Running out of spots in this class? How to proceed?

Does the staff go to guys like Rippy & Wright and tell them that we're almost out of room in this class, or do they hold a few spots open for them just in case?

We have 6-8 spots left depending on how things play out, keep in mind our admissions may decide to whack 2 or 3 of these guys.

Most likely the staff has a pretty good idea where we stand with Rippy, Yuri, Crawley, McNamara and Brown. Those are the guys who we hold spots for and figure out how to get them into the class. I don't know how many of these we get or even have a real shot at but if they want to be Buffs we take them, now or later.

The time pressure gets put on everyone else.

5-7 spots left imo

1 for FB-Only if Powell commits
2 CBs
2 OL
1 LB

Then take best player available

Nothing but top talent and the fb powell from here on out. Crunch time, let's get some 4 stars. No room for projects...we have enough.

I understand if they are risks for the spring semester, but hasn't admissions given a conditional "thumbs up" on these guys already? Why would you accept an LOI if you can't get them in? I think most coaches get the school to at least screen their current records to avoid wasting effort on those we can't accept. Is Embo not doing that?

True, but there are always some borderline guys that have to finish strong on their last semester to get in.

Powell
Rippy
Crawley
Wright
Cyburt, Brostek
Davidson
Wr (some wr)

Arent we looking at a few dt's as well? I know that list is umm aiming high but maybe we'll get some luck our way for once.

It's entirely possible that we oversign, too. It's not like that has never happened. In fact, I encourage the practice. If we're going up against other schools that do it, we should be too. I know we have 5-6 guys that we really want in this class, but haven't committed. Looking at the class as it stands, we don't have room for 5-6 guys. We have room for 3 guys.

We need to consider the possibility that we may have 2 guys who take a medical gray shirt year.

There's that, and the fact that you always lose 3-4 guys a year just from attrition. Honestly, i don't have a problem with signing 28 or so guys.

We also have three potential EE's that we could count against last years class.

DB and OL would be the priorities. Adding powell and javon williams would be great but they need crawley and wright bad.

As for OL, who's left? Cyburt, moore?

If it's two-stars from here on out, guys who we really aren't sure about speed, etc, I say hold those spots for next year's class.

The d-line alone in this class is going to improve our pass protection. I want some elite cbs for sure, but nothing less, we already have like nine of those in the secondary.

You had me everywhere except where the D line recruits will improve our pass protection.

I think the staff has some confidence in the guys already on the roster, and a large part of their strategy is to bolster them via the D-line. I know, strange.

What about the Colorado kid who de-committeed from PSU?

I'd love to have O'Connor but don't get any indication that he is coming here. I think that we have a chance but it seems like he has always been set on going out of state.

Ideally, you'd bring in about 22 guys a year (1 for each position) and build a 5 year pipeline. We obviously are nowhere close to that.

We will need big-time PT from incoming freshman at DE, DT, TE, WR, FB, RB and CB. That's flat out ridiculous.

I'm getting the idea that philosophy of the staff is sort of like this:

We need 2 WR's to come in and play, maybe even 3. We take 4, let them compete and see who can help us right away. Redshirt two. We can't fall short here, as we need production right away. We can't wait and we have no margin of error. We essentially must take two years' worth this year as a stop gap. Let's face it, perhaps a third of recruits never pan out. If we need 3 players, we can't take 3. We better take 4-5.

Other positions like O-Line are always a need. Can they get away with lesser numbers this year? Probably. They may even suspect a few of these 8 DL guys may end up at OL (ala Nembot). They go hard next year at OL.

With that thinking, the lack of LB and OL recruiting starts to make sense.

I think Buffaholic that is exactly their approach. That does a very good job of explaining why we aren't going after OL and a few other positions. But it doesn't adequately explain some of our other choices...such as Mosley, who is almost certainly too slow to play cornerback. (4.6-4.8 40)

We are almost as thin at LB and DB, as DL. As we found out with the injury to Rippy last year, we are one injury away from a decimated linebacking core. Web, Major, and Rippy will be sufficient if they can stay healthy. But behind them we are very thin and/or slow.

Daigh and some others on the roster are unproven, in my estimation. I'm not sure Norgard is going to be able to contribute immediately at LB if there was an injury. Hopefully Harlos bulks up and moves to LB. (he is probably the fastest player on the team as he ran a 100m in 48s)

With so many holes on the roster, there is really no margin for error. There are a couple commits we have which I seriously question should make our final cut right now... We really need Rippy, Hooker, Lewis(wa),and Wright. Crawley is probably quick enough to play cover corner. If he doesn't sign, then Leo Thomas (who looks like a better corner prospect than Mosley) I would love to have Breslin too, but that seems unlikely. We need these players more than pretty much any other position or player one could envision. (more important than a 4 star TE, WR, RB, OL)

I hope the reason we are taking these extra DT is because we have locked up some of the recruits listed above. If we do, then we are going to be very competitive next year.

We are in a terrible bind. I blame our idiot AD who gave Hawkins an extra year or 3 to take our money and ruin our tradition, but i digress.

I don't have McNamara on this essential list because Ray looks like he is going to be very good. If McNamara does sign, i wonder if someone on the roster gets cut?

5 spots remaining

We keep Scholarships open for Macnamara, Wes Brown, Rippy, Crawley, Yuri Wright and Javon Williams. We are going to oversign by 2 or 3 players because of the injuries to Peyton Williams and Crowder, also possible attrition during the spring semester.

We need 3 more DBs at the minimum.
