Edit- As the tweet @MarkW shared in post #12 informs us, it was decided that the USC match scheduled for Sunday is being moved to Monday due to the amount of snow on Prentup Field. The release (https://cubuffs.com/news/2021/3/14/soccer-sundays-match-pushed-to-monday.aspx) says the rescheduled match time is TENTATIVELY set for 3:00 PM MT.

Another weekend, another chance to face some of the best in the country by being in the Pac 12, as the Buffs (4-2-1, 1-1-1) continue conference play in what looks to be (based on the rankings) the toughest 2 match set of the season. The #3 Bruins (6-0-0, 3-0-0) are 1st up with a scheduled noon start Friday, and then the #12/ 14 Trojans (3-1-0, 2-1-0) come for a Sunday 1:00 matinee in what could be a SNOWY match.

Notes
  • Per the preview quoted below, sounds like contingency plans might be getting considered in case it snows as much as forecasted by the time the USC match is supposed to begin on Sunday.
  • Interesting to see what this is and might mean, although from what I can see it is a free service. Per the below preview, "Friday's match (noon) will be the inaugural live-event on the Pac-12's new broadband streaming channel, Pac-12 Insider. Pac-12 Insider is available through the Pac-12's partner platforms, Roku, Pluto TV, Samsung TV Plus, XUMO, Redbox and Vizio.".
Go Buffs!!!

BOULDER — The Colorado soccer team returns home for the first time in Pac-12 play this weekend. The Buffaloes will play host to No. 3 UCLA (Friday) and No. 14 USC (Sunday).

Colorado (4-2-1, 1-1-1 Pac-12) is coming off a successful trip to the Bay Area last weekend. Colorado upset then-No. 10 California, 2-1, to start the week. CU then took No. 23 Stanford down the wire, falling 2-1.

"In the big picture, it was a good weekend for us on the road," head coach Danny Sanchez said after the Stanford match. "We played two very good teams and now we have to build off that."

The Buffs now move into a stretch where six of their next nine matches are at home. Colorado has been very good when playing in Boulder. The Buffs have won 63 games at home and boast a .708 win percentage since Coach Sanchez has been at the helm.

"Like I told the team, six of our last nine are at home," Sanchez added. "We have to take advantage of being at Prentup and altitude. I think it's going to be key for us. Back-to-back weekends of Friday Sunday matches have been tight games. It's a bit of a mental strain, obviously a physical strain so it'll be great to be back home."

UCLA (6-0-0, 3-0-0 Pac-12) will be the first top 5 team to visit Boulder since No. 2 Stanford in 2019. The Bruins hold a 2-10-0 advantage in the series, with CU's last win coming in 2016. UCLA has scored 2.50 goals per game this season, ranking second in the conference and 28th in the NCAA. The duo of Mia Fishel and Jacey Pederson was named the Pac-12's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, helping UCLA to wins over Oregon and Oregon State last weekend.

"UCLA is undefeated, ranked third and is kind of the frontrunner in the league right now," Sanchez previewed. "They are fantastic on the attack and great in the back. They are just a really good team. If we play like we played last weekend, I think we can get something out of this weekend."

USC (3-1-0, 2-1-0 Pac-12) opens the week in Utah on Friday, before making its way to Colorado. The Trojans swept the Oregon school last weekend in Los Angeles.

"This is Pac-12 soccer," Sanchez emphasized. "It's the same every year. It's not like it gets any easier down the road. Every single game [remaining] is a Pac-12 team. You look at some of the results around the league, every game, for the most part, has been a one-goal or overtime game."

This weekend offers up a chance for the Buffs to pick up win No. 100 for Coach Sanchez at CU. Colorado's win at Cal last Friday marked win No. 99 and the team came close to picking up the milestone win against Stanford.

Both matches are set to be played at Prentup Field. The impending snowstorm may force changes to Sunday's match against the Trojans.

Friday's match (noon) will be the inaugural live-event on the Pac-12's new broadband streaming channel, Pac-12 Insider. Pac-12 Insider is available through the Pac-12's partner platforms, Roku, Pluto TV, Samsung TV Plus, XUMO, Redbox and Vizio.

Sunday's match (1 p.m. MT) will be on the Pac-12 Networks.

And it's still 0-1 at the half.

Bruins with a large 8-1 shot advantage, but their only shot on goal was the goal.

The Buffs looked very solid in the 2nd half, outshooting the #3 Bruins 9-8 and having a few solid to great chances to score, but none find the back of the net and UCLA gets the win 0-1.

Team can hopefully take this as a confidence builder for the rest of the season.

Just flew home from SLC to Denver and USC was on the plane. Getting our bags at the carousel so dude yells out the the girls “I a 19xx graduate, go get them girls”

First just a creepy thing to shout at an airport.

Second, yeah like a soccer match is gonna happen this weekend. Can they play indoors?

Third, as a graduate how do you not say “Fight On”. Must be an MBA graduate or something.

Can they use the IPF? I don’t know whether it has markings or goals for soccer.

Yes. Sometimes they practice there as does lacrosse . Saw a spring game there a few years ago v KSU. The issue is that the pitch is too narrow for a soccer match because of the track. It really changes the nature of the game to play on a narrow field.

My guess is that the grounds crew would plow Kittredge Field which is artificial and the home of the lacrosse team. It would be easier to deal with than Prentup which is natural grass. It's not supposed to be too cold.

Supposedly a limited number of fans will be allowed in

Yep, the Kitt fields will work. Not ideal for soccer but that would work. I hated playing the artificial surface, even the good long stuff.

Like against the Bruins, the Buffs unfortunately give up an early goal (in the 11th minute), this time off a corner kick, and go down 0-1.

And the Buffs give up a 2nd almost immediately after as one of their players finds a striker right in front of goal and she chests it into the goal. 0-2 ~13 minutes in.

Buffs get one back in the 21st minute as Geraghty gets a nice pass that leaves her alone with just one defender who she shakes off, and the goalie makes the initial save but the Buff is able to get the rebound and knock it in.

It's now 1-2.

Buffs tie it at 2 in the 56th minute on a Hopcroft penalty kick!

(Freshman Willis has been huge on both goals, as her long service passes into the box led to both Geraghty being one on one with the goalie for goal 1, and led to the penalty call that led to goal #2.)

nice comeback win. James is going to be a problem for people. She has the ability to be a finisher. Seems to rush once in a while.

BOULDER – The skies opened up, the sun was shining and thanks to a tireless effort from Colorado's groundskeepers and operations crew to even get the game played, it was freshman Shyra James that sent the Buffaloes rushing onto the field, upsetting No. 14 Southern California 3-2 in double overtime.

"I want to shout out to all of our gameday ops people, especially Ryan (Newman), Jose (Lopez-Tanori) and Jonathan," head coach Danny Sanchez noted. "They were here at midnight on Sunday morning plowing this field and allowing us to play. This wouldn't happen if it wasn't for them and everyone behind the scenes making sacrifices to make this happen. I'm really, really pleased with all of them."

Colorado (5-3-1, 2-2-1 Pac-12) played from behind almost from the start. USC took a two-goal advantage in the first 14 minutes of the match, but CU never stopped working.

Junior Libby Geraghty got CU's first goal midway through the first half and senior Shanade Hopcroft tied the game on a penalty kick in the early portion of the second. Monday was CU's first win after trailing 2-0 since beating Mississippi on Sept. 12, 2008, also 3-2 in overtime.

"To go down 2-0 to the No. 14 team in the country, we could have hung our heads," Sanchez added. "We were actually playing well. It didn't feel like a 2-0 game. Libby [Geraghty] getting that goal about halfway through the first half really gave us confidence going forward. This was one of those games that probably could have gone either way. Shanade [Hopcroft] getting the equalizer, Dani Hansen coming up big in overtime and then obviously a really good goal from Shyra [James] at the end to win it. I'm proud of the team. This is Pac-12 soccer. We'll get ready for Utah on Saturday."

The win marked No. 100 for Sanchez in his career at Colorado. Sanchez is the second coach in program history to reach the milestone, joining long-time coach Bill Hempen (114).

USC (3-3-0, 2-1-0 Pac-12) got early goals from Tara McKeown and Penelope Hocking. Kaylie Collins made five saves for the Trojans.
...

Up Next: The Buffs will head to Utah for a non-conference matchup against the Utes on Saturday (11:30 a.m. MT).

Quotable: "[SID] Seth [Pringle] brought that up a couple of weeks ago and it's almost like a jinx because we got some early wins. I think it's just a reflection of the program. I think it's a reflection of where the program's going. I'm really pleased with the support we get top-to-bottom. We are a priority in this department. Everybody's a priority, but I think people see the potential of our program if we continue to build off of it. I think winning some games is just a byproduct of all that. Dave [Morgan], Jason [Green], Craig [Alston], Gabbie [Pelloni] and just everybody up and down that works with women's soccer, it's a great moment for them because most of them have been with me since I got here in 2012."

Notes: James' goal at 108:02 was the third latest game-winning goal in CU history (since overtime rules changed in 1998)…James is second on the team with her three goals and seven points…Willis' two assists adds to her team lead (6)…Her six assists are the most by a freshman since Fran Munnelly (6) in 2002…It also matches last year's high in assists (Taylor Kornieck, 6)…Hansen now has 49 saves this season…CU improves to 2-0-0 at Kittredge Field…Coach Sanchez is now 100-59-21 in his ninth season at CU.
