How many recruits from this cycle will start or play next year?

We have talked a lot about gaping needs we have and the hope we have for this class. I haven't seen a thread talk about how many players might start or at least get meaningful playing time as a pure Frosh.

Without naming names because we haven't closed out this class yet and competition in Spring and Fall wills say WHO starts but my guess for number of players getting starts during the year (most probably won't start from beginning to end but may win the job due to injury or just improved play by middle of season):
1 Fullback
1 Receiver
1-2 Tight Ends
2-3 DE/DL
2-3 DBs
1 LB

This year we had 15 of our recruits see the field. I would bet that next year it will be at least 20. I would bet that a good number of them get in on special teams and we may even use a few as returners.

Thoughts?

If Rippy is ready to go, it's going to be extremely difficult for a LB to start. He'd have to move out Rippy, Major or Webb. If Rippy's not ready, you still have Daigh and Greer plus some guys who were depth players in 2011. It would take a special player to earn a starting spot.

I'd add RB to your list, too.

Also, even for the spots where I don't think it would be likely to start I do think that there's a great opportunity to be part of a rotation that gets a lot of snaps for each guy. We'll rotate on the DL and Cabral always likes a deep rotation at LB. Brown also mixes up coverages a lot, so there's opportunity to get snaps in the secondary even if a guy's not a starter. We'll rotate TEs, WRs and RBs a lot, too.

I think Rippy has the talent to play as a freshman, but it sounds like he lacks the bulk. He's listed at 210, but that might be a little generous.

no LB's. 4 DL, 2 DBs, 2 WR, 2 TE, 1 FB, 2 RB. Plus multiple others in special teams.

Edit: and of course, 1 QB if wood is part of it.

I think Rippy might see some playing time at LB if he comes here (Please!!!). RB, WR, TE, DL and DB will see Freshmen with significant playing time, IMO.

Yah, I forgot RBs. We already have 3 committed and are still in the running for Brown. Given the loss of major production from Rodney and relatively inexperienced other young RBs on the depth chart, you guys are right that we will see at least one if not 2 or even 3 of these running backs get on the field this year.

More than probably should imo
Hard to argue with you. In 2 years time I bet the % of recruits that see the field in the first year is probably like 10%. But we are depleted due to a huge graduating senior class and a lot of current players not really skilled enough to play and dominate in the Pac 12. Given that most people do agree that we will have at least 10 or more seeing the field a lot this year, it does make you wonder if our goal of a bowl game is in reach. Hopefully these guys can get up to speed QUICK! Too bad more of them are not EEs!

Typical boydbuff post is 7-9 lines of block text. You are baby Mtn.

QB - Connor Wood
RB - Abron and Payne
WR - Thomas and Thomas
TE - Depends if we get JCF or McNamara
OL - Kelley
DL - Solis, Hennington and Tupuo
LB - Not sure
CB - Not Sure
S - Not sure

I wasn't considering Connor Wood in this list because he is technically not a recruit for the 2012 class but I absolutely believe he is starting next year.

I know, but I think we may just as well count him towards the 2012 class as 2012 will be the first season where´s eligible to see the field.

Hopefully not many. We need to get back to having mostly sr's and jr's in the starting line-up.

Hate to tell you this but we're gonna be really young next year.
I agree. If 15 of our pure Frosh played this year, we graduated almost 30 seniors, and we are going after a class of nearly 30 that are filling holes throughout our lineup, I bet we are the youngest team in the Pac 12 next year.

"that is no excuse for losing any games. i am tired of excuses!!! i want wins!!!" this will come from.... you can guess the list.

We will have some growing pains especially early in the year but I am with you. And lucky for us, Embree is the coach now and he is not one for excuses.

BTW, I have never felt more in the mood for xmas :wow:

Wait til year 2019, we won't be young anymore and we'll challenge for a pac 12 title!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, the excuses heard during the last 5 years won't cut it with this staff. They have to WIN next year or they won't get the talent that people say they need to get to the top of the pac 12.

So we can't win, got it. So what year this go round should we expect a winning season 2014? 2015?
**** that. Players, coaches and many ABers on record as saying reasonable goal this year is to get to a bowl. That means at least 6 wins-double this year. Easier schedule, etc.-it's doable. But give Wood and all our young players and new recruits one more year in the system and I think we should shoot for 8-4 in 2013. 10-2 2014 and in the Pac 12 championship and Rose Bowl 2015. Gotta set BHAGs and no excuses.

You didn't, it's just a flashback of hearing the term "young again" that sends a grenade up my spine.
Well why don't you save your energy to say that to someone who says we can't win rather than someone who is optimistic and believes we'll be bowling next year, mmkay?
