This one is hard to write. Honestly, I'd love to give you an excuse on how work was crazy or how I was out of town this weekend, or many other things to tell you why This Week in BasketBuffs is a day late, but I just can't. Both of those excuses are true, but it still didn't stop me from trying this yesterday. However, as I sat down to write my recap, I just couldn't get over the frustration of the Wyoming game.

They kicked our ass.

Period. There's really no other way to look at it. The Fresno game wasn't pretty, but it showed that we could rebound from a heartbreaking loss. The game had it's problems (how we went from a 20 point lead to only having a 3 point lead is disturbing), but overall it was full of positives -- the freshmen all stepping up, the team shooting 84% from the FT line and Dre bringing his game up. We were all happy. Then Wyoming came in and kicked our ass. And I can't stress that enough, it was an ass kicking. And that ass kicking puts us at 5-4, meaning the best we can do in non-conference is 8-4, which means we need to go .500 in PAC-12 play to have a realistic shot at the NIT. Is it possible? Yes, but it's not likely. The one good thing we have going for us can actually be summed up in a post-game conversation I had with Nik:

Goose: "You seriously think we can go on a mini-run? We couldn't even win the Mountain West right now."
Nik: "Is there any team in the PAC-12 that could win the Mountain West right now?"

The question is how do we get there? Personally, I'm on board with Nik's plan. I'd give the majority of the playing time to Spencer (frosh), Ski (frosh), Adams (soph), Dre (soph) and Cain (frosh). I'd play Nate, Austin and Carlon off of the bench. I'd use SHT and Chen in spot minutes. But it's time for the younger players to take over. I will be thankful to the seniors for giving their all to CU and will cheer them loudly on senior day and hope for nothing but the best for them in the rest of their careers after they leave Boulder, but it's becoming painfully obvious that they don't have the senior leadership necessary to take this team. It was pretty obvious that Spencer has the biggest balls on this team as he single handedly tried to drag the Buffs back in to the game kicking and screaming against Wyoming. He's found his groove, it's time for him to take over. I may be in the minority on this, but he's our best player right now if you ask me.

I know some of you might be surprised to see me throwing all of my chips in on Cain already, but I haven't seen anything to make me think he's not going to be a badass. He's not in game shape yet, but he's getting there. Honestly, there were two moments that won me over last week.

1.) The first time he entered the game, he got into a deep defensive stance -- something I haven't seen anyone else on this team do at all.
2.) Against Wyoming, he was guarding Washington down low and he got low, used correct positioning and when it was said and done he moved Washington all the way from the low post to almost the three point line. Washington isn't some tiny guy either as he's 6'7", 235 lbs.. This was impressive defense.

Now Cain's not there yet. As I mentioned he's not yet in shape, and he needs to work on his hands still, but he's going to be a good player for us.

So the question is, do we risk missing the postseason completely by going with the youth movement or do we just stay the course and assume that this is just a temporary glitch and that the team will find it's groove?

THIS WEEK

The men's team is off this week for some much needed practice on beating the zone defense and post entry passes. However the women's team hosts Weber State at home on Saturday at 4 pm. The game is also available on BuffsTV, but let's get the Foam Dome rocking.

Youth movement.

Not because I'm ready to play for next year. I think it's the best way to play for this year. Keep increasing the minutes to push them and see what they can handle. If the young talent develops over the course of the season, we become a good team by the last half of the conference schedule and very dangerous for the Pac-12 tourney.

You keep saying what I just said, but in more words.

Strange on two levels.

First, because I rarely read your posts.

Second, because it disturbs the hell out of me that I'm wordier than a lawyer.

Don't worry, I used acronyms in my post, you were at a disadvantage.

Get the youngens on the court! We knew this year was rebuilding and as the experience comes, these guys are going to be pretty damn good come Pac 12 tourney time. Also, the Pac is pretty weak so it will not be as painful as we might think

Just play the best players with the best lineups. And that seems to be what the young guys are right now.

On the women's side, the Buffs managed to pick up a win on the strong play of Chucky Jeffrey.

CU beat Denver by 35 points 71-36

The Buffs return to the CEC on Saturday, December 17 to host Weber State. Back in the day when the Lady Buffs were in the Intermountain West league, Weber State was a big rivalry game. That is no longer true. Weber State is currently 2-8. On their trip to the Rockies, they will play Wyoming before playing CU.

The Buffs will then head to San Antonia for the USTA Holiday Classic on December 20 and 21 before taking a break for Christmas.

I would say the Weber State game is one the Buffs should win!

This

the "youth movent" is the best way to go this season not just to get them experince but b/c i thnk they are better than the sr's.

And I totally agree with goose about playing ski, dre, booker, cain and adams the majority of the time. I thnk adams has struggled to date, but he has only playd a couple games, i want to see more. My chips are completely in on cain as well. Watching his brief playing time you can just tell he has the fumdametals and skill, he just needs to get in game shape.

"Jeremy Adams doesn't seem to be getting it done

Dinwiddie and Dre seem to finding their groove

Dufualt is having a nice season" per jgisland's win/loss thread

Ok, after reading and throwing my 2 cents here and there, I gotta say this and don't you guys take it the wrong way, but this is one group of psychotic buff fans!!!! There are endless points that all of you guys have made that ring true and endless points that are less than fact...but this current idea of the youth movement is totally nuts.... granted dre and dinwiddie are locks...ski should either be the 6th man ala knutson, or possibly start....cain is 2-4 weeks away from game shape major minutes....adams is still working on his game(and still shooting 20%)... but to go completely for this youth movement would jeopardize the chemistry of the team and quite honestly, throw the current season away. All the top programs have a "youth movement" in progress, but to go w/ what's suggested....these guys are NOT the fab five as much as we wish they were....these next couple of weeks should be interesting... Tad has a 9-10 man rotation in mind and it is a long season....the numbers on dufault are promising, brown and nate are having the typical ups and downs... but to throw these guys out... that's just nuts....we have a serious opportunity to get to one of the 3 tourneys as the p12 is down this year....lets not panic and shoot the piano player.... yet

I don't think anybody is saying (at least I am not) that Nate, Dufault and Brown shouldn't play, I all think they should and continue to start as well. Dufault is having a nice year as is Brown at times, and no matter your stance on Nate (everybody has one) it is hard to argue he has had some nice games. I just want these young guys get some decent minutes together and see how they fare. Ski is the perfect 6th man, I don't want him to start right now, the energy and skill he brings off the bench teams would die for that.

I totally agree :smile2:

And shang my boy... You haven't been here long, have you?

Have you even been here during the week after a bad football loss? HOw about 5 in a row? You aint seen nothing yet.

That said, I respectfully disagree with you. I'm sure starting/playing the frosh more could damage the chemistry of the team, but I don't think you can state it as fact, and as far as I am concerned, it could change the chemistry for the better.

From what I've seen, the frosh are not just better players, they are also better leaders. You had ****ing true frosh Ski getting up in Tomlinson's face after his technical in the Wyoming game. Dinwiddie and Cain (along with Adam's D, who aint a frosh but is a new guy) basically willed the team back into the game before nobody else stepped up.

Besides, this is almost a moot point. Aside from Cain, the frosh can't really get much more minutes. Dinwiddie spends more minutes as a PG than Tommy tom does, and Ski is playing 20+ minutes per game. The king is already dead. And thank ****ing goodness.

BTW, I just want to point out that right now according to the KenPom simulations, the most likely scenarios for CU the rest of this season is to win 14 games, going 7-11 in PAC-12 play (which I think is a typo because the graph at the top has us most likely to go 6-12 and we're HEAVY favorites for the last 3 non-conf games).

Wow, it is gonna be close for us to make the NIT.

Does KenPom include our DII win? Because 7-11 should get us to 15 unless he has us losing one of these last 3 non-conference games.
