WR's and QB's reportedly looking better

Well the reports from spring practices have been night and day different this year compared to last so far with both the QB and WR play. Also more of the players seem to be buying into the system than last year. It sounds like it will be bewteen Cody Hawkins and Nick Nelson for the startin QB job next fall. Stats from recent scrimmage

Hawkins: 5 of 7 for 105 yards for 71.4%, 0 TD's, sacked 0 times, long of 49 yards.

Nelson: 3 of 7 for 51 yards for 42.9%, 1 TD, sacked 2 times, long of 30 yards.

Jackson: 1 of 1 for 100%, 0 TD, sacked 0 times, long of 8 yards.

I hope they are buying into the system:lol: In the BDC today they said pretty much that Bjax wouldn't be the starting QB next year. So its down to Little Hawk and Nelson. And the WR's havn't shown much of anything so far in spring ball.

Scout said the WR's have looked good with the improved QB play.

There is only one way to go:lol: Don't be suprised when Simas and Celestine become the starters.

Patrick Williams- does well at practice but he never has been able to translate that into game time. He makes huge catches but seems to struggle with routine catches.

Dusty Sprague- Decent reciever who shouldn't be starting at CU. Don't get me wrong I like Dusty. He's a hard worker. And makes things happen, but like I said. He shouldnt' be starting.

Alvin Barnett- When is he going to step up? He saw a good amount of PT last year but never stood out imo.

Cody Crawford- See Dusty Sprague.

Cha'ppelle Brown- Who knows? It's his first year at the position.

Jarrell Yates- I noticed he got hurt(minor injury) at the scrimmage. That's the only time I noticed him all spring.

Scotty McKnight- He's also hurt. The staff loves him. But I haven't seen anything from him.

Cameron Ham- Never heard of him.

Not to be all harsh on BJax but he was not exactly a QB he was a slash playing QB and that is not exactly a indictment on the abilities of the wide outs last year.

Dude, I know and I'm not arguing that they're suddenly world beaters. I just found it interesting that with better QB play, the WR's look better too. I am excited to see the three stud freshman WR's that will get here this summer.

EDIT: My point is, our QB play was ****ty last year resulting in poor play from the wideouts. Now we should have improved QB play wich results in improved WR play.

I agree that Bjax was/is not a thrower but I lost count how many times the ball hit our receivers in the hands and they dropped them. Not poorly placed passes either, but accurate and well timed passes that just bounced off the stumps our WR's call hands. If the ball is thrown accurately it shouldn't matter if Bjax threw it or my grandma (yeah, I know pretty much the same thing) any WR worth his salt should be able to catch it.

From the video I saw it looks like the WRs still have a long way to go. I expect another year with our TE's being our leading receivers (Geer, DeVree, Devenny all seem to have very good hands compared to the WRs). My hope is that toward the end of the season one or two of the freshmen will start clicking and we will see a shift to a more wide open offense.

Hey - I am just sold on improvement in the fact that we actually scored during the scrimmage on Saturday. The Spring and Fall practices didn't produce much success to speak of.

To make the point, I still think our WRs had a LOT to do with our loss to MSU and Cox's benching. They dropped at least two TDs that I can think of off the top of my head, and dropped a few other very catchable balls in that game. So, it wasn't just a BJax problem.

It ain't gonna mean **** if our line doesn't protect and open some holes for the RB's. If we can generate 175+ ypg on the ground, the passing game will improve by osmosis.

Exactly. It all starts up front. We have to give our QB some time to let the routes develop a little. And with no running game our passing game will suffer. I am not trying to come at you UH. But from what I've seen at the practices the WR's aren't really showing me anything. But your right about the QB's, they are looking pretty good.

If Bjax is the starting QB next year, we are in deep **** again!

If you read between the lines in this article it says the Bjax is out of the race for Qb. I expect that they will bring him in for trick plays etc. but his days of leading the offense are done (unless both Nelson and lil-Hawk get hurt --- God help us!!).

Bjax

I've always liked Bernard. He worked hard last year. His downfall imo was his lack of, or failure to grasp the playbook. I think Hawk only got to install 15% of his playbook because of that. But it wasn't completely his fault. The line played like ****. And what can you do with a weak oline? No running game means no passing game most of the time. Now in all fairness the running game wasn't that bad last year, but it wasn't exactly stellar. It's easy to put all the blame on Bjax. But I won't do that.

The last two national champs featured in one way or another mobile athletic quarterbacks, I remember a sophomore a few years back who some experts believed couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with a football, his name, Vince Young who not only produced one of the finest individual performances I have ever seen in the '06 Rose Bowl but also was named NFL Rookie of the Year. Now before I get blasted I am not trying to compare Jackson to Young but at the same time I love the extra dimension he brings to the table like Young did at Texas.

I agree. Mobile quarterbacks are great, if they can thow a football (that is the primary purpose of the position).

Bjax gave it all he had, he left nothing on the field. He's not a quarterback to begin with, he was a converted running back. I'm not putting all the blame on him for last year. This team still has alot of holes to be filled - remember Bill McCartney said it would take 3 years minimum to get this program turned around. You don't see anybody going after GB, he left the program in a ditch.
