UCLA is three scollies over the limit as spring practices conclude and school winds down. Who could have ever seen this coming?

edit: didn't realize you meant the current team, not their recruiting class.

they will just cut some guys to make the limit. saban would be proudc.

From the conference call
"Probably a combination of both [grayshirting and cutting current players]. I've talked to all our recruits and all our current players about their futures at UCLA."

Glass houses. Before I rip on UCLA for this, I want to see how Embree handles some things.

That said, we definitely talked a lot about how UCLA was oversigning in a major way for the 2012 class. Maybe there's another P-Rich out there who isn't going to be happy with his situation?

Maybe, but we do not have room!

Not for a freshman. But, hypothetically, let's say that UCLA cut loose a junior tight end or defensive tackle and gave an unconditional release. Even if the guy wasn't likely to be a starter for us, he might be someone we'd want to fill in our depth chart.

I dont understand why the NCAA lets this go on with out punishment. You could oversign every year and bring in fresh talent and kick out the bottom feeders of your team. Imagine Embree saying "now kid, I promise you immediate playing time to the best recruits in the country". You could literally sign 40 players and cut the players who have been bench warmers their whole career. Why should a senior or junior be punished for playing and not only commiting their life to a team but to a school, by getting their scholarship taken away to give to a fresh kid. Thius isnt the NFL were if you dont play good enough you're out of a job. These are still kids who can have their whole life ****ed up by a greedy coach only wanting to win.

You expect the NCAA to look out for the student athletes?

No, I expect the NCAA to stop the influence of professional sports on the college level.

It's going the other direction. I posted it in the CU News / Olympic Sports forum. NCAA and MLB are looking to partner with MLB footing the bill to expand the game of college baseball. Welcome to the future.

All things considered, I am not sure who that UCLA could cut loose tbat Embree would give a scholly to.

I have no idea. But if there was an opportunity, I'd trust Embree here. He'd get very solid info on UCLA players from his son and from Slick Rick.

That was my first thought. Of all schools, UCLA is definitely one school where he can gather a lot of player info from his son.

This has the potential of coming back to bite UCLA on the ass. "Cutting" scholarship athletes becomes known to high school kids, high school coaches, etc. some of whom will think twice before going to UCLA in the future.

Grades are probably just now coming back. We will probably see some attrition.

Finals end tomorrow sometime, I think 7:30 is the latest final so they should be in my Sunday for the most part.

I agree. Was more just making a general statement that we all knew the numbers would not add up for UCLA in an easy way.

The grayshirt talk from Embree and the numbers tossed around for 2013 means some unpopular moves are likely coming.

I was thinking RB as well, where they have Dalton Hilliard and Malcolm Jones not getting much play behind Franklin. Sam Handler is also on their team. I think he is Gus' brother considering he's from Barrington, IL.
