Ringo: Baseball doesn't make sense at CU

I'm sure Goose loves the headline.

Baseball isn't going to work at CU and maybe this was a situation where Bohn asked Ringo to break the news to the seamheads.

Only Air Force still has a baseball team and they are not funded by the state but by the feds & Department of Defense. CSU & Wyoming shuttered their programs in the past as well and they would have been our regional rivals in addition to playing the Pac-12 schools.

We need a spring sport to follow at CU real badly and baseball isn't the answer. Not all Pac-12 schools sponsor softball as well so we don't need softball. I proposed rugby due to its similairity to football but it appears men's lacrosse would make the most sense at this point but the problem is conference affilation at this point. We could play in the ECAC which includes Denver and Air Force.

ice hockey it is.

Not a Spring sport. I do like your suggestion, though.

Ringo is being moronic. CSU and WYO may not have baseball teams, but I'm pretty sure DU does, as does Air Force and UNC. The Pac 12 money will make it feasible, if they decide to bring it back. WYO and CSU don't have anywhere near the resources that CU has. It's a ridiculous argument.

Sacky,

DU doesn't have a baseball team either so that leaves AFA and UNC. Greeley is further away from the foothills and is able to have baseball

Tante,

Love your idea but it would be expensive plus it is not a spring sport. We really need spring sports to take attention off football and basketball did a very nice job this year.

Men's lacrosse makes sense at this point and if CU fans show up to the women's lacrosse games, it could convince the adminstration that men's lacrosse should be on the way.

most likely it will start with men's lacrosse, but I wonder how much pressure there will be to put together a baseball team so we can fit in with the PAC. Here are some Division 1 teams we could play in baseball:

Creighton
New Mexico
Air Force
BYU
TCU
New Mexico State
UNC
Kansas
Kansas State
Wichita State
Nebraska
South Dakota State

DU only has a club team

I agree with adding MLAX next.

I also think we need to find a way to get Men's Soccer at CU (if for no other reason than to ensure we can grab a walk-on kicker better than we had after Crosby graduated). But I do believe there's a market in this state and on the P-12 Network, especially as it reaches into the Pacific Rim.

Wrestling would also be a good winter sport.

The problem is Title IX and making sure that we have enough women's scholarships allocated to make this work.

Women's Rowing (20 scholarships), Gymnastics (12) and Field Hockey (12), here we come.

- MLAX (12.6), Soccer (9.9), Wrestling (9.9)

That would be 44 for the women and 32.4 for the men. Might even allow us to bring Men's Tennis back (4.5).

*In case anyone was wondering, Baseball (11.7) and Softball (12) also balance.

We'd have to start the season on the road in the sun belt region.

just look at what Greeley does, they open at home versus North Dakota State at the end of Feb and then on to Washington State and then host South Dakota State.

Metro has had 13 home dates scheduled already. 5 of them have been cancelled or postponed, but they got the rest in. (Although they might have preferred to cancel/postpone the CMU series where they got pummeled pretty badly :smile2:).

Mines has had 8 home dates, and they don't show any postponements/cancellations. That may just be the way they are posting their schedule, though...

Regis has had 17 home dates scheduled. The first 4 were cancelled, but since then it appears they've gotten everything in.

Spring baseball in the Denver/Boulder area isn't impossible, but you do have to plan for a few postponements...

How did you get out of law school without knowing what evidence is or how to interpret it?
I see you are going for specific personal details again. When in doubt and on shallow ground while feeling vulnerable on an issue, attack the other party. You would make a good candidate for office.

I believe Men's soccer is a fall sport but given the popularity of college football, that ought to become a spring sport instead.

Suppose we do MLAX, that looks like we will be getting more sports into CU...just consider that as a good trojan horse.

I want baseball. DU has good hockey and lacrosse programs, so, for now, I can go to those games. I would love for CU to have those as well, but I want baseball first. I think it is pathetic that the flagship university of the State of Colorado does not have a baseball program.

I don't want anything to do with baseball at CU. The weather doesn't work, there are a few quality kids in state but not enougn to form the foundation of a competitive team (especially in the PAC,) even if you could keep all of them here which you won't. Outside of a few seamheads, nobody would consistently go watch a losing program. We don't have the facilities and to build them would mean taking up valuable space on campus (much better used for an indoor practice facility) or going away from campus meaning even less fans there, not to mention the millions it would cost to build them.

Baseball would be a losing moneypit for CU. There is a reason the other schools dropped it.

I think the novelty of a baseball team would wear off quickly after a couple seasons of us getting our brains beat in by the rest of the PAC-12 schools.

Any available money should go directly to the football team. Add something cheap like mens ping pong.

If it's all about being competitive, then yeah, I suppose fielding a baseball team wouldn't make much sense. OTOH, we won't be competitive in hockey, lacrosse, men's soccer, etc. either. Baseball has some side benefits that we haven't taken into account, though. Lots of football players want to play baseball, too. I think just having a baseball team would provide some benefit to the rest of the athletic department. I say this, and I would have no intention of going to the games themselves. I just believe that it's important to field a baseball program at a major D-1 school.

We should just play the games in folsom. Put home plate in the South end of the stadium under the COLORADO, and have a 500 ft center field wall (Dal Ward), and 150 foot walls in left and right. That would be exciting.

Competitiveness needs to be an issue if the sport is going to a big expense to the department.

Some football players want to play baseball as well. I would not say "lots," not enough for it to be an overriding reason to add the sport.

So you're saying that you don't think CU has the resources to be competitive with DU?

This is crappy article by Ringo. There's no data to drive his assertion that CU can't afford it. Let's assume that conservative estimates around Pac 12 money are accurate, and that CU is going to get $25M/year from the Pac 12 contract, including P12 network fees. CU ran in the black for the last year in the B12, right? The payout from those guys that year was like $10M/year, right? So, where does that $15M/year go under Ringo's assumptions here if not to sports like baseball (or baseball/softball)? A baseball and softball team certainly wouldn't cost more than that, right?
