloes Tally Hat Tricks

By: Tanner Kay, Athletic Communication Associate

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Nine different Buffaloes scored for a season-high 17 goals Friday afternoon to lift No. 19 Colorado over Marquette by a score of 17-11.

Among the nine separate scorers for the Buffs, four of those players had multi-goal performances: Reed (3), Stokes (3), Pisani (3), and Hritzuk (3). It was an all-around team effort for Colorado, as they also had seven different players with at least one assist, and eight overall for the game which marks a season-high.

Second-year player Molly Reed had a career-high three goals and three draw controls in the win. It's her first career game with multiple goals.
