So we'll know in a couple weeks? Dempsey's logic is obvious, I just haven't always understood NBA GM's logic, so I still feel like anything's possible.

Dinwiddie will have to prove his health, no doubt. Few, if any, teams will think about taking a chance on a player who is a shell of what he once was. Especially when the player wasn't a lock to be a lottery pick.

But Dinwiddie won't get to prove it in workouts, and that's his biggest issue. If a player can't work out for scouts, coaches and general managers, there's no opportunity to make a good impression before the draft. Dinwiddie already entered this season needing to show the necessary growth in his game that would have made him a candidate to be a first-round pick.

Dempsey's logic seems sound to me. If he declares for the draft, I don't see Spencer going in the first round, for the reasons cited in the op-ed. At the start of the season his situation was to cement himself as a solid first rounder and move up towards being a lottery pick. At the moment, IMO his situation is that of being a mid-to-high second round pick and trying to move into the first round. You never know; it just takes one team to love you. But that's a pretty gamble.

If I were spencer, I'd want to throw this in dempsey's face after I got drafted in the first round this year.

Dinwiddie's "best shot" is being drafted by a good team late in the first round that has the luxury to ease him in slowly. So many Buff fans are clamoring for him to come back without using much understanding of when he tore his ACL and how long it takes before a player is fully back. If he came back, he might not be the same player until halfway through the P12 regular season. He might not be fully back until this time next year. No one knows. The odds of him being 100% by November/December are not high. We should all be hoping he gets taken in the 1st. It's best for him and the program.

I think the rational fans are hoping he is like Adrian Peterson.

Hopefully he's not taken by a horrible team who still decides to ease him in slowly, like what happened to Alec Burks. When he finally gets his minutes after years of waiting he proves he can go off for a lot of points but not a lot to show for it in terms of help around him winning games.

If he's drafted, even in the second round, wouldn't you expect the team that drafts him to bite the bullet and give him time to rehab on their dollar and under contract? BuffG has a good point. If he returns here and doesn't readily come back from the injury, he could hurt his chances.

I'm not so sure that Spencer "entered this season needing to show the necessary growth in his game that would have made him a candidate to be a first-round pick". He was a 1st round pick last year. This year was about getting into the Top 20 or even the Lottery. That mission wasn't accomplished. The question now becomes whether he can maintain last year's position in what is looking like a deeper draft.

This decision rests on a "potential" agreement between Spencer and one NBA club. If an agreement is reached, I/we will be thrilled for him! If there is not a current NBA home and he chooses to return to CU, I/we will be thrilled to have him back. This will work out for Spencer one way or the other. Good things come to good people and he is a good Egg!

I thought he didnt get told he was a first rounder last year, and that's why he came back?

This one's a tough call. I don't think he's going to get any better or worse draft positioning should he come back. The NBA 'potential' thing - which is, btw, ruining college ball and quite possibly a lot of young men's potential careers - doesn't really make a lot of sense to me, but I don't know if most scouts would count next year for or against Spencer due to the injury. They're going to look at last year and this year pre-injury and make judgements off of that, then take into account the time it takes to recover from an ACL.

Selfishly, I want him to return, just like I want all our guys to stay here and play as long as we could have them here. Thinking about what's best for Spencer though, I just don't see why he would return and try to avoid injury for a year that's not likely going to change his draft position much.

The NBA draft is much weaker next year which gives SD a very good shot to move up in the draft

I was under the impression that he was given a 2nd rd grade last year as well. I recall seeing Josh Scott teasing him for it on Twitter last summer. Could be wrong. Agree with Nik on everything else though--Dinwiddie was a firm 1st rd pick up until the injury.

If he comes back and he's 100% by January, 2015 then I'll be as excited as anyone, but I'm rooting for him to sneak into the 1st rd. Too many variables otherwise that could affect him and the team negatively.

He had a first round grade last year. He made a commitment to Coach Boyle to come back to CU to make a run for a special season, and they were well on their way to making it happen when he went down. As far as I'm concerned, he's the ultimate Buff.

He did things for this program not even billups did (though the lack of coaching is not Chauncey's fault)

I think Dempsey is right, The Mayor can't even work out at this point, the end of the 1st guys really need a solid pre-draft camp and games to solidify that 1st round guarantee. We all are loyal here, but lets be real this game is all about your legs, and though not what it was it's still an ACL. He is in a really bad spot here, glad its not me making the decision. He will not be 100% at the beginning of the season, college or NBA, If your a second rounder in the NBA and you cant practice, there is a #1 with guaranteed money in front of you. Now your off to the D-league, then all bets are off.

If spencer comes back, he has said he will play opening day. No one will be able to tell him he cant. He is already doing basketball activities and the only thing holding him back is the doctor wants him to hit the 12 week mark, which indicates a healing milestone (either 100% or 95% I can't remember). Spencer was up and shooting at 7 weeks. Has been increasing his jogging since 8 weeks. He is ahead of schedule and it appears will be making a full recovery. SD may not be able to do full NBA workouts, but I wouldn't want to be the one to tell him there is no way. Scouts and GM's have enough tape on SD to evaluate him as a prospect. He just has to convince one of them that he will be able to come back better than ever. I honestly wouldn't put it past him to get that done. It just takes 1 GM to like him.

For those wondering the NBA time line looks like this: April 27th is the draft entry deadline, May 20th is the draft lottery, June 16th is the withdraw deadline, and June 26th is the NBA draft.

After the tournament loss he said he would be making a decision in the next couple of weeks.

I wish Dempsey was wrong, but he's not, and counting on 1 GM is a bad 30 to 1 bet, I just looked at 10 recently updated mock drafts, not 1 of them had Dinwiddie being taken in 2 rounds. GM's at the NBA levels job first and foremost, is to make sure they keep that high paying GM job. Selecting a guy that you can't see 100% at the Chicago pre-draft camp is a good way to get fired. Owners remember failures more then they do hits, or gambling and it turning out good. I think He would get drafted for sure, but mid 2nd is likely where he comes off the board.

Shouldn't he at least go through the process of interviews or whatever and just not hire an agent....he will never know for sure unless he does some kind of face to face contact with the NBA

We all want him back...we dream of what it will be like if he does come back...but he has got to test the waters IMO

JUST DON'T HIRE AN AGENT please

You don't really test the waters anymore by declaring and then removing your name. It's a very formal process around a NBA advisory committee, this is the same committee he went to last year and got a valuation in the 20's.

By April 3rd you have to apply to the NBA Undergraduate Advisory Committee
By April 6th the NBA Undergraduate Advisory Committee will have a response

This essentially gives him 9 days to make a decision by the NCAA deadline of April 15th.

Here's what makes up the committee:

To help with this process, the NBA is again offering underclassmen the ability to get actual feedback from a group of executives representing 20 NBA teams selected by the League Office, and chaired by NBA Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Stu Jackson, called the NBA Undergraduate Advisory Committee.

Did Voshon Lenard do it that way? I remember he never actually pulled his name out of the draft; he was in fact drafted. Then he doesn't like his draft position and returns to Minnesota for his senior year.

If you pass the withdraw deadline you are officially a pro in the NCAA eyes. Better go if you are drafted

Looks like Tyler Ennis, the PG from Syracuse just declared. Likely lottery pick, pushing Spencer down another pick.

Wikipedia confirms this. Guess the rules have changed. Thanks Voshon

Looking at twitter is kind of disappointing me as a fan with the mayor. I hate all of these people that message him saying "one more year" and "don't make a stupid decision." Let the kid make a choice and these morons are swaying him away. Just leave the guy alone.

I'm fine with "One more year!". We're Buffs fans. I certainly don't want to push him out the door. Hell, I've spent each night sacrificing a live animal, drenching my body in its blood, and dancing naked under the moonlight... and ever since Spencer's injury I've added to this ritual a little prayer that he returns to lead us to a Final Four & parlays it into a Lottery pick.
