Buffs Volleyball vs St Mary's Preview and Game Thread

St Mary's is a good team. They were in the tournament last year and are getting votes in the AVCA pre-season top 25 coaches poll. The first two games tonight, the Buffs looked disorganized. They were playing a lineup with 3 players that were not starters last year. Taylor Simpson, the transfer in, Kerra Schroeder who was out all but the first matches of last season with an ACL, and freshman Joslyn Hayes. They also did not look ready to block the St Mary's hitters who were hitting off of quicker, lower sets. The Buffs did seem to adjust on the block some by game 3, but couldn't get enough good consistent ball control from the back row to keep winning. The also tried a couple different starting lineups. We shall see what tomorrow brings in the re-match.
No not really. First two sets Buffs were way out of sync so I believe that stat. But the final match stats are much closer: Buffs 48 kills, 44 digs, 8 blocks and .246 hitting percentage. St Marys: 53 kills, 53 digs, 11 blocks and hitting percentage .246. Teams ended up with identical hitting percentages. The big difference was in back row play. Buffs didn't control the ball nearly as well as St Marys. That shows in the +9 on digs for St Marys. Without a good pass on the first hit, your setter is scrambling to play the ball and doesn't have the options to try for a good attack on the third hit so its much easier for the other team to read the play, set their block and their floor defense.
