VOLLEYBALL (13-10 overall; 5-7 in the Pac 12) heads off to the Pacific Northwest for a weekend of matches. 1st off is a Friday evening tilt with the surging OSU Beavers (9-13, 4-8), and then heads a little down the road to face the #7 Oregon Ducks (19-4, 9-3) Sunday afternoon.

In this week's official RPI report (https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/volleyball-women/d1/ncaa-womens-volleyball-rpi),,the Buffs are at #54, while OSU is #121 and Oregon #7.

Also, as I mentioned in other recent threads, in the Volleytalk forum I read that a rating/ ranking I hadn't heard of, KPI (available via query at https://faktorsports.com/), is now listed as a primary criteria this season for the NCAA tournament volleyball selection committee. Right now the Buffs are #49 in KPI, while the Beavers are #123 and Ducks #7.

Friday's match against WSU is currently not showing any video available, while Sunday's is slotted to be on the Pac 12 Network. (More info and links provided near the end of this post.)

Go Buffs!!!

Colorado Travels to Take on Oregon, Oregon State

BOULDER – The Colorado Women's Volleyball team (13-10, 5-7) will head up to the Pacific Northwest again, this time to take on State (9-13, 4-8) and No. 7 Oregon (19-4, 9-3). Friday's match in Corvallis will be at 8 p.m. MT, followed up with Sunday's match in Eugene at 1 p.m. MT.

Colorado enters the week after splitting matches against USC and UCLA at home. They took down the Trojans in five sets Friday night, while the Bruins came away with the sweep Sunday afternoon.

Friday nights' match was spearheaded by a trio of first years combining for 30 of the teams 57 kills. Lily Dwinell had a career-high 15 kills, Ana Burilović earned 10 and Cayla Payne tacked on five kills of her own.

With the absence of CU's top attacker Lexi Hadrych, Maya Tabron led with 18 kills and 11 digs to propel the Buffs over the Trojans.

Tabron was the only Buff to log double-digit kills against UCLA, with 13 kills for a .458 hit percentage and 11 digs.

Colorado currently sits at seventh in the Pac-12 standings, just behind both schools in Los Angeles. The Buffaloes have six games remaining on the road and two more at home in the CU Events Center.

OPPONENT OVERVIEW

Oregon State

The Beavers are coming off arguably their best weekend of the season, taking down both Washington and then-No.6 Washington State on the road, doubling their conference wins in a single weekend.

Colorado narrowly defeated Oregon State earlier in the month at home in five sets, and will now look to sweep the season series on Friday.

Oregon
Just like their in-state rival, the Ducks handled both the Huskies and Cougars on the road, losing just one set on the weekend. They now sit at third place in the conference, only trailing Arizona State and Stanford.

Oregon swept the Buffs earlier in the month on the road and will look to continue their win streak over Colorado to eight matches. CU hasn't beaten the Ducks since 2019, including four straight losses in Eugene.

A 5 point Beaver point run well into a tight (after an 18-18 score) set proves too much for CU to overcome and OSU goes up 1-2 after a 21-25 3rd set.

With offensive leader Hadrych out, any win is a big one as they get their freshmen more used to bigger roles, and the Buffs get the 5th set 15-8 9 and win 3-2 over an OSU team that beat highly ranked WSU last weekend.

Way to go Buffs!

Thank you for all of the updates, AztecBuff. I couldn't stream the match, and don't use twitter/x so you were my only link to the game. You rock! Great road win for CU. Hoping for a huge upset in Eugene; the Ducks swept the Utes tonight. Go BUFFS!!

That match kept me up way too late but it was worth it! My cats do not agree that it was worth it.

Aztec does better with updates than CU does on Twitter or Instagram.

On to Sunday when we get on the national Pac-12 channel.

Buffs Defeat Beavers In Five Sets

Corvallis, Ore. - The Colorado women's volleyball team (14-10, 6-7) defeated the Oregon State Beavers (9-14, 4-8) in five sets (17-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-18, 15-9) Friday night.

The Buffs' offense played a huge role in tonight's win, with Maya Tabron, Skyy Howard, and Ana Burilović leading the way for Colorado as all three of them earned double-digits in kills.

Junior setter Taylor Simpson also played an important role in tonight's win, recording 44 assists.

Tabron was the top contender for the Buffs, producing a season high of 18 kills in 44 attempts to hit .318, as well as earning 12 digs and four blocks. Howard posted 12 kills in 21 attempts to hit .476 while also recording an incredible 12 blocks. As a team, CU recorded 55 kills while achieving a .270 hitting percentage.

"Great to get a road win in the Pac-12 against a team that has been peaking recently," said head coach Jesse Mahoney. "Our ball handling and block came alive in set 4, and we were dialed in for set 5. We had a lot of great performances but this might have been Skyy's best as a Buff!"

The Buffs will look for another win on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. MT against the No.7 Oregon Ducks.

Gonna need to go on a run these final 6 games, but this team has recovered well from that stretch of losing like 6 of 7 and has a path to the NCAAs.

Match day!

Another highlights video from Friday -

As a Buff fan all I can say is thanks to the gods that volleyball uses sets to score rather than just points, as the Hadrych-less*** Buffs have I'd guess their worst set score of the season as they lose the 1st 7-25.

(***Although I wouldn't say based on the wording she's 100% out next weekend, but re Lexi the announcer unfortunately said (I assume based on a talk with Coach Mahoney) something like that Ms. Hadrych was originally hoped to be out (only) 2-3 weeks, but her injury (believe a sprained ankle) has not been responding as well as they (I assume Lexi and the team) had hoped.)

THAT'S more like it.

The Buffs had it tied at 16, I thought were in big trouble after then going down 17-21, but then ride a Bolles*** service run (she's been the main server giving the Ducks problems so far) to tie it up, and eventually survive a set point and come back to tie it up 1-1 after a 26-24 2nd set.
(With this Buff team having maybe the best depth at every position I can remember, makes sense that after the TOUGH 1st set, Coach Mahoney put in 3 new players for the 2nd set, with Jordan coming in to join Tabron as the 2nd outside hitter, Kuehl coming in to join Howard as the 2nd middle blocker, and (lightly used so far this season) RS sophomore Stepaniuk coming in to play at the libero position.)

(***Per a graphic presented during the telecast, frosh Ms. Bolles is now the leader in the Pac 12 in aces per set, and with 3 already in this match assume she's already probably going to still be leading after this match.)

The 2nd set is very close almost the whole way, but the Ducks, aided by some great defensive plays, pull away late to go up 1-2 after a 20-25 3rd set.
(Hated that the Ducks won a challenge point that I believe would have given the Buffs, if I remember correctly, an 18-17 lead after a great Jordan back row hit was initially called a point because it hit the floor. Although replay showed that WAS technically correct, the pass of the person who did keep it off the floor was NOT good so it would have been a Buff point anyways IF the referee(s) hadn't prematurely blown their whistle as the Ducks would not have been able to get the ball over the net.)

Unfortunately CU largely reverted to their 1st set level of play, with WAY too many errors, especially on serve receive and hitting, that leads to a #7 Duck 1-3 win after a 9-25 4th set.

Oh well, the team was a heavy underdog to a VERY GOOD Duck team even IF Hadrych had been playing, and hope they take from this that (1) they showed in the 2nd and much of the 3rd set they can play with anyone and (2) they HAVE to be more consistent than they were today if they want to contend the rest of the way (Although to be fair the Ducks were probably the toughest team left on their schedule with now 6 matches remaining).

And, I'm continuing to see VERY positive things at times showing the talent of all the freshmen playing (and a LOT of them are getting good playing time) that should be a great sign (if they continue to work to improve they're skill and consistency) for the team in future years.

It's very difficult without Haldrych. Very difficult as we have seen. The Buffs were very competitive for two of the four sets. I know that isn't enough to win, but it also gives mr hope for the remaining matches.

Freshmen are seeing lots of playing time and are improving each week.

For those that watched, did you hear the announcer talking about our current Taylor Simpson and our All American Taylor Simpson?

I hope this Taylor Simpson has as much success as the All American.

that is what I took out of the match. Without Lexi it is tough and Oregon is very good. I think the future can be bright with what I seen from the freshmen. Need to get a star type player to pull out those type of wins.
