Wish List for CU Sports

It's 2013 and it's a good time to do a wish list for sports teams at CU.

I still wish for rugby at CU but I'm thinking that men's & women's hockey at CU plus men's lacrosse and men's soccer should be on the wish list for CU.

Are they still planning on building a new soccer stadium on the South Campus? I hope they build a seperate track & field stadium so the soccer stadium could also host lacrosse games as well. It can be very nice but it doesn't have to have a lot of seating. That stadium should be modeled after the rugby stadium in Glendale.

hockey, baseball, rugby.... this things aren't coming.

If it is going to require significant new facilities, then it won't happen.

How hard could it be to get other sports when schools like Washington State and Utah have more teams than us? Anyway, I think men's lacrosse would be easy since they are getting a women's team.

Men's soccer, when I was at CU there were some damn good players on campus. I think CU would be an easy sell to a soccer player.

We have this conversation every year. I'll play anyway.

1. Hockey
2. Swimming/diving
3. Wrestling
4. Baseball/softball.

Women's Rowing.

It's the 20 scholarship gift from Title IX that lets us add a couple quality men's sports.

CU needs to step up to the big leagues and do what so many other D1 schools have done... pick a handful of all-state female honors students every year who have never picked up an oar (and probably think "coxswain" is slang for "limp dick"). Put them on scholarship for rowing. Teach them the sport and hope they do ok. Cheap to do and allows a lot.

Soccer and LAX make the most sense for the men. Those would take up 22.5 scholarships and probably make our ratios better since it's about a 50/50 split between the new women's scholarships and the new men's scholarships. Larger denominator reduces the impact of the 85 for football being about impossible to balance out with women's sports.

Suppose Folsom Field's renovation goes through, is there a chance we see the playing field widened not only for the safety of the football players but the possibly of soccer and lacrosse games? Having all those events at Folsom Field would be awesome IMO.

I'm not sure how to widen the field of play at Folsom without taking out a bunch of seats. I doubt that's on the agenda.

Rugby doesn't require significant new facilities. It can make use of the same fields as soccer or lacrosse (or football). It requires very little in the way of equipment. It doesn't even require full scholarships to be competitive for championships. It's by far the easiest to get good at fast and it also has the benefit of being both an Olympic sport and a sport that is growing rapidly around the country (fastest growing by percentage per Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association study, second fastest in total number growth).

Why play that in a 50k plus seat stadium anyway?

I believe there could be more use of Folsom Field than six football games a year plus one more for spring football...given what makes it special, I think Folsom Field could be used more often.

I wouldn't want to see Folsom renovated to widen the field. One of the things I love about the stadium is the fact that the stands are right on top of the field. Widening it for some of the other sports would remove that feel. It was the main thing I hated at UW's stadium when I was there - in fact they are renovating and removing the track, shifting their stands in. That place is going to be crazy once the renovations are complete

The short answer is no, there would be no economical way to widen Folsom. And as stated above, it would suck a lot more for football.

Second - the next men's sport added will be........... NOTHING. It's only going to happen if some donor stepped up and paid for it, and a women's sport to go with it, to offset Title ix imbalance that would be created. My son is a LAX player and is starting to get some recruiting interest. I asked Bohn one-on-one what was the chance of CU adding men's LAX as a VARSITY sport during my son's timeframe and his answer was: There will be no men's sports added anytime soon, it's not on the table, not part of any discussions whatsoever, period, end of story, dead deal. Then he added "unless you want to pay for the program"....

I'll spend it for you. Get on it 'holic:thumbsup:

We should be upgrading existing facilities for the sports we already have. The track and field facilities are awful.

Admittedly, it's been several years since I've been to Potts Field, but I know they did a fairly substantial renovation about five years ago for the Big 12 championships.

That substantial renovation basically got it the bare minimum for the Big 12 to give the green light. Let's not even talk about the indoor facilities.

This. It basically meant that there were enough port a potties and portable stands brought in for the event.

The track is a mondo surface and in good shape - they are expensive, but last a long time and are fast for sprints - though not very forgiving for doing workouts on, which sucks, since CU focuses its schollies on distance running, and they use the track for workouts.

The storage sheds are one big POS.

I don't think it would take much to improve Potts Field. The view from there is second to none. Put in some more permanent facilities as opposed to the tin sheds, pave the parking lot... I don't know what else would be needed out there. I suspect they're reluctant because the long term plan is to move all that stuff to the South Campus and they don't want to sink too much money into what amounts to temporary facilities.

I think the South Campus plan is the main consideration for Potts. The plan is for the East Campus to be a tech-heavy academic research site with nearby business parks off the Foothills Parkway used to nurture start-ups.

But they did just break ground on locker room expansions for Prentup, so maybe they've found a way to keep athletics on the East. If so, then they should do more with Potts too.
