What makes Tosh Lupoi such a great recruiter?

We all understand what each school can sell. Academics, access to the NFL draft, championships, school location, facilities, tradition, etc.

But what makes Tosh Lupoi arguably the best recruiter in the country? How does he take prospects that are high on other schools and immediately flip them to his school - even getting immediate verbals out of him.

Is it simply his personality? What is he selling?

I never really understood why middle aged men have such enormous impacts on where a recruit decides to play (especially Tosh)

He has two things going for him:

1. Age-He is 30 so he can relate to players more than most assistant coaches.
2. Development of players-Had a player drafted in the 1st round in both 2010 and 2011. Another drafted this year.

Because those middle aged men know people, people with $$$$ and influence. People that promise the kids they'll get into the NFL. I'm not gonna say that UW or it's boosters are paying the players, since this seems to be a Lupoi thing, and not a school thing, but I'll wager agents are funneling cash around. It'd be interesting to see if Lupoi's recruits have a tendency to be signed by one agency or another.

Well, Lupoi had two players drafted in the first round quite recently, so he is more than just promising kids they will get to the NFL. Funny how that is basically our staff's biggest selling point, but other schools using it becomes sketchy.

The thing I don't like about him is the fact that he screwed Cal, his alma matter, so bad.

Solich should take out 200k from the facilities fund and invest that in Tosh. Immediate return imo

It happens, but he got out while the getting was good. Embree and EB left their alma mater for a better opportunity, look where it took them.

I am serious. I'd like to know where these folks are ranked as far as recruiting. I'm kinda outta that loop.

Lupoi has been named recruiter of the year.

Right now, the Pac-12 has 5 of the heavyweights in recruiting:

Tosh Lupoi (Washington)
Ed Orgeron (USC)
Adrian Klemm (UCLA)
Derek Mason (Stanford)
Don Pellum (Oregon)

He likely would have helped Cal land several blue chips in the 2012 class if he had not left either.

Thanks everyone. Pretty interesting.

A lot of highly ranked recruiters come from winning programs, which makes sense since winning makes it easier to recruit. I think the Buff staff is pretty amazing considering we have sucked for so long and rating agencies drop player's stars once they commit to CU.
