Athletic Hypocrisy

Why is it that during the Olympics everyone in the state gets behind Missy Franklin for her great performances (and well deserved).

Yet, if a CU athlete in football or even basketball does well, then there is much teeth mashing?

Well, for starters.. the state is already divided by collegiate athletics. You have the Buffs, rams, AF, UNC, fuskers, etc.. so of course there is going to be division of loyalties. Missy is still just a teenager with no one to represent but herself and her country, so everyone gets on board with that.

Come on dio, the whole state was behind the Buffs in basketball. CU football starts winning, they will get support too. We were huge during our elite years.

My favorite hypocrisy?

Western athlete sets WR/does something amazing etc. "What an incredible athlete! What an achievement!"

Eastern athlete sets WR/does something amazing etc. "Oh my god! How did that happen? He/she has to be juiced."

Easy, in this case Missy is born and bred Coloradoan. But CU athletes can be from anywhere outside of Colorado, plus your run of the mill college athletic event is no where as near polarizing (in a good way) or uniting as any Olympic event. I see your view point but winter or summer Olympics will take the front seat every time and its not because of any CU loathing even though there seems to be plenty of that

Was there teeth gnashing about Chauncey's success?

Only eastern commies.

Probably the other way around if you lived in the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War. It's a sorry remnant of those days.

That said, I don't trust the Chinese.

Take the swimmers. Ye Shiwen, Meilutyte v Ledecky, Franklin ... or gymnastics, where everybody questions the age of some of them.

Phelps is breaking records left, right and center and nobody even dares to question it in this day and age, where doping is very prevalent. I am not accusing Phelps or anyone else of anything here, trying to belittle his achievements or trying to tear him down, but what would the reaction be if his name wasn´t Michael Phelps and his nationality American, but rather Mikhail Phelvski, the Russian? That´s my only question.

what does age have to do with juicing?

and are you basing your judgment on the nbc coverage of the games? if so, i think you are going to find some western bias in favor of the north american athletes both in coverage and commentary...that is the nature of american journalists.

you already know that jensie, i'm surprised it affects you at all.

I don't know anything about Meilutyte, but I do always question any results from Chinese athletes because they've been caught numerous times systematically cheating as an official government policy (whether government run doping programs or intentionally misrepresenting ages).

I don't question any other nation as a general policy. Sure anyone could be cheating, but I'm only automatically suspicious of Chinese athletes.

Nothing, but there is a minimum age, I think, and at least in Beijing questions were raised whether they were old enough to be eligible = cheating.

I´ve actually watched very, very little of NBC´s coverage for obvious reasons, I am rather talking about the general mindset in the West.

Maybe I am just too cynical.

(FTR, doping in soccer is the biggest taboo discussion I´ve ever seen on any level and I´d LOVE it to be public topic, but nobody dares to touch it. Anywhere)

Don't trust any of the Chinese athletes as clean. They've even cheated on age.

No ****. Phelps is the exception to the rule. The guy eats anything, likes the herb and, according to his teammates, doesn't put in the pool time that they do. I think he is just a freak/savant at swimming.

Yeah. It seemed like Phelps used Olympic week to get into meet shape. Unreal.

imagine how good he would be if he still had the effort. To cruise to multiple golds in your THIRD OLYMPICS is just insane.

Other than speeding up recovery time for injuries, I don't see how 'roids or HGH would help soccer players much. Am I missing something?

Jens said "doping". Blood doping is when you use drugs to increase the number of red blood cells -- major boost for aerobic stamina.

What nik said. And those 2 factors are huge in a world where players regularly play 60+ matches a season.
