He ran 2:11:20, about 2 minutes behind the winner, to finish seventh. Looks like it was nasty weather.

I've run three marathons. And intuitively I know these guys will be way faster than I ever will but times in the low 2's just ****ing shock me. They're engaged in an entirely different sport than I am. My record is a respectable 3:38 and I know I was at the frayed end of my limits. I wore a pacing watch once and ran the fastest mile I ever ran at 5:43. I couldn't have done a second one and I'm pretty sure I was at the mechanical limits of my body, my legs just won't turn over faster than that.

2:11 is a 5:00 flat. 26.2 times in a row. It is beyond my pretty informed comprehension. Hats of to Dathan and all the runners of that type.

3:38 is respectable. It sort of sucks when you realize that training can only take you so far, natural talent is required to get below 3 hours.

3 hours is such a rough barrier. I have ran 3:04, 3:05, and 3:07. All three times I was right on pace to be sub 3:00 at least through mile 18 before fading.

We have some real runners on here. In my fastest marathon, I got beat by a lady pushing a baby jogger and a dude in a head to toe Kermit the frog suit.

PS - congrats Dathan!

My kid raced against Ritzenhein in the Foot Locker regionals. One of the worst days of my sports life. He never wore spikes in Colorado and the course the day before just seemed like a nice, dirt track. Unbeknowst to us, it'd turned to mush from the earlier races. He was wearing his cross country flats and was in the lead group heading to the trail. His first turn, his feet went out from under him and he was trampled by 15 or 20 runners. All that time and effort and, POOF, it was over. I still feel like a total idot to this day because I'm sure he'd have qualfied for Nationals.
