Mater Dei is playing Christ the King in a big HS hoops tourney they've been showing all day. These are some of the best programs in the country involved in this.

Would love to see Xavier Johnson light it up for Mater Dei and represent the Buffs.

Jk, just a postgame report will do.

recorded as well. Dei starts 4 guards and a Forward (Xavier is the forward). Xavier is jumping for the ball and the announcers mentioned Colorado in the first 30 seconds.

Xavier looks good. Announcer said that "Colorado got a steal".

He had 4 of Mater Dei's first 7 points and a couple rebounds, but then I missed the rest of the 1st quarter with work. The nerve of people to bother me during a high school basketball game, huh?

1st quarter recap: Xavier wins the tipoff (against a much bigger player), Dei misses the shot and they set up in a 3-2 zone on defense with Xavier guarding down low. One a missed shot he feezes and wait for the ball to come to him and CTK (Christ The King) player jumps in front of him and boxes him out. He is really going to need to work on his anticipation and not wait for the ball to get to him. On offense he sets up in the low post with his back to the basket, gets the ball and does a great spin post up where he literally hangs in the air forever. First two points of the game for him. Beat on another rebound by having bad position again. Gets a rebound right off the rim on the next defensive series. Misses a 3 a few possessions later but cleans the boards on the other end and starts and nice fast break.

4:14 gets a board and misses a layup but grabs his own rebound and puts it in. He know has 4 and Colorado is mentioned again. They get a good defensive stop and he races down the floor and could have an easy layup, but his team-mate doesn't give him the ball.

3:23 grabs a great board and passes the length of the floor to reward his teammate running the floor

2:33 badly air-balls a 3 point attempt, he is now 0-2 behind the arc. The next possession he shakes the defender out of his shoes and has a nice layup where he shows great athleticism.

1:22 It looks like a hard foul on Xavier and he hits the floor, looks to be okay, but I think they call it on him? not sure what happened here, but Xavier is now on the bench.

Reinhardt from Dei looks great, amazing outside shot. Xavier looks the most athletic and if he can get a consistent outside shot is going to be great.

2nd quarter: Xavier is still on the bench

7:00 Xavier is back in the game

5:26 tap the ball to a team-mate on a defensive rebound and the next series get an over the back call when he tries it again. He didn't box out and allowed the guy to get positioning on him.

4:10 Xavier gets a great boards and kicks out the fast break, he is good at finding the outlet to get it started. He races down the floor and gets an offensive board off a missed shot, but misses the dunk.

3:51 - Xavier gets an offensive board and gets fouled on the shot when he immediately turns and drives to the hoop. Gets the shooters touch to make the first one roll in and also make the 2nd. He now has 8 points and 8 boards.

he is now on the bench with almost 4 minutes left. He never gets back in the game in the 1st half and his team is up 46-33.

3rd quarter:

3rd quarter starts and they are now in a man defense (which is weird since the 3-2 and 2-1-2 zone causes CTK to shoot under 40% in the 1st half). Xavier immediately locates his man and boxes out, but the ball goes out the other side. In the first half, he would lose the nearest man when boxes out, but does much better in a man defense. One the other end he fakes a 3 and gets held up by the box but shows a great spin moves and lays a short jumper off the glass. He uses the glass really well for a youngster. That is 10 points for those of you at home.

5:19 gets the ball in the post and has a half spin that leaves the defender wonder where he went. He misses the lay-in and gets his own board and is fouled. Colorado is mentioned AGAIN. and they mention Josh Scott. Draws another foul fighting to cut to the hoop. He grabs a board and misses the dunk and hangs onto the rim and tries to dunk again without letting go (which is illegal)

3:31 CTK presses and Xavier gets the ball, he lets the ball get away from him and has a turnover. He is fouled really hard at the other end of the floor. 1st shot is nothing but net, 2nd shot is the same. I believe he is 4-4 from the stripe. He is a bit skinny and needs to add some strength. After his shots he goes to the bench.

1:41 Xavier is on the bench and may not see much more action as his team is up 71-38 against a very good team. His teammate Reinhardt that is going to UNLV has made 7 3 pointers and has close to 30 points, but he never looks to pass the ball ever. Xavier is a much better teammate and more athletic, but Reinhardt has an amazing shooting touch.

End of 3rd.

Watched the second half. Looked like Xavier took a back seat to Katin Reinhart who dropped 35 including 9 threes. Love the athleticism almost had a nasty tip dunk, the kid can get up.

4th quarter:

our boy is back out there to start the 4th quarter. It is a serious rout right now, but it will be nice to see how hard he plays. Gets a great rebound on the 1st defensive series and is much better at positioning and boxing out when playing in a man defense.

Next defensive series gets a reaching foul when playing some help defense.

6:16 I think he draws a charge when the offense player lowers his shoulder while going for a drive, but the announcers are way out of it at this point and aren't even talking about the game so not sure.

5:36 I think almost all the starters are out at this point except Reinhardt who I think has played the entire game.

4:41 now all the starters are gone and the score is 79-43

Xavier never see the court in the rout. Overall he is the most athletic player on the team and notched a double double (I think). From this one game alone, he needs to work on his outside shot but looked surprisingly good in the post. Hopefully he can put on some muscle during the summer but I think we have found ourselves a good player.

litterally?

Xavier looked pretty good overall today, I was very impressed once again with his overall skillset... he's a tremendous passer for the 3 and has absolutely perfect footwork in the post, almost unheard of for a college 3. He'll beast down there if he ever gets a smaller man. You can see why some schools cooled on him a little because of energy concerns though. Also, he's gotta learn to box out, he uses his elite athletic ability to get a lot of boards, but when he's matched against a similarly talented opponent he gets burned a lot because he doesn't box.

All in all, the kid is going to be a tremendous reason this team is tourney bound in a few years if he works hard and buys into Tad's system.
