Any chance of beating USC in the next few years?

Maybe I've too optimistic, but I actually think we're not too far off from competing with most of the Pac-12 south. USC, on the other hand, looks scary. I know they have limited scholarships for the next two years, but they're effectively recruiting purely 4 and 5 star caliber players. Not only that, but they have brand new facilities that are allegedly incredible. The only rays of hope I see are (1) scholarship limiations might actually hurt them, particularly in the trenches, and (2) Lane Kiffin. Unfortunately, (1) recruiting has been very strong and (2) Lane Kiffin is showing signs of perhaps being a decent coach. Thoughts?

we have a better change of building a south campus on the moon. And I thought we were closer than we really are on the whole south thing too, but we still suck. UCLA and Arizona State both absolutely crushed us last year. We might be competitive in the south in a few years, but not even close to USC, unless none of their 5 star recruits pan out and they have a ton of injuries.

Kiffin showing signs of improving as a coach? That's news to me.

To answer the question, no.

2013 will give a good indication of how large the gap is. We'll return pretty much our whole team while they lose a ton. Game will be at Folsom. It will tell a lot.

2013 and 2014 could be very interesting around here depending on how good a coach embo actually is. We will be returning basically our whole roster in these two seasons. 2014 should be loaded with juniors. And if P-Rich redshirts this year 2014 would be his final season, the only thing in 2014 is we could be breaking in a new QB depending on what shane dillon does when he gets here.

USC is going to have a ton of attrition over the next several yaers. We will beat them by 2016.

Not with the current cast of offensive skill position players.

The crazy part is that the top 3 WRs at USC (Robert Woods, Marqise Lee and George Farmer) were at the same HS (Gardena Serra in Cali) at the same time as P-Rich. That's a ridiculous amount of talent for a HS.

So, If someone asked, 2 years ago, what the chances of the men's bball team winning the PAC would be, what would you have said? I can't believe what a loser mentality we have.

SC does tend to lose one game a year to a far lesser opponent. Is our team worse than the stanford team of 06 that beat SC at home? We won't know til the season starts. We're going to get rolled in l.a. this year. The coming years should be different as long as the mindset continues to change.

Stubbed their toe against some mediocre Oregon State teams a couple times, too.

That said, I don't see us beating them anytime soon. More concerned with beating the "manageables" for the time being and making a freaking bowl game. Then, we'll focus on conference championships once we're at least within some semblance of striking distance.

I would have said about the same chance of the Pac-12 not having a team ranked in the Top 25 all year.

OK, whats the deal with scholarships for USC? Don't the scholarship sanctions kick in after this season?

They've already been in affect the last two years (IIRC). Lane Kiffin found a loop hole where he could add EE's that count towards the previous year. That's how USC has been able to add more than 15 this year and last. They however have to stay under 75 schollies, and won't be able to do the EE trick next year.

As for the OP's question.

It's possible, but it's going to require a lot of luck and some great coaching. All signs point to no, but if we have a QB that is solid then we may have a shot at Folsom next year. We aren't going to be favored and we will be big underdogs, but it's possible. Not probable, but possible.

And the teams that have beat USC have very good coaches. Riley and Harbaughare proven (Harbaugh ended up being a major stud) coaches at this level. No one expected Stanford--weren't they 26 point dogs?--to win. Embree has yet to demonstrate that he's that good of a coach yet. Doesn't mean it can't happen, but there is no indication of it yet.

I pretty much agree with Buffnik. I think by 2013/14 we could be in a position to upset them, and we'll be at least competitive with them.

I also think the sanctions will hurt them more than people think and that the toll will start in 2013 and last thru 2015. Now, if, and I still believe it's a big if, Kiffen is any good, they will still be nationally ranked thru that period. But unless he has a better staff than he's had before, I believe they will start to look bad. Of course, I originally predicted that Kiffen would be fired within 5 years. So we will see.

I wonder how Lane will be able to transition once Monte retires. At 72 years old, he can't be running the defense and providing support for running an organization forever. Monte's on par with Dick LeBeau as the greatest defensive mind of that generation. You don't simply replace that.

You don't, but Monte has many disciples and connections. USC's latest defensive hires (Marvin Sanders & Scottie Hazelton) were disciples of disciples of old man Monte.

With Barkley gone the spread at least won't be as bad next year. I don't see CU getting close to USC until we show some team speed on the field. That goes the same for Oregon. We need more of our athletes to come through on defense.

I think Harbaugh showed that smashmouth football is one way you can get to USC. Of course he had Luck running his offense the last few years which helps.
