I was interested to see if anyone has heard of Centers we may be pursuing for the 2014 class? SHT will be a senior next year and that will leave us with potentially one center on the roster for the 2014-2015 season (pending the Ben Mills situation). I feel like we are going to have to add another legit 6'10 + to the team or we will become too small to significantly match up with the top schools. *I know Boyle runs a faster paced, smaller offense, but I feel like we do need some height to be come a legit powerhouse team

I agree that I'd like to see us recruit more bigs. I think it's easier to find big-bodied 6'7"-6'9" guys who can play versus landing a good true center. If we can find a true center, I'm all for it, but I don't want to be reaching for one.

Shane will only be a junior this coming year, though.

I agree, we're going to need a player who can give Scott a break and Roberson will most likely be gone after this year and I'm not sure if Gordon is a pure center. Looking at the 2013 offers, we've offered two guys who are 6'8" (Marcus Lee and Zena Edosomwan), but none that are taller than their listed 6'8". I've heard that Boyle is looking for shooting type players this cycle so maybe we will see more offers out to big men in the 2014 class.

I completely agree about the 6'7"-6'9" part. I just feel like we are moving in the right direction as a program to solidify ourselves as a Top-25 team yearly with Boyle. I think as a program we need to establish some solid height like the other major programs if we want to reach and sustain that level of success. I know comparing ourselves to a program like Syracuse is a reach, but they land top centers year after year and keep that height in their program. I am not saying we land Top-5 centers every year, but it would be nice to have anywhere from 2-3 6'10+ bigs on our team yearly.

With the style Tad likes to play everyone on the floor has to be reasonably athletic and mobile. You can't have a big statue in the middle gumming things up. While I am sure that Tad would like to have a guy who is 6'11" and can move so would everybody else in the country. Problem is that there are very few of those guys out there and they usually head to the NBA after one year so even the teams that have one are competing to replace them.

As much as we would like to have one, not that many other teams have one either so matching up isn't often a big problem. When you do face one you can usually deal with it by adjusting your defense and doing some things offensively to take the guy out of the game some.

Scott is not a true center but is over 6'9" and still growing. Gordon keeps getting listed at 6'7" but I have heard multiple reports that he is also about 6'9" and still growing as well, he looked when I saw him this year. Gordon plays a more natural center type of game.

If we get a chance at one I'd love to have a 7' guy who is over 260lbs and can dominate the paint but those guys are few and far between. We are better off with guys who are slightly smaller and can play than a big guy who is a marginal athlete.

I would rather have a 6'10" guy who can shoot lights out. Then a 7-footer that makes a few layups.

Yeah uh about that, there's not many of those players out there. You need big bodies down low on defense, we got killed by Stanford because we didn't have any capable big bodies down low.

Josh? Hes like 6'9" - 6' 10" who can shoot.

I'd take either.

But what I really want from a true center is more on the defensive end. Those guys can completely change the way you defend. Teams can't post up against you and they also settle for jump shots because if they take it inside it's either getting blocked or altered into a miss. A good defensive center can legitimately make your FG% defense 10 points better.

Yep, I would love for us to get a guy like Fab Melo/Kendrick Perkins. Then again, so does every program in the counter. Personally don't like the ones Flounder talked about, those type of players are usually terrible rebounders.

Hmm, Interesting, My mind set was more on the Offensive game.

Offensively, you can score points with ball movement and shooting. We've done it two years in a row now and I don't think it's a fluke. While it's nice to have a post presence when the shots aren't falling, it's probably not as critical. But when you put a big shot-blocking and rebounding presence in the paint, it completely changes the way other teams approach you.

That's why I don't think a 7-Footer is essential. I think Dre, Wes, and X and pull down boards next year. I believe they will do it better then any other Pac-12 Team. Enter SHT and Josh. All we will be doing is picking up the trash.

Look at Dre's stat lines against Stanford and UCLA.

Ideally, we should be able to match bigs against teams like that so Dre can do his thing coming off the wing. It will be the same with X. Against most teams, you can get away with Dre at the 4, but when I look ahead to KU, UCLA and others on our schedule we need the bodies to let him play a good amount of the game at the 3.

Are we even offering any big men? And if we aren't then why not

No point in offering if they aren't good enough. Good big guys are very hard to find. If we aren't in on the top, there are better players to get than second tier centers.
