The All-Time Starting Five for $15 Game: Colorado Basketball Edition

News Junkie
If you're anything close to a basketball fan, you've undoubtedly seen this photo that has been sweeping the internet over the last few weeks. The wizards over at BallIsLife.com came up with the perfect bar discussion game when they asked their readers to choose an All-Time NBA starting five from a pool of greats... only with one catch. Every player is tabbed with a particular value, $1-$5 within each position, and you're slapped with a draconian salary cap of only $15 with which to build your 'team.'

Overnight, the $15 game became an internet sensation, and the talk of the basketball world (outside, of course, that whole 'NBA Finals' thing).

It's simply brilliant. If given free reign over the pantheon of basketball's greats, anyone could piece together the best starting five by simply taking the best player at every position. The valuation and salary cap makes everything much more complicated. Do you sacrifice your shooting backcourt to lock down the paint? What sacrifice will you make to secure the services of the great Michael Jordan? Is Kareem really worth an extra buck over Bill Russell? The discussion points are endless.

(For the record, my $15 five looks like this: Stockton ($2), Jordan ($5), Pippen ($1), Duncan ($3), Shaq ($2), and a $2 well at the Dark Horse.)

Not content with just debating the merits of the best in NBA history, hardwood aficionados have taken the game and made it their own, applying it to individual teams across the playing spectrum. Given some prodding from the Mayor himself, I figure it's CU's turn, and have agonized over the history of our beloved program to set up the playing field. See below, pick your five, and hit me up in the comments or on Twitter (@Rumblinbuffalo) with your All-Time CU Starting Five for $15.

Chauncey $5
Boyce $2
Wilson $1
Meely $5
Wilke $1
Beau Gamble $0
Tad $4

Not thrilled about my center, but I had to have Tad.

Mayor - $3
Boyce - $2
Cope - $2
Vandiver - $4
Davis - $3 (Where is "House" Guest?!)

Leaves me $1 with the extra three to have Tad coach.

I'm not good at rules or math, fair warning.

Chauncey - $5
Mayor - $4 (HE CAN PLAY OFF THE BALL! - took a 1 dollar penalty for the position switch)
Dre - $3
Bob Doll - $1
Chuck - $2

The Mad Gamble as the walkon.

You know I gots to pick Frosty as the coach!

Tangent: I wish we would read that Chauncey is taking the Mayor under his wing or something. Do they even talk?

The Mayor doesn't play by the rules very well either

Well he is at 14 before Jelly. So I guess you consider him a walk on for the point of this exercise?? Leaves him 4 to pick Tad. I just can't get over the scenario of The Mayor feeding Burks on slashes over and over and over...

Gotta have Chauncey. Here's a fun lineup:

Chauncey
Mayor
Burks
Dre
Meely.

:nod:

Chauncey $5
Mayor $3
Cope $2
Dre $3
Chuck $2

Mayor & Dre are steals at $3. Should be $4

you gotta take a 1$ penalty per player for moving the positions. It's in the bylaws.

In that case,

Chauncey
Mayor
Wilson
Dre
Wilke

Any team w/o Chauncey is invalid. Mayor & Dre should be $4 players anyhow so im fine with the penalty

I assume I can take Josh Scott as my C at $1 (or anyone else who didn't make the list at that price)?

Nope. No current players are available per the great Rumblin's rules. However, apparently there is a bylaw wherein the Mayor gets to do what he wants.

I can live with that by-law. Not like any CU opponent ever stopped him from doing what he wants. :wink2:

If current players were allowed, Josh would either be a $4 center or a $3 PF (could be $4 when it's said & done) and Ski would be either a $2 PG or $1 SG (and possibly the biggest steal on the board).

Only people that ever stopped the Mayor were the guys in stripes (still mad about that Illini game) and the Mayor.

PG = $3 Spencer
SG = $5 Alec
SF = $1 Wilson
PF = $5 Meeley
C = $1 Wilke

That gives me 2 guys who can fill it up from the post, a great slasher, a great shooter, and a floor general who can score. I think I'm ok on rebounding and defense.

For the lesser known guys: Wilke is an absolute steal for a buck. High IQ player who was All-Big 8 and can give me 20 a night? I'll take that every day over a certain head case above him on the C list. And with those other guys on the court, the defense has to cheat off of someone. From this group, that guy would be Wilson and he'd rain 3s. I'd take him over Levis because he gives more height and I like having him, Alec and Spencer as the 3 guys handling the ball while also giving me 6'5" to 6'6" for the entire back court.

Honest to God, the main reason I didn't want Wilke on my team? His commentary on the radio. I swear to God, that almost caused me to go elsewhere.

You mean you're not supposed to be able to draw a charge while sliding underneath a player and from inside the under-basket circle? Who knew.

PG - Chauncey $5
SG - Boyce $2
SF - Copeland $2
PF - Pelle $2
C - Harrison $4

Coach - Boyle

Sorry Mayor, can't pass on Chauncey.

For that price I would have taken Jaquay Walls over Ski.

You can't have Boyle. You only get $3 to spend on your coach plus whatever you have left from your roster.

Suck it!

Rumblin's directions said pick a walk-on for free, or add $3 and pick a coach.
