About to enter July and we just nabbed our fifth commitment. MacIntyre has floated 16-18 as the number of scholarship players we will be taking in this class. How do the numbers break down IYO? Mine:

QB-1 (Apsay)
RB-2
WR-1
TE-1
OL-4 (Miller, 1 more OT, two interior OL)
DL-3 (2 DEs, 1 DT)
LB-3 (Wantanabe, Gamboa, 1 OLB)
DB-3 (Waz, 1 CB, 1 S)

Could see us taking four DBs and one less OL though.

Specialists were definitely a consideration, not sure taking kickers are essential, but a LS might be.

Duff, I like your initial list and think it's pretty spot on for what we will be seeing 7 months from now. It would be good to get a LS and a K/P who can kick off in the back of the end zone. Whether the specialists are by scholly or PWO I'll trust the staff's discretion.

Specifically on the interior linemen I think center is a must. Would love to get a true center out of high school as this is Handler's last year and we have Munyer for one more if he is healthy. Cotner and Kelley are unproven to this point and I would hope for someone like Najee Toran of the few available centers left on our radar. I'm dreaming if I think we can turn Risner but that would be my favorite interior option.

Agree AIK. It will be interesting to see how Cotner and/or Kelley develop this season. Center becomes less of a glaring need if one of those two steps up. But it would probably be good to get a center in this class regardless.

I think you're right on. Of the guys we've offered they pretty much fit this template. I love how much attention we're paying to the offensive line. The whole offense should be built around a strong line IMO. Last year's class was packed with solid line prospects, and this year's class shouldn't be much different. QB and WR look fairly well set, I'd expect the focus to shake out more or less like you said.

Those numbers look pretty good. We sure do have a lot of DE offers out there, so maybe we take more than 2 there.

I wouldn't mind seeing the staff take one more DB and one less RB (from your #'s above). If they plan to run a 4-2-5, they'll need to start stockpiling talent in the secondary.

1 QB - Apsay
1 RB
1 TE
1 WR
4 OL –Miller
3 DL – 2 DT 1 DE
2 LB Watanabe andGamboa
2 S - Waz
1 CB

Looks like a good projection Duff.

I hope that we are forced to alter it by picking up a later commit or two who are in the "to good to pass on" catagory even if we are "full" at that postion.

Getting back to some class balance by position is important for the future of the team but losing balance in favor of significant improvements in talent is fine with me.

looks like we could be getting an answer:

I want to see us land some good DLinemen. It seems like we never get any big name DT's! It's been a long time since we had anything decent there.

Solis? Tupou? Hennington? Bonsu?

DT recruiting is probably one place where the last staff actually improved recruiting. You can never have too many though...

If you watched our DLine last year (with Pericak) and thought we were set, I don't know what to tell you. Of course, HOPEFULLY those young guys improve. Bonsu wouldn't play for any other PAC12 team. I like Tupou the most of that group. My point is that none of them were highly sought after recruits. I'd love to see us have our highest ranked recruit be a DT. Resurrecting this team HAS GOT to start on the front lines of the offense and defense.

We didn't sign a DT last year. I view it as a HUGE need for this program and just hope we can land a really good one. I'd take a great linemen over a skill position player any day.

I think we need a dtackle this year but in fairness to Solis and company, they were freshmen.

Last year's DL played well considering it was loaded with frosh. Topou had the best upside IMO. He had some conditioning issues, but he has the frame to be a quality P12 DT. Solis is next in line. Hennington and Kofavalu are going to be good down the line too. Rasmussen was a RS, so who knows. Bottom line, the DT position was bare, and one of the things Embo did very well was to restock it with good talent. Adding another to the mix would be good though.

Never said we were set. I definitely want to see at least 1 in this class. But it's pretty foolish to say that the cupboard is bare at that position, particularly given how young those guys were last year. If you think the depth at that position isn't upgraded from a couple years ago, I don't know what to tell you.

We signed a DT in last year's class, maybe even two.

That's fine. Maybe those guys transition into the DT position. I'd still prefer that we land a Big Nasty DT who has proven his worth in the HS ranks.

I get the "They were young" excuse. They also weren't overly recruited by other Pac schools. It looks like all we hope to be at that position is average at best. I want to excel on the lines before everything. Like I said, I believe it's the key to our programs resurrection.

4-5* DTs are awesome. As all schools agree and there's like 2 of them per year on the west coast, it's somewhat difficult to get one.

Solis: UCLA, UW, Arizona, Boise St, Utah
Henington: UCLA
Tupuo: not many good offers somehow, but iirc UW and some other P12 school tried to flip him near signing day
Rasmussen: Arizona, Utah, UW

Those are not the offer lists of just worthless recruits. If we get more guys like that going forward, we'll be ok imo.

Might take two TEs. Keeney looks like a developmental player and we probably need someone to make a more immediate impact, unless things drastically change with the guys on campus.

Looks like we are getting some guys who are good enough athletes that their final position is still to be defined.

Well, they do have Center and Scott Fernandez is the only SR at TE. It's a pretty young group. Maybe they don't see it as an immediate need.

I think the fact they tried to sign a JUCO late last cycle says differently.

Bump.

Any ideas on the next recruit? Do we take another recruit before the CSU game? Somehow I doubt we do.

First of all, the recent news is we may be taking 22 in this class which is much higher than we first thought. Second of all I would be surprised if we don't have at least 1-2 more commits before the season starts. In part that is based on everything I have been reading on Rivals site about certain players who prefer us and also many guys want to get their selection over with before the start of their own season.
