Dustin Thomas Looks To Have Found His Stroke

The last 2 games have been very good for the sophomore. I think he had 15 against UCLA and then today he like 17 with three straight 3s in the second half. Looked much more comfortable and natural on the floor. I am excited to see his growth and where he takes this over the season. I have been waiting for him to settle down as I think he has a very high ceiling.

The reason he was recruited out of highschool is because he was a shooter. I think the jump in competition surprised him and his confidence suffered. He is slowly regaining it and that could be huge for us down the stretch.

J-Hop has improved and so has DT. Next is Fletcher.

He had 3 against UCLA but he did look good today.

The way he looked today is what everyone on the team talks about him doing during practices. He just finally showed it on game day. Hope he keeps it up because that would be huge if we could get production like that from him! He is that other outside scorer we need to open up that middle for Scott and Gordon!

He's also been pretty tough on the boards. And occasionally a mean defender on the inside. Which comes with fouls, but he hates to back down and I love that

Agree as he has been good on the boards and defensive side. His offense is what I was waiting for this year. As Shlder said, he was known as a shooter coming out of high school and his stroke looked better today with him stepping confidently into his shots.

Mis read the UCLA line if he only had 3, thought he was more effective than that. Either way, I am a big fan and looking for him to keep getting better now that he is getting some confidence.

He looked good today, but im curious to see what he'll do during the next 3 games. competition will be greatly increased.

This afternoon he was very confident, as were most of his teammates. All of his shots from the perimeter were taken in rhythm and in the context of the offense. We've seen him get open looks before and struggle to hit them consistently.

Don't want to get too carried away after just 1 game, but this needs to be DT's confidence booster. Doesn't have to give us 17 every night but we need sophomores scoring. He uncharacteristically fell asleep on D for a bit in the first half. Other than that he was terrific. Great performance

it was nice to see him playing on the perimeter more at the three and as a small ball four patrolling the three point line instead of trying to bang inside, which is simply not him.

That's what he was recruited to do. He's supposed to be able to play the high post against zone, be a stretch-4 most of the time, and be the center court outlet guy on press break. I actually think the array of moves he's shown from the block was a pleasant surprise to Tad while at the same time Dustin hadn't been giving much of what he'd primarily been recruited for.

Obviously he was used down low because we didn't have another big, I always thought it was a bit unfair to him to have the majority of his minutes come at the 4/5, simply not his game. He's a wing first and foremost.

He could also flourish in lineups with Scott down low as a small ball pick and pop 4 IMO.

Funny/weird thing. Dustin had his worst and best games of the year back to back. 39 against UCLA. 193 (!!) against USC.

(I'm throwing out the Wyoming game rating)

More funny: he started off the year 0-6 from 3. He made his first one against Hawaii. He's now shooting 40% from 3. (small sample sizes FTW!)

Against UCLA, I was really happy with how he played. Your point stands, but I just wanted to make another one. What we needed from him that night was to contain Looney so that Wes would be free to do his thing as a help defender (UCLA offense wasn't going to go through Parker/Welsh). Looney had only 6 points and 8 rebounds. Dustin gets a lot of that credit.

I agree actually. I thought he was fine against UCLA - had some shots just barely roll out. And he did his job, which is hard to measure in numbers sometimes.

It's so hard to see the impact guys made in a college box score a lot of times, especially when comparing it to an NBA box score. Not sure how many possessions per game college teams average, but my instinct says its about half of what an NBA team averages, which is usually somewhere around 100.

I was surprised to learn that Looney is considered a lottery pick, because he was invisible for UCLA. That was a huge defense performance for Dustin.
