'14 CA QB Cade Apsay (Signed to COLORADO)

Why don't we just ditch the S&C program since it doesn't seem to matter if players get smaller.

You completely dodged the point. How is a kid who is 6'2" 190 lbs not physically ready to compete for the #2 QB job, but a kid who's 6'1" 195 lbs is?

You're putting a whole lot of weight (no pun intended) into a kid being 5 lbs lighter than when he arrived (if that's even the case) and completely glossing over much more important factors that would determine if he was truly ready.

Does he understand the offense, have good decision making and can he make the throws? Would adding 5 lbs help him in any of those aspects?

In another thread, I saw that Marcus Mariota was a bit heavy for the combine. For grins, I looked up his Ht/Wt for when he signed with Oregon:

6'4" 185 lbs.

No wonder he was so lightly recruited. He was too skinny to notice!

I dodged the point because the discussion wasn't about his ****ing skill set or his football knowledge.

The discussion was simply about a guy who was skinny with undeveloped strength when he showed up at fall camp being even smaller when he showed up for spring practices.

Your post was a straw man.

I swear. Today we've got this going on while in another thread we've got people saying that team speed isn't important.

So what I'm hearing from CU fans is that size, strength and speed are all overrated in football. I guess we'll justify anything and everything while having the lowest possible standards.

Sorry, but it's completely unacceptable that a player regresses after a semester in the S&C program unless there's an injury or illness. I'm not going to defend, justify or re-direct the conversation when that's going on. It's a red flag. It needs to get fixed. If/when Cade reports for fall camp at 200 lbs with Forman tweeting about him being a big improver on his squat lifts, I'll also be the first to sing his praises.

Ok, fair enough. I apologize for shifting the conversation. I just think saying "he's not physically ready to compete for the #2 job" is fairly ridiculous and overblown, when you consider that the guy who holds that spot is an inch shorter and 5 lbs heavier.

And nobody said team speed didn't matter. Of course physical, god-given speed is important, but playing speed >>> track speed.

Cade is fine. Sometimes kids may get sick before Spring practice and lose all the work that one has done in the gym....

Injury or illness is a valid excuse. All I am saying is that failing that it shouldn't be excused if a guy isn't improving. If Cade made the gains and then lost weight on the flu diet, then those gains should come back to him pretty quickly. It's not lost, just misplaced.

Geez Holic, settle down. I was asking a question over something I found weird, not implying anything.

I'll imply/say bluntly what most are thinking, barring some sort of error in reporting or unknown illness this is not a good sign. An 18 or 19y/old male with nothing to do but study, watch film and practice has no excuse for not taking full advantage of the S&C program and bulking up. Unless an error or other hidden circumstance is at play here Apsay losing weight over the past 7 months is an issue.

When you are arguing exceptions with the resident sunshine pumper its probably time to look in the mirror.

At that age i went from 5'10 160 to 5'10" 175 working out 5 days a week and skiing north of 70 days my freshman year. Now granted I am counting until may but i've got less frame to hang weight on and no S&C coach on my ass.

Do we have any real comparison here? Lots of kids have their height/weight misrepresented in HS. Was our comparison based on a true freshman weigh in, or a high school weight?

I think you had to have seen Cade's picture on his OV last year to really understand that this is kind of a problem. I'm not going to say he's to blame or he's lazy or something, but that kid definitely needed to gain some serious weight. Hopefully it's just a reporting error or something, but it's hard to see this as anything but bad news.

I got a private message that Cade had worked hard and was up over 200 lbs before getting sick ahead of the semester and dropping about 15 lbs. Feel bad for the kid after all that hard work. I'm encouraged, though, that his reported weight is due to a circumstance and that he is taking care of doing the right things within what's in his control. Sounds like a player who will put in the work and improve.

That's a plus. I have high hopes for Cade.

Nik - the way you came after this I was sure you knew something about the kid being lazy or hanging out with Henington or something.... You usually are pretty careful of these things so I just figured you had a reason to be negative here.

That was the impression I had as well.

Seemed like many posters jumped to the conclusion that something was wrong with Cade's work ethic, not that something was wrong with Cade.

The bottom line is it is not acceptable for a guy, who is not overweight, to lose 5 lbs while redshirting. It makes me question his desire to play at this level. Are there guys who have played at his size? Of course, but it's worrying thst he couldn't at least maintain his starting weight.

Bet you lose 5 lbs. (and several IQ points) evey time you take a sh*t.

No. I wasn't even going after Cade, just the notion of excusing (absent any information) a guy not progressing in his development. I thought Duff got jumped on for raising a valid question.
