Pitino blasts Nike & recruiting influence of shoe companies

Sorry Nik - shoe companies have nothing to do with it, the allbuffs mob told me so.

It's funny that a close friend of John Calipari's takes issue with the shady business side of college hoops recruiting, and even funnier that the person is Rick Pitino.

Sorry if I don't shed a tear for the trouble Rick Pitino has recruiting basketball players.

Yeah because it has never affected us and isn't a larger problem.

If Nick Saban makes a point about football recruiting, it may be valid. That doesn't make me any more likely to sympathize with him.

How about if we were ruled out of the running on a 4* or 5* prospect because he moved from Nike to Adidas would that piss you off?

Try looking beyond your own bias against him or saban or who ever, what Pitino is talking about has implications for us if we want to be big-time. If we want to play games for the pageantry of college sports, the crowds, the cheerleaders, the purity of sports then sure, discount Rick Pitnio. However if we want to be the team half our fans already think we are with a rightful place in the top 3rd of the pac-12 and a perennial ranked squad then what he said matter and it will screw us sooner or later.

sacky is a short-term thinker. give him a break.

To put this in football terms right now we are the 8-4 team that flirts with the top-25 and goes to a decent but not notable bowl. If we want to get beyond that it means getting dirty with the big kids.

It's a little disingenuous for Pitino to gripe about not getting any recruit he wants. That's all.

Why? It's not like he's pulling much elite talent. And with the record he has had, every living room would (and should) be open to him... if the game wasn't rigged.

I'm glad he spoke out.

The bold is actually a damn good point. They're consistently around #10 in the rankings, which is damn good until you realize that they're also consistently a final 4 team. He's getting more from the team than he should honestly.

As coaches, I actually respect the hell out of both Pitino and Cal. They're fantastic. As humans.... I respect them as coaches.

I'm glad to see him complaining, but I don't see how this problem gets solved. The NCAA sure isn't going to do anything about it. I don't see any catalyst for change.

Didn't he have an entire team of 5* freshmen one-and-dones that won the national championship a couple years ago? Sounds pretty elite to me.

Oh. Well. OK then.

This is much more than a particular program having access to some recruits and not others based on what corporation is or is not sponsoring a particular club. It's also about limiting the choices of a student-athlete. Yes, I know that many of the elite players are going to be thinking that one year of college and then they are in the NBA. But it's still not ethical. And with the majority of college players they'll never have a whiff of the NBA or that type of instant wealth, so they need to be considering the long term when they make their decision.

It's interesting that there is a degree of professionalization allowed with club teams (they basically are being sponsored by a corporation that hopes some day that a few of their players will be good enough to sign a contract), yet the NCAA, colleges, etc., have no control or say in the matter.

I'm not up to date on the legal aspects of the "one and done," as in how can the NBA state that a year of college is needed before players are eligible for employment when there is no evidence that a college education is needed to be successful in the NBA? This seems to be a factor in this issue.

If the NBA were to follow say the example of MLB or professional soccer they would be finding some prospects in HS and signing them when they graduate or even earlier.

This is different from how it is in football now?
