VOLLEYBALL (15-14 overall; 7-11 in the Pac 12) almost certainly end their season with a quick turnaround after Sunday's win as they 1st head to Berkeley to face the Cal Bears (16-13, 5-13) for the 1st time this season Wednesday afternoon, and then finish the season against the Utah Utes (10-18, 5-13) on Friday. Both matches are at wierd (weekday afternoon) times caused, I assume, by the Thanksgiving holiday.

Never having been an athlete myself, I IMAGINE the team will be HIGHLY motivated to play their best and end the season STRONG with the teammates with whom they've put in SO MUCH hard work on the court and in the weightroom (and beyond) through the year(s). And, they'd better bring the intensity, as I'd anticipate the Bears to be feeling good about themselves after going down to L.A. and upsetting the Bruins yesterday, while the Utes will I'm sure be very motivated after celebrating their seniors on Friday.

In addition, the conference standings are still in flux - the Buffs are currently in solo 7th place, one game behind the UCLA Bruins (who have a road game at pesky OSU and then have to go back home before heading down the road to finish their regular season at ranked USC). And, behind CU, there are 2 teams 1 game back and 2 2 games back.

In this week's official RPI report (https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/volleyball-women/d1/ncaa-womens-volleyball-rpi),,the Buffs are at #63, while Cal is #71 and Utah #123.

Also, as I mentioned in other recent threads, in the Volleytalk forum I read that a rating/ ranking I hadn't heard of, KPI (available via query at https://faktorsports.com/), is now listed as a primary criteria this season for the NCAA tournament volleyball selection committee. Right now the Buffs are #56 in KPI, while the Bears are #70 and Utes #124.

Both matches are scheduled to be shown on one or the other Pac 12 Network channel. (More info and links provided near the end of this post.)

Go Buffs!!!

(Preview(s) not available as I type this.)

As of now, the Wednesday match is not yet showing on my Pac-12 schedules. Hopefully that gets correct. The Friday match is.

As long as it doesn't conflict with basketball, I plan to watch both matches.

Go Buffs!

Buffs Hit the Road to Close Out Regular Season

BOULDER – The Colorado Women's Volleyball team (15-14, 7-11) will play out their two final matches of the regular season as they take on California (16-13, 5-13) and Utah (10-18, 5-13). The Buffs will play the Bears Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. MT and the Utes on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. MT.

The Buffs just closed out their final home match, ending on a high-note by sweeping Washington in three sets on Senior Day. They lost the first match of the weekend to No.11 Washington in three sets. It marks back-to-back years they have swept the Huskies in at least one match of the season series.

Senior Lexi Hadrych led the way in kills with 11, the only Buff to log double-digit kills in the three-set victory. She ended with a .526 hitting percentage along with six digs in her last match at the CU Events Center.

Skyy Howard and Lily Dwinell each had eight kills and fantastic hitting percentages. Howard had an even .500 hitting percentage while Dwinell ended with a .467 hitting percentage.

Colorado is still seventh in the Pac-12 standings after taking down Washington to go up one game on them. The Buffs could improve by one spot this weekend, as they trail UCLA by one game in the standings.

OPPONENT OVERVIEW
California

The Cal Bears are fresh off a win against the Bruins on the road, which snapped a previous five-game losing streak. It marks just their fifth conference win all season.

Colorado has dominated the series, winning nine of the last ten matches against Cal, with their last loss coming in the 2019 season. The Buffs are 6-4 when traveling to Berkeley and will look to improve that record come Wednesday.

Utah
The Utes have lost their last four matches, with their last win coming against Oregon State a few weeks ago in five sets on the road.

Colorado has struggled in years past when in Salt Lake City, winning just three of the fourteen total match-ups played there. CU did take down the Utes in four sets earlier in the season at home and have won the last three matches in the series. They will look to continue their winning streak over Utah.

Match has just begun. (Buffs up 4-2 early in the 1st.)

Long way to go, but very good start as the Buffs win the 1st 25-10, with many of their servers giving Cal big problems, while Buff serve receive (which has improved a LOT as the season has gone on) did a good job with the Bears' serves.

Well, everything I said above that was going good for the Buffs and bad for the Bears in the 1st set is reversed in the 2nd, and Cal ties the match 1-1 by a 16-25 score. (The Buffs did play better late after going down 9-20; hopefully they carry at least THAT (and hopefully higher) level of play to the 3rd.)

The Buffs get up pretty big in the 3rd set (13-5), Cal rallies to get it down to 3 a time or 2, but then the Buffs finish STRONG and go up 2-1 by a 25-19 score!

Buffs Defeat Golden Bears In Four

BERKELEY, Calif. - The Colorado women's volleyball team (16-14, 8-11) defeated the University of California Berkeley (16-14, 5-14) in four sets (25-10, 16-25, 25-19, 25-23) here Wednesday.

Maya Tabron led Colorado to their win with 17 kills in 32 attempts to hit .375. Skyy Howard was the only other Buff to hit double-digit kills with 10 in 18 attempts, hitting .500. Lexi Hadrych led CU in blocks with four while also earning nine kills, and Taylor Simpson recorded 40 assists.

As a team, the Buffs earned 52 kills with a .235 hitting percentage, while California hit a close .212, recording 41 kills.

"Great road win today, even though we weren't always at our best," said head coach Jesse Mahoney. "We had some great runs from the service line and made defensive plays at crunch time when it mattered. Looking forward to turkey tomorrow and a trip to Utah."

Colorado will look for another win on the road against Utah on Friday at 3:00 p.m. MT.

So happy they pulled off this W. Injuries made this a tougher season than anticipated but the kids never quit and never gave up. They stayed positive.
Couldn't watch the match but will be watching tomorrow.

Go Buffs!

Match time!

(From live stats, looks like largely the normal starting lineup, but with Kuehl in as one of the middles.)

The Buffs fall way behind in set 2, and although they hopefully got a little momentum from playing the Utes more even late, it's tied 1-1 after a 16-25 2nd.

Ugh - Buffs can't hold a 14-7 lead and, although they do have 1 match point opportunity, Utah pushes it to a set 5 after a 26-28 4th.

Well - kind of symbolic of what has been a so close but JUST not enough season - Utah wins the match in 5 after a 11-15 set.

Thanks so much to the seniors for so much entertainment over the years, and best wishes to them (and of course the WHOLE team) going forward.

And, with the strongest freshman class I can remember getting a lot of playing time this season, and some other qualify players coming back, the future looks bright.

Today was too typical.

Frustrating season.

But I also think that there's a lot to build on and that this squad could be favored to win the Big 12 next year.

Tough to watch the way they let Utah back in to the match in the 4th set and then were never in the 5th set.
