ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The No. 19 Colorado Buffaloes invade Big Ten Country with a marquee matchup against the Michigan Wolverines on Thursday (5 p.m. MT/B1G+).

The Buffs (5-0-1) roll into Ann Arbor, leading the nation in assists (24), goals (26) and points (76). Individually, Shyra James has continued her torrid start to the season. She extended her goal-scoring streak to a nation-leading 10 games. James is also tied for the NCAA lead in goals (8) and points (16).

The road trip is CU's first real extended time away from Prentup Field this season. The Buffs earned a 2-2 draw at No. 9 BYU in their first road test, but the team was back in Colorado after less than 20 hours on the road. This trip opens at UM and then will close on Sunday, at Michigan State (11 a.m. MT/B1G+).

"When you go on the road things are more difficult," head coach Danny Sanchez commented. "I thought for the most part we handled the adversity well on the BYU trip and got a result against a very good team. We're going to use the same mentality this weekend with a Michigan team that went to the [NCAA] quarterfinals last year and a Michigan State team that is off to a great start to its season."

The Buffs' 26 goals are already more than the team has scored in nine previous seasons. Colorado hopes to keep the offense on a roll but knows that tougher times are ahead.

"I think we're going to have to create more chances earlier in the game," Sanchez explained. "We know we're not going to get as many chances as we've been getting. We have to be more efficient with the chances we get. But we have to create more early and put more pressure on teams earlier in the game."

Colorado was outshot 31-6 at BYU, with the Cougars controlling a large portion of the possession. The Buffs know another six-shot performance will not get the job done this weekend.

"We're going to have to play better," Sanchez added. "We were able to gut out a result at BYU, which was great. We came back from being down 1-0 and 2-1, however, we're going to have to play better this weekend if we expect to get results on the road."

CU has averaged 21. 3 shots per game this season and is coming off of a weekend that saw 63 shots fired off. Michigan State and Michigan are first and third in the Big Ten in shots per game, respectively.

Thursday will be the first meeting on the pitch between the Buffs and Wolverines.

No score with the match ~5 minutes in. (Since I can't watch this one, don't know how closely I'll keep track of it.)

(Edit - although both the 2nd and 3rd team goalies performed admirably while she's been out, nice to see Dani Hansen healthy enough to be in the starting lineup.)

Per live stats, the match has ended in a 1-1 tie, with the Buffs tieing it relatively late (78th minute) on a Kuhlmann penalty kick. At least based on shots stats, looks like it was a close match, with shots showing a narrow 15-16 Michigan advantage (although the blue had a 3-7 advantage in shots on goal).

"Highlight" of the Buff goal -

Assume the team had higher aspirations, but a road point is usually, at minimum, a decent thing, especially when playing a team that has already defeated one of the anticipated Pac 12 "big dogs" (WSU) earlier in the season.

Pretty sure that Michigan was a preseason Top 25.

That's a very solid road result. If we can get the win at Sparty, this will go down as a great trip.

Yep, they started at #9, assume largely based on finishing 3rd in the Big 10 and then making it all the way to the Elite 8 in last season's NCAA tourney, losing to eventual National Champion FSU in overtime. (Looks like they fell out of the rankings after 2 not great losses so far this season, 1-0 to (3-2) Butler, and 3-2 last Thursday to a 2-3-1 Iowa State squad. For RPI purposes, of course, I hope they now go undefeated the rest of the regular season.)

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Civana Kuhlmann slotted her second penalty kick of the season to help preserve the unbeaten record for the No. 19 Colorado Buffaloes. The goal in the 78th minute held up for the 1-1 draw on the road at Michigan.

Colorado (5-0-2) found itself trailing on the road for the second time this season. The Buffs battled back, just as before at No. 9 BYU, to get the equalizer and a point on the road.

"[Tonight] was a super tough match," Kuhlmann said after the final whistle. "Michigan is a really good team. We think they're definitely a top-25 team. Wish we could have gotten the win on the road, but all respect to Michigan. They made it really tough in this environment today."

Michigan (4-2-1), who dropped out of the top 25 this week, got on the board first and took a 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Wolverines outshot CU 16-15 on the night and forced Dani Hansen to make six saves in her return to the lineup.

"I thought Michigan played really well in the first half," head coach Danny Sanchez explained. "We weren't up to speed for the match. Having said that, I thought the second half, especially the first 35 minutes we were really good at creating chances and playing in the final third. I was really pleased with how we played in the second half. It's tough to get results on the road, and we did that. Now all eyes turn to Sunday."

UM was able to slow down the Buffs' high-powered offense. Junior Shyra James fired two shots but was unable to find the net, bringing an end to her 10-game scoring streak.

"I thought when Shyra or I had the ball they did a really good job of getting numbers behind the ball," Kuhlmann commented. "We couldn't create as many opportunities today. I had a few missed shots but they did well to slow us down, get behind the ball and move their feet. They blocked shots. I felt every time I was on the ball there were multiple people in front of me. Never a clear 1v1. That makes it tough as a forward."
...

Jenny Beyer served up CU's third corner kick of the night in the 77th minute, leading the buildup for the Buffs' goal. The ball was bounced out of the offensive third and sent back in by Lawson Willis.

The serve was just off the target of Kayleigh Webb who gave chase and was taken down by UM keeper, Izzy Nino, sending Kuhlman to the penalty spot and equalizing the game.

"It was a great service from Lawson on the second phase of the set piece," Sanchez recounted. "Kayleigh was brave and challenged to win the penalty and Civana buried it. I thought we really matched their intensity in the second half. The first half wasn't great. The second half was fantastic."

Up Next
The Buffs will continue the road trip at Michigan State on Sunday (11 a.m. MT).

Notes
Colorado now has 27 goals this season…Kuhlmann's goal was her sixth in seven games at CU (26th career)…Kuhlmann has points in five games this season…CU now has three PK goals this season with Emerson Layne recording the other…Beyer picked up her second yellow card of the season.

Highlights-

need to start winning games like this. I know Michigan is a good team, but need to start getting results against good teams
Agree. The next step is to win against quality opponents on the road. Sunday v Michigan State, in theory, shouldn't be as challenging.

The match began, and there's no score showing around 4 minutes in.

Live stats says they're currently experiencing a weather delay.

The soccer team joins volleyball in suffering its 1st loss of the season today, as MSU ends up with the 2-4 win. (Webb (on an assist from James) earned a late consolation goal with 20 seconds left.)

Interesting that, going into this weekend, I believe the Michigan game was thought to be the tougher one. However, the Buffs in that one were pretty even in shots, while against the Spartans it looks like they must have often been on the defensive, being outshot 10-25.

Of course, who knows what was affected by the bad-sounding weather (although the old sports clichet of "both teams had to play in the same conditions" is I'm sure what Coach Sanchez will say and feel.)
