Brooks: Miller Hopes To Make Sizeable Early Impact

Miller at 254?!? We are going to finally have a wall in the post.

Scott up to 245!!! If he can play the same at 250 he is going to really turn some heads this season from the Association.

Is it November yet?

Scott, Gordon and Miller. Those are three bad men. XJ isn't a slouch, either. I really like our frontcourt. I have to admit I'm really frightened by the prospect of playing without Jelly at some point, though. He's a special player. You don't just go out and replace a guy like that.

Miller is what we all hoped Damien Cain would be a couple years ago, a big freshman body able to give you a few minutes down-low without out getting exposed. If he can play 8/10 minutes a game, score on the occasional put-back, grab a few boards while spelling Scott/Wes I'll be ecstatic.

Miller is older than Cain was and has had two years both practicing daily with and regularly playing against high major D-1 prospects, thus his comment about the level of competition. Once in game shape, he should be on the floor an average at least 10 minutes a game and match Scott's RB stats as a frosh. Any "O" from him is a bonus and he just needs to be a rim protector on "D".

So you expect a guy that had to spend a year in prep school to match Scott's rebounding numbers his freshman year (btw, those rebounding numbers were as good as any freshman in the country)......makes sense

We need Gordon + Miller to average a double-double from the 4. Considering what we'll get from the other spots, that would be big numbers from that position.

As I read the article, Miller spent two years in prep school and it wasn't Little sisters of the Poor Academy, but a top-notch prep basketball power, playing against the likes of Andrew Wiggins and with guys who were Top 100 HS recruits. Taking that into account, I also think Miller has the background to match Scott's rebound numbers as a frosh.

Hopefully he will be a solid contributor in whatever time he gets....I think that there is less of a "need" for Miller this coming season than there is for Collier....but if Miller comes out and gives us a good 10 minutes a night inside to go with Scott on the blocks this team could have a scary 2nd 5

Start - Booker, Hopkins, XJ, Scott, Wes
Bench - Collier, XT, Fletcher, DThomas, Miller
Situational rotation - King, Stalzer

Crazy how this team could have so many looks next year

Imagine them going big with Collier, XJ, DT, Scott, Miller
Small with Booker, Collier, Fletcher, XJ and Scott

So many line-up possibilities

He graduated in 2013 and stayed an extra year trying to get better offers. Josh Scott was a top 100 player who started from day 1. Trying to compare the two isn't even reasonable.

If Miller plays more than 5 mpg this year it either means that he's WAY ahead of where he should be or we're battling injury issues. Tory's a matchup guy to give us bulk at times this year. A break glass in case of emergency guy. In 2 years, he's a starter. 3 - potential All-Pac-12.

I look at Miller like this:

-Immediately, he makes you better because he changes the culture of practice. The last two years, Scott and Gordon have been doing 1-on-1's with Ben Mills and Shane Harris-Tunks...and occasionally Andre Roberson, though he worked mostly with wings. Just like Gordon made Scott better in practice, Miller will help them both immediately.

-As we've seen, there will be games where Wes Gordon has his head up his arse mentally, and has either gotten in foul trouble or just isn't in it. Instead of having to go in small, or bring in Mills, Boyle can now go to Miller.

-I don't think you'll see him average more than four points per game. Gordon, at this point last year, was a better offensive threat because of his offensive rebounding, shooting and left hand hook. Make no mistake, Miller is not nearly as talented as Wes is.

-Rebounding will be interesting, but I'd say he averages 2-3 per game, mainly due to his playing time and the fact that he'll be playing alongside two of the best four rebounders in the conference.

I've still yet to see where the praise for Gordon comes from. Granted, part of his issues last year I'm sure were just youth and the fact that he's still raw, but he showed no touch, bad foot work, and little explosion to me last year. So if you're saying Miller is "not nearly as talented" as Wes, then IMO that means he's no good, or Wes played way below his abilities last year.

Little explosion? After the ankle, sure. Before that, he was one hell of an athletic shot blocker.

Also showed effectiveness on the offensive block and a pretty good shot from long range.

Of all players returning from last season, Gordon's upside is the highest.

ankle and concussion- he guarded everybody as well. Never in a million years did I think he would be able to guard Kyle Anderson.....did a great job on him. Wes' first 6/7 games were as good as any freshman CU has ever seen.

Reminds me of the JHop comments by someone about him not having any explosiveness

he's not near the defensive player. The offensive game that he showed, has a lot of room to grow. Should be a much more confident player next year.

His numbers weren't that far off where Andre Roberson was as a freshman (6.7 points, 7.8 boards, 1.1 blocks vs 5.9 point, 6.3 boards, 1.3 blocks). Granted he had a redshirt season, which helped in his development but those are good numbers for a freshman imo. Would like to see him give CU around 9 points/7 boards/1.5 blocks next year.

Anyone else think we should pull a Julius Thomas type thing and bring Tory on over to be the tight end this year lol

Could not disagree more. Wes played very well in my opinion. There were some games where teams could not keep him off the glass. He is not a jump out of the gym guy but consistently put himself in position to grab the offensive rebound. I have very high hopes for Wes down low this year after what I saw last year.

Anyone who thinks Wes had a bad year last year had unrealistic expectations. Period. Arguably our best defender (maybe Spencer beats him out pre-injury) and a phenomenal rebounder who did all of the dirty work to keep Jelly clean.

Wes was fantastic last year. I'm not the most schooled of basketball guys, but I know a solid player when I see one. Wes Gordon was a very solid contributor for this team.

I was and continue to be a big fan of Wes Gordon. He his a force inside blocking shots and on the board. Last year was I believe his first full year and I think he will only get better as time goes on. He, Scott and Miller, if he is able to have the impact he wants will help give us a very formidable front court.

My issues with Wes were all on the offensive end of the court FWIW. Plus he's got to get his head in every game going forward.

my issue with wes was that the poor guy seemed to have the worst luck. Falls on ice, sprains ankle. etc, etc.
That, and that he would get in his own head too often and he didnt think he belonged. If you're looking for an example, the game @WASH is a great one. I think he had 11 pts total, and 9 in the first half.
