Thoughts on Tonight's Game vs Fresno and Overall...

1. Disappointed in the crowd yet again tonight... had to be less than 4K out there today. Come on guys, go support the Buffs!

2. Spencer Dinwiddie is an absolute stud. We were not very aggressive tonight and Spencer took over when we needed someone to, that's BIG from a freshman. He's very aggressive finishing at the rim and has a very pure long distance jumper... he's a very efficient scorer for us. Gotta watch the dumb freshman mistakes and fouls, but of course, he is a freshman so they will happen.

3. Nate Tomlinson, if you can't respect what he brings to this team after tonight, you'll just never get it, bottom line. He was the only reason we did ANYTHING in the 2nd half until the last 5 minutes when Spencer showed up. He is apparently the only person on the team who is capable of running the offense against a zone, and he was routinely setting up players for easy buckets tonight. Austin Dufault literally would average 2PPG without Nate on the floor. Efficient offensively, and 6 assists and 6 rebounds tonight, he was HUGE.

4. Austin Dufault had a solid game, as I said, benefited from some easy looks because of Nate's vision. He's still a liability defensively and he refuses to box out. Needs to utilize the pump more offensively because he's a below average leaper.

5. Damiene Cain is ready to play, but it appears he's just out of game shape as of now. He's extremely aggressive on the boards and will be a double digit rebounder for us long term. He is only an average leaper so he'll need to rely on his width to create scoring opportunities for himself. He looked comfortable guarding in the post and quick enough to guard the perimeter at his position, so that was very good to see.

6. The Shane Harris Tunks experiment needs to be over...please keep him off the floor, PLEASE.

7. Askia Booker had a very rough night, which to be honest, he was due for. He's very aggressive offensively but he also takes terrible shots routinely. That hasn't stopped him from scoring in the past, but it bit him tonight. We took 3 bad shots on the night, he took 2 of them (his only two attempts), Spencer the other one. Freshman will do that, but Booker needs to realize when to attack and when to find someone a shot. He also had some turnover trouble tonight and he's gotta find a way to slow down and play within the system.

8. Shannon Sharpe needs more minutes in games like tonight. We don't have a stopper on defense and he's our best shot, we've gotta find a way to slow down teams with a single guard who can score, it's bit us in the ass repeatedly. On the same topic, I don't understand why we continue to help off kids like tonight... their leading scorer was destroying us all night and we kept dropping off him, SOOOOOO frustrating.

9. Carlon Brown is such a disappointment thus far in the season. He's the ONLY kid on the team who can consistently create for himself off the dribble and get a solid shot. There is NO excuse for him to be so complacent, and he's not even playing aggressively defensively to make up for it. Its so inexcusable for our go to scorer to shoot the ball twice... literally inexcusable.

10. Andre Roberson played extremely well tonight, stayed available in the offense and took advantage of his off the ball advantages. He needs to continue to do that, because despite him being limited offensively, he can't afford to disappear on offense, we need his production. Of course, on the boards, he's as solid as can be...

11. This is the 2nd game in a row I came away extremely disappointed with Tad Boyle's decision making. His rotations are very questionable at times and he continues to leave players in for too long, namely Harris Tunks. He's getting stubborn, trying to allow the team to figure it out by themselves, we aren't good enough to do that, he's gotta tone that down. This type of game were we blew such a huge lead and we had 3 TOs remaining at the end of the game, that's not acceptable, at all. He refuses to make defensive adjustments to focus attention on a team's scorers, we can't allow one person to keep opponents in a game.

12. Free throws! FINALLY!!!!!!!! Nice to point to this as a reason we WON a game. Time and time again FTs are the difference between a win and a lose, they are free, it's not acceptable for them to be the reason you lose. We need to continue this going forward.

13. This team wins ugly... better than losing ugly, but we've got a long ways to go. We are fortunate to be playing in the Pac 12 this year rather than the Big XII, I'll say that much. It's going to be a roller coaster ride and I continue to try to tone down my emotions as I didn't expect much from this team this year. A win is a win afterall, right?

Oh, and GO BUFFS!

Report is that Carlon Brown was fighting the flu. No clue why he still got so many minutes, but maybe a reason for his slowness tonight.

I would agree with a few observations.
The student section is going to be sparse all week. Finals start Saturday morning at 7:30. It is going to be hard for kids to get there with projects and studying.

Ski definitely struggled. He failed badly to rotate once and Nate stared him down for quite some time.

I thought Simba played his best game tonight. He will continue to loose minutes with Cain though. DID anyone see that box out that Cain had at the free throw line. It was beautiful. So was the backdown that he got called for an offensive foul on. If we keep getting him more minutes we might be able to minimize freshmen pains.

Any idea what was going on with the corner triangle offense we played with Austin today? Strangest set I have seen. It involved Austin in the corner, Nate rotating and another player running baseline. It seemed like any decent team would have trapped Austin and just forced a turnover.

Great post and thanx for the analysis. For us distance-challenged fans, it means a lot.

A couple of things for you to ponder, both dealing with the amount of time some players are on the court, since you've seen the team live:

-- Is it possible Boyle is leaving players on the court longer, in combination with other players, just to get a better idea of what/how he'll employ rotations when conference play begins?

-- Are there any players, in your opinion, that the coach is leaving on-court longer just to get them into "game shape"?

I would imagine that Tad is trying to find successful combinations, but he needs to be smarter about pulling the plug. It was a main factor in our loss to CSU... yes, we need these kids down the stretch, but we also need to win games as a #1 priority. We play an easy schedule over the next 3 weeks, find out about those combinations then, not in clutch 2nd half situations.

Don't see players getting minutes to get them into game shape... SHT is there, he just isn't any good. Cain needs MORE minutes if anything, he's already noticeably more effective than SHT and even Austin if we are talking strictly defense.

To re-post what I said on Rivals:

Good analysis, TZ. Sorry I missed you before the game (and didn't take my cell out of my pocket).

I saw three things tonight that could be game changers for us:

1. Adams is becoming a key player. Love his defense and his aggressiveness on offense.

2. Cain is a game changer for us on the inside. Offense, defense and rebounding.

3. Dre found his confidence on the offensive end.

Put that together with Mayor Dinwiddie becoming a consistent scorer on his way to being a go to guy and we have the makings of a quality team this season.

Non-conference games are experiments...playing guys too long or not enough in those games isn't as bad as making those mistakes in the conference games

Nate

Couldnt have said it better myself. I feel like im the only one who recognizes how important Nate is to this team. Without him we ahve such a hard time running an offense and are limited to pushing the ball and running a fast breaking style. IMO he played he played his best game tonight that ive seen him play in the last couple years. (Did not see the air force game)

Nate is our pg for this year, I think Ski will be it eventually. He can get into the lane and either score or kick it. Dinwiddie isnt through growing, I wouldnt be surprised if he grew another 2 inches or so. I think he will be a versatile guard that can play point when need be, natural 2 or 3 imho.

I saw that box out Cain had, it was a fundamentally sound physical play by a CU big man and it was beautiful. Cain In his 6 minutes did everything i have been wanting simba to do, Cain will get some major PT as this year goes on, i really like dufault and what he bring to this team, but cain brings an actual post presence.

As to that triangle thing with dufault, i have no idea what CU was doing on offense all night, in the 2nd half against that 2-3 zone they looked lost. 4 guys standing around the perimeter with dufault underneath kind of posting up,no penetration and slow ball movment equals a recipe for disaster. The zone offense needs work.

Other quick thoughts:
The mayor looks better every game
Adams looks more comfortable (he also looks more like a linebacker than a bball player)
Touched on above, but cain is a beast
Nice offensive night for dre, his foul troubles still worry me
Nate did everything you want a senior pg to do tonight, excellent game
CU is going to see a lot of zone the rest of the year after tonights performance
Ft shooting=amazing
Is it to early to offer boyles' kid a scholership? (the one who sweeps the floor during breaks and dances on the north end). He has to have grown 6 inches since last yr.

I Caint wait to see Damiene get good minutes in the post. I wanna se his array of post moves.

I liked what I saw from Cain he is aggressive on both ends of the floor. My biggest problem with Simba is that he is so timid on the offense end. His first move with the ball is to freeze and stand there and then decide what to do. I am not ready to call Cain a gamer but he gives us some attitude that we have been missing in the post.
