Recruiting Possibilities

o_robbie

I don't think before I post
Is it possible for us to finish our recruiting strong with?
RB: Squally Canada
OL Isaiah Holland, Alex Anderson
DB: Ihenacho, C.Sutton
DL: Tuoti-Mariner,
WR: Hartley or S.Martin
Ath: D.Lee or D.Lee Campbell

Is this also the best case scenario for current realistic recruiting targets.

You're leaving out JUCOs and didn't include some of the safeties. I also don't think Squally is a target, but I could be wrong.

That's not really finishing strong.

Both lists have extremely talented and athletic players on them, many of whom hold offers from top BCS schools. Just an observation, but you seem especially critical of this staff's recruiting. Who are the players you would like to see targeted by this staff? Would they even give CU a second glance? What are the magical words that one of your "big time recruiters" would whisper into the aforementioned recruit's ear to get them to bypass the Michigans and USCs of the world? If not words, what avenues are you suggesting we take to land these prize recruits? Thank you in advance Duff for taking the time to answer, these questions have been on mind while reading many of the recruiting threads you and some others are posting in.

I left off JUCO's because ever year we hope to land some and every year we don't. I thought we were getting back in on Squally but you can flip him with Ballage. I just think Ballage is a pipe dream.

As far as the list goes. I think that is one of our better case scenarios at this time. Possibly adding L.Allen Jr in there could make it better but I think that would be a pretty nice finish by coach all things considered.

We do really need a receiving TE. I was kind of hoping that Tyler would move in that spot next season but all signs point to no.

We absolutely need one but it sounds like Dylan who is already committed may fit the bill. His numbers this year have been pretty impressive.

Hayden jones looks like an excellent blocker, good pass catcher, decent speed, he is now at 245 pounds, could be an underrated TE.

I'd like to get Ihenacho and Holland. I still think the brother tie-in w/Duke might mean something. Ballage obviously, but seems that's a long shot.

Honestly, I can't answer if you actually believe your first sentence is true.

I know that some of you (many of you?) think that Duff goes too negative on recruiting. All of the guys who are critical and frustrated take a bunch of crap. Understandable. We're fans. We tend to see things in a positive light.

But the truth of the matter is that if you are excited about the CU class, you'd be even more excited (on paper) if we had any other Pac-12 program's class.

Are these coaches working their butts off? Yes.

Will they uncover talent that others miss? Yes.

All good. But here is the problem. While CU is looking to be so much smarter than everyone else by cherry picking the guys who would usually end up starring at mid-major programs, our Pac-12 competition is winning recruits that all the big boys are after. Their margin for error is much greater. The guys they are bringing in often look like they're ready to play BCS football as juniors in high school rather than being guys who project to develop into that by the time they're 20 years old. It can work. It has worked to build programs at places like Wisconsin and Oregon State. But those are exceptions and it's hard to believe that CU has it's **** together so well that it can be one of those exceptions as this builds back up. To be excited about CU recruiting right now, you really have to swallow some Kool-Aid and believe that our staff is exceptional at identifying and developing talent within systems and an organization that is elite.

I'm actually on board. I think that we have a head coach and staff that can do what Greg Schiano did at Rutgers and Jim Grobe did at Wake Forest, but then take it to the next level from the breakthrough years to start pulling in Top 25 recruiting classes that also fit the culture & systems. I believe we are recruiting well enough to build depth, eventually rely on seniors, have quality players all over the field, mix in some true plus athletes at some positions, and let that carry us to the top third of the Pac-12 within 4 or 5 years. But with that said, talent wins most games. And just like Tad has done in basketball, for this to get back to what CU football is supposed to be and historically has been, HCMM has got to show that not only can he break through with a lineup that has some holes, but that he can also increase recruiting every year so that the athletes are better and more college-ready every single year. He also has to show that he'll find guys to plug holes in the short-term (like Tad did with guys like Carlon Brown) as the young, late bloomer talent develops.

P.S. Speaking of hoops, consider a guy like Chris Jenkins. Incredibly skinny as a true frosh. Needed to mature and hit the weight room. Needed to find his natural position on the court after sometimes having to play center for a small high school despite being a jump shooter. But he's a gifted athlete who can shoot the rock. He may not get a lot of minutes and may be very inconsistent his RS-Freshman season this year. However, he's also the type of guy who has the upside to go from that to an all-conference type performer as a 4th year junior and 5th year senior. That is what HCMM is currently filling the class with for football imho.

We're following pretty much the only blueprint we can in my opinion. The recruiting is less than stellar, but how can we expect much else at this point. I'd personally be fairly happy if we closed out with the names mentioned by the OP. Will it close the gap with the rest of the PAC-12? Probably not, this is going to be a long run type thing. Aim for a bowl in 2-3 years and try to build from there. I actually think MM will make some changes this offseason and rework the coaching staff a bit. I doubt we'll be able to attract a nationally renowned recruiter, but we can do better and MM strikes me as someone who will make better professional decisions than our coaches of the past.

Honestly, I can't answer if you actually believe your first sentence is true.

This response is either a cop out or you are missing my point. I am in no way stating that we have a top-notch recruiting class that will propel us to the top of the Pac-12, I was asking you a valid and direct question. If you, and others, believe that this staff is dropping the ball during this recruiting cycle, then please provide a list of elite level recruits that CU has a legitimate shot at. If, as you say, we need to hire a big time recruiter I would like some insight as to what this hired gun would offer recruits to lure them in to our program, and why it would be such a drastic difference from our current recruiters. Basically, I am just asking that those who are being critical of this staff's recruiting ability provide some backbone to their arguments.

My opinion is that those who are bashing this recruiting class are just misplacing their angst about the current state of Buffs football. Does it suck that 4* and 5* athletes pass us by, only to sign with other schools in our conference, of course. But such is the way when you have been as god-awful as our Buffs have been for the better part of a decade. As Buffnik pointed out, we need to gain some traction and start moving forward before we can set out sights on elite level recruits, much the way our basketball program has done. As success comes, expectations change, the same can be said for failure. The pendulum swings both ways.

So, to reiterate, will our class be ranked toward the bottom of the conference? - Certainly
Will we get some athletes that will help us crawl out of the hole we are in?- I have faith based on this staff's history (Gillam, Awuzie).
Could we have done much better this cycle?- Unfortunately, I don't believe so.

Basketball also got a little lucky with Alec Burks (turning into a monster between signing and showing up on campus). Helped propel the whole thing in a new direction, and as Nik wrote Tad capitalized on the success and kept increasing the talent. If we could get a little lucky with a QB it could really propel us in a new direction.

HKY great 2nd post I have the same question and would really love to know the answer. Maybe I would look at it differently because I struggle with being patient if there really is a cure for CU football that would help us faster.

People aren't disappointed that we aren't getting 4*'s and 5*'s...people are disappointed because we aren't getting kids with PAC 12 offers and most are low 3*'s.

Sent from a red light

My thing is that the most questionable recruits we have are on Defense and that's where we need the most help, and right away.

This simply is not true.

Cade Apsay- We beat out AZ and Rich Rod
Eddy Lopez- Expecting a TX offer and has stated he will remain a Buff
Chance Waz- Getting run from Nebraska
Wantanabe, C. Shaver and Bennion - Beat out Utah
Rodriguez- Beat out AZ St., Illinois, and Kansas
I. Miller- Beat out Wash St. and Leech
Jase Franke- Had offers from Boise State and AZ
Dotson- AZ St. and Northwestern (who was ranked highly at the time)

I believe we are right where we could expect to be under the circumstances. Also, again please address the question. Who are we striking out on or overlooking that are top-tier recruits that want to come play here 'Tini?

Let me ask you this, what do you think of recruiting rankings?

In the interest of keeping it short, I will say that my opinion is that they get the story right 10-15% of the time, on both ends of the spectrum. Most recruits that are 5-star kids are ranked so justly, likewise with 2-star and below, but I believe many kids are given 3* mid-tier rankings simply because they are an unknown entity to the scouting services.
This is where having a solid plan on how you want to build your program (HCMM seems to put an emphasis on a blend of athleticism and acumen) and a staff that can properly evaluate talent based on your model, will really turn things around.

There are simply too many great athletes from schools all over the country to seriously believe that all of them have this magical number next to their name, and that number will accurately predict their future in football.

In an effort to get this back on track I don't think you can feel good about landing Sutton or Ihenacho. I don't know any more than any of you but I don't feel very good about the latest updates

I feel pretty good about landing Lee. Wondering if we could get his bro up here too. I heard about that USC offer and that got me wondering what position he plays and when he is hitting college.

If we can't land one those guys as safeties I hope we go with two more OL/DL types.

Serious question. Does CU B.Ball have any SF/PF tweener types who could walk on and play TE. We need a receiving TE in the worst way.

Wes Gordon would fit the mold. I have no idea if he has ever played football or would even want to.

Hey assholes quit trying to hurt the bball team so we can be slightly less ****ty in football.
