A great race by Jenny! She kicked butt, and avenged her bad lap count race from last year. A U.S. indoor record by 5 seconds!!! She ran a 9:18.35!

Emma Coburn didn't have the best race earlier in the day, but she did finish 3rd in her race, and was a PR in the 2k. Way to represent, ladies!

An argument can be made that Simpson and Coburn are CU's best active athlete alumni. Yes, Nate Soldier, who won a Super Bowl, belongs in that conversation.

Congrats to Ms. Simpson for the record!

Re Ms. Coburn- she just keeps improving after never having the elite speed that Ms. Simpson has (still more a steeplechase specialist), but seems to be getting better race to race with the speed (a 6 second PR like today is pretty impressive). Today, she only lost to a young phenom who will probably be an Olympic favorite and today ran the 6th fastest indoor time at the distance in history, and then just got passed late in the race by the woman who beat Ms. Simpson in this meet last year.

Looking good for both to have great years, hopefully leading up to great results at the world championships in China in their specialties.

What kind of money does somebody make on the professional running circuit? It would seem to me that those two have reached elite status.

Was curious as well and found this running mb on google; this is Coburn's New Balance contract according to them:

$85k/yr (without incentives) for 2013-2016. Close to a $500k package, potential for much more with ARperformancebonuses and WC Medals. Big pay-off is Rio incentive clause.

Good money can be made on the Diamond League circuit during the outdoor season. Athletes can win up to $10,000 per event per meet, plus a bonus at the end depending on the standings at the end of the series. Jenny won the 1500 m for the year last year, so I think she earned another $40,000 for that as well.

Basically, the elite athletes can make a good living doing what they love. The semi-elite athletes can scrape by a living doing what they love. The really good athletes need other jobs to keep doing what they love.

Sounds like it was her best race

I hear what you are saying though, Emma having dominated so strongly, you do not think of 3rd as a good race. 2k is far from her specialty, though - good primer for working on the speed discussed here as well.
