Buffs vs Wazzu Thoughts

Hope many of you are making your way up to the game today... always makes Coors a tougher place to play when we can get the place rocking.

Some keys to the game this afternoon IMO...

1. Carlon Brown - This team is much better with him staying aggressive, he's been fantastic in the last 5-6 games and has really helped us mature. We need to continue to find him looks in post up situations, as he's proven to be nearly unguardable down there when he's matched up on a guard.

2. Askia Booker - I've been hard on Booker at times for his inconsistent and erratic play (typical for a frosh of course). The last three games he's been consistent but patient, and hasn't had more than 1 TO in each of those games, that's HUGE for his development and this team.

3. Team defense - Has been FANTASTIC the last few weeks, this needs to continue. Dinwiddie and Carlon have really stepped it up in this department and it's proven huge. Of course Andre is a beast and swallows up any loose rebounds down low. Wazzu is a very good FG% team nationally, we'll need to limit that and chase passes, they score frequently off assists, we need to force dribble drives baseline and rotate.

4. Matchups - Wazzu has one of the best post players in the conference in Brock Motum. Despite my hatred for SHT, he NEEDS to play minutes today. He doesn't need to dominate, he just needs to not be a liability, can that happen? Also, Austin will need to play big in the post. There other two best players are BIG guards, luckily with Spencer and Carlon we match up fairly well in that department, but they'll need to stay focused defensively.

This is a classic TRAP game coming off a big win and a huge loss for them. We need to get up early in this one and crush their soul early. Coming out of these first 3 games undefeated is a MUST, we lose today, we ruin all the good things we've done in the first two games.

agreed until bold.

Really Darth? I'm a huge proponent of protecting home court, no reason to lose to conference foes in the bottom half of the conference there, you don't want to give opponents any inclination that they can come into Coors and beat us. It needs to be a mindset that Coors is a very tough place to play, that's a distinct advantage when those thoughts are already in the head of the opponent. Wazzu is a team we NEED to beat, and being 2-1 is where we SHOULD have been after 3 games, we have a chance to improve on that... we gotta get it done.

I think it is an important game. I just don't think it will undo everything we have done up to this point. We will still be 2-1, which I thought was our best case scenario going into this stretch.

If we are looking at the potential of winning 20 games and challenging in the conference this year, this is a "must win" game. If all we're thinking is that it would be nice to finish around .500 for the year and get in the CBI, it's just another game.
