How many scholarships do we have for 2013?

It should only be 1. There are 2 open slots right now, but they've signed 5 and only graduate 4 seniors.

I believe Sabbatino Chen will give up his scholarship after this season giving us 2.

Sorry, this is an awful explanation.

There are currently 11 scholarship players, I believe (Chen may be 12). With 4 graduating seniors, and 5 incoming freshman, they'll have 13 on scholarship next year, including Chen (who I expect to be on scholarship next year, regardless of his status this year). Chen will then be the only graduating senior after the 12-13 season, leaving one open scholarship for the 2013 class. This is, of course, barring a surprise signing this spring (we have room for one more next year) or additional attrition over the next 18-24 months.

Wasn't he given Cain's scholarship. I believe we have one.

He was only given a scholarship this year because it was available. He earned it, but it was a short-term agreement.

I think Chen will keep the scholarship next year. If it goes elsewhere (an incoming freshman, transfer, etc.), the staff loses their only 2013 scholarship, and any shot at Hamilton, Thomas, Jones, Hopkins, etc. Chen should benefit by being the only junior on the team right now.

I went to the roster and did a double-check. http://www.allbuffs.com/showthread.php/62823-2011-Colorado-Basketball-Roster-amp-Schedule

Freshman: 5 Incoming
Sophomores: 2 (Ski and Mayor)
Juniors:5 (Sharpe, Roberson, Adams, Tunks, Mills)
Seniors: (Chen)**

I count 12 with Chen being the possible 13th. And of course attrition.

Another question. What are the chances that Tunks, Adams or Sharpe don't utilize their redshirt year and graduate in four years? I know Sharpe isn't much of an academic but I have no clue about Tunks or Adams.

Tunks and Adams have both redshirted. Mills has not.

very surprised that Mills did not redshirt this year since he has only seen a few minutes of game time. I am guessing that Tad doesn't think he fits in his system and doesn't want to bank any years for him.

Without Cain, this could change. Especially if any players end up in foul trouble.

Yep, same as I got. I just counted Chen as #13, because I expect the staff to reward him and, at the same time, preserve that 2013 scholarship.

no disrespect to sabeteno because i appreciate his effort and brains, but lets be real, he is not deserving of a scholarship. With CU making a big splash in basketball, those scholarships should be extremely valued. We have some serious talent that are on our radar and I think that we should not handcuff ourselves by only having one scholarship. Anyone else have thoughts?

Coach Boyle has been very straight with the Chen family. As I understand it, the deal was that if Sabatino transferred to CU he would be a walk on unless the program had a scholarship open for any particular year he was here. The last 2 years, we have had one available and he has been on scholarship. They understand it is a year-to-year thing.

For the record, this is multiple sources but not direct knowledge. It could be wrong, but I trust the info.

Chen has probably shown enough that he could warrant a scholarship (at least compared to Mills, Sharpe, and the bench riding champion of the world Eckloff) but I wouldn't give him one. As Nik said he came here with the understanding that he was going to be a walk-on but lucked into scholarships the past two years because we had an extra to give including last year when he didn't even play. Two out of three years is pretty good considering it was supposed to be zero out of three years and he gets in-state tuition anyways.

Lets just say I would feel differently about taking away Chen's scholly if he came from the inner city.

Yeah, I couldn't disagree with this more. Chen's been great, he's done everything asked of the team and while he may not have big time BCS talent, he's been a proven contributor. There are quite a few players on this team that I would take off of scholarship before I dumped Chen. Kid's been a rock star and completely underappreciated during his time here.

So... how many scholarships do we have?

For 2012 -- we could have another one if we wanted, but that would involve taking Chen off of scholarship or attrition.

For 2013 -- Chen's will come off of the books, so we'll have one. I honestly think the number will be 2 or 3 though.

I don't think Chen's situation impacts the counts at all. Unless the staff signs someone else this spring, we'll have one scholarship to work with in 2013, regardless of if Chen's on scholarship next year or not.

So basically, nobody knows.
Regardless of Chen's situation, there's one available for 2013 as of today. IF the staff decides to use it his spring (which is probably unlikely ), that's gone. Attrition could create more.

So, we have one if we keep Chen on scholarship, two if we don't, and maybe more if there's attrition. Got it.

Kind of sucks for Chen. He's played well enough to warrant a scholarship, while guys like Eckloff and SHT seem to be doing little more than taking up space.

OK, this is getting ridiculous. The men can have 13 scholarships. As of this exact moment, assuming no attrition or redshirts over the next five years, this is what we're looking at:

2011-12 season -- 12 on scholarship (including Chen)
2012-13 season -- 13 on scholarship (including Chen)
2013-14 season -- 12 on scholarship
2014-15 season -- 7 on scholarship
2015-16 season -- 5 on scholarship

We will have 1 scholarship to give for the class of 2013. If there is attrition, then we'll have more, but we have at LEAST one scholarship for the class of 2013.

EDIT -- BTW, Snow made a great table for analyzing our roster. Rep him for it.
