The Buffs lacrosse team (4-2) will face their toughest test of the season when they travel to Amherst, MA to take on #9 UMASS (6-0) at 2pm. Here is a preview of each team:
The Buffs are continuing to find success in their inaugural season. Colorado has now won three straight, with victories over Regis and Temple coming at home, and the Buffs’ first MPSF win happening at Fresno State. The Buffs took down the Bulldogs 12-6 for their fourth victory of the young season. The Buffs grabbed a 4-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game. Fresno State scored its first and only goal of the first half with 20:01 remaining before CU raced into the break on a 6-0 scoring run. CU took a 10-1 lead into halftime, but Fresno State opened the final period with four consecutive goals. CU finally got a chance to respond with Cali Castagnola scoring her fourth and Tori Link netting her second, which would be the Buffs’ final goal, with 13:21 remaining. Neither team would score for over 12 minutes, with the Bulldogs breaking the drought with 1:44 remaining, but CU had already solidified its victory.

UMass One Of The Top NCAA Teams Over Last Four Years
• With a record of 60-8, three Atlantic 10 Championships and three trips to the NCAA Tournament, UMass has been one of the top teams nationally over the last four years.
• The 60 wins are the third most for any team in the four year time span (including 2014). Maryland leads the nation in wins with a 70-7 record over that time span followed by Northwestern (65-9). UMass is tied with Florida (60-12) and ahead of Navy (59-11), North Carolina (54-13), and Syracuse (53-17).
• Statistically, UMass has ranked among the nation's elite in points, scoring offense and scoring defense. In 2013, UMass was 3rd in points (467), 5th in scoring offense (14.76) and 9th in scoring defense (8.24). UMass led the nation in points in 2012 (491), was 2nd in offense (15.81) and ranked 11th in scoring defense (9.0). The 2011 campaign ended with UMass ranked 7th nationally in points (388), 5th in scoring offense (14.65) and 10th in scoring defense (8.70).

There are live stats and video for the match. The stats are free, but the video is available for a fee from the Atlantic 10 website.

You know, I should be looking at this game and just hoping the Buffs don't lose by 20.

But with how well our team has played, there's actually a little hope creeping in that CU has a puncher's chance at an upset.

Amazing.

I kind of felt that every match I was hoping that we wouldn't lose by 20, but they've done great and now I don't know what to expect. I think that they could lose the rest of their games and the season would still be considered a success.

I'm a little late for the beginning, but it's not looking great for the Buffs. 21 minutes left in the first half and the Buffs are down 6-1. The Buffs lone goal was scored by Sarah Lautman, assisted by Katie Macleay.

GGGGGGGGGGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Buffs cut the lead down to 9-2 with a goal from Amelia Brown with 14:40 remaining

It's hard to tell from the live stats, but it looks like the Buffs have settled down a bit

With just over 7 minutes left in the 1st half, UMASS adds to their lead 10-2.

Cali Castagnola gets her first of the game to make it 15-3, but UMASS answers 16-3.

We knew this was a possibility playing an elite team. In context we are a team of mostly freshmen in our inaugeral season. These things will happen...

Absolutely. I'm surprised that it didn't happen sooner.

UMASS wins it 17-4. Buffs actually outshot UMASS 9-8 in the 2nd half after getting outshot 23-4 in the first. Not a bad result considering how young and new our team is and how good they are.

There was a running clock in the 2nd half (not sure if that's standard for WLAX or something that the coaches agreed on at halftime since it was already a blowout at that point), and UMass definitely let off the gas and let a lot of their bench play as well in the 2nd...that being said, I do see some potential here for the team...when they were able to get the ball into the UMass zone, they moved it around nicely and were able to get great looks at shots - the main problem was on the breakout, where UMass completely swarmed the ball carrier and we were often times not able to get the ball past midfield without being forced into a turnover...that inability to get the ball into the zone to begin with made it problematic for us to get scoring chances...

I figured that they probably let off the gas, but without video it's hard to tell. Either way, it's not a bad result considering that we're a brand new program.
