This is a thread topic that has been run a couple times, but the last time was 6 years ago. LINK

I'd go with the following:

1. Hagan (undefeated in Big 8 play puts him in a class of his own)
2. Kordell (best talent - he'd be amazing in today's zone read spread systems)
3. Anderson (before my time, but he was a special player)
4. Detmer (good teams, good record, talent to make the League)
5. Klatt (especially pre-injuries when he had the arm strength - held a team together through scandal to keep making bowl games)

Sefo's story isn't even half written, but I could see him moving onto this list.

This is really a list of one....Koy Detmer...

After all:
Boyd Dowler (56-58) Didn't have the stats, though he did take the team to previously unexplored heights
Gale Weidner (59-61) Ditto about stats despite having a good team
Joel Klatt - Solid teams around him, his pocket presence lead to his downfall.
Darian Hagan - A QB in name only, didn't throw enough to be called a QB.
Kordell Stewart - Couldn't throw an out route...not in practice, not in warm ups, not in a game and not in the pros. Either ended up in the dirt ten yards short of the WR or in the stands 10 yards over the WR head.
Anderson - Great football player, one of CU's best ever, not a great QB, thus why he became an RB his senior year.

Bottom line here is that no one is going to mistake CU as having produced even an average grouping of good college quarterbacks and thus CU's top five is a list of one.

Klatt over Aunese? That's a negative.

What was Klatt's biggest win? CSU?

Oh, and Pasevento should be in there cause 62-36. I don't care how the rest of his games went.

I'd probably go with the 2-game stretch at the end of 2004. The 60+ yard td in the final seconds against Kansas State to win the game followed by the win at Nebraska the next week to end the season.

Welcome to the board!

He's already 6th in yards, 4th in TD's, and 1st in Comp%. I think you could make a good argument to put him in the list now.

No way IMO. Hasn't won enough and plays in a different era than every other QB on that list.

I do think he will surpass Klatt by time he's done here though.

It's a different time than when those other guys played. Cody Hawkins holds/held a number of those records as well... Sefo's also only won all of 4 games in his year and a half of starting experience.

Again, before Sefo's time at CU is done, he could very well play himself onto that list, but it would be premature at this point.

I'll go with:
1. Hagan
2. Anderson
3. Stewart
4. Detmer
5. Aunese

I do not see Sefo making this list, but he can still write a pretty good story over the next two years.

Hagan may not have thrown the ball a lot and nobody was ever going to mistake him for a pro style QB but he won, and won, and won.

It was a different era. He didn't have to read safeties in a deep zone but nobody in CU history was ever better at reading the DE or OLB on the option. He had a gift for holding onto the ball until the last moment drawing the D and then making a perfect pitch leaving his RB with the ball in perfect position to use the space that Hagan had created by his timing.

They weren't passes in the record book but DH also made a lot of pitches that were longer and more difficult that a lot of the 3 yard dumps that a guy like Cody threw to build up his stats. When he kept the ball he was amazing as well. The times he did throw he was highly effective. This one isn't close.

Kordell was the best pure talent, and would have been if you put him at most schools, big, strong, fast, and had a gun (although maybe more shotgun than sniper rifle.) You have to wonder how Kordell would have done had his entire career at CU been spent in either the Buffbone or in the pro set. Changing halfway through may it hard for him to ever completely develop in either one.

I was little when Anderson played but he was an amazing athlete, probably not an amazing QB but he had loads of talent around him and was able to use it.

Detmer and Klatt agree on both.

Might be worth remembering Ken Johnson who was the QB who beat out Anderson, led the Buffs to a couple excellent seasons in 71-72 and then had a solid career in Canada

I think Sefo will definitely end on that list. If he can overcome his turnovers and the team as a whole can win some games he will rise fairly high. Embree made a lot of mistakes in his two years as HC but Sefo certainly wasn't one of them. We are fortunate to have him.

hagan and kordell are pretty much consensus 1 and 2.

after that, you can make a case for all the guys discussed in this thread. i'm hoping sefo does make it into the top 5 because it would mean we've really rebounded.

Anderson to me is not in the QB discussion...great player but had his most success at RB. Ken Johnson is easily #3. I like Klatt but would not put him in the top 5. To me it is Hagan, Stewart, Johnson, Detmer, and Aunese. If you wanted the top 5 passing QBs the list would be different. But those guys could get you the wins. Sefo needs to take over games in crunch time in order to make the list. Hawkins has many records and would not make any list - your team could not win with him.

1) Hagan - so fun to watch, WON games.
2) Kordell - Dude was a stud / (only pitfall was nu)
3) Pesevento - QB when we won the Big 12 championship (should have been a starter).
4) Detmer - flat out won and had great timing on his throws
5) Klatt - class act that won, smart football player
Honorable mention - Charles Johnson - could always count on him to come in and play good clean football, won some big games for us.

So much bull**** about not winning with Cody. Cody could win 7-9 games if his O-line was a busted up 03 chevy cobalt

how does Freshman year cody fair in our offense compared to freshman sefo.
Cody is a far worse fit than Sefo. You know what happened after Cody's freshman year? Teams figured out he had an average arm and no mobility.

Both are bad fits. I don't get the Sefo love. The dude was young last year and things very well might improve with experience, but he didn't win and choked more than once in crucial situations and cost the team the win. A top 5 candidate? At this point, give me a break.

The defense and running game need to give him a chance. He wasn't clutch last year, but he wasn't exactly put in a great position and was relied on to conduct long drives which lead to a higher chance of a turnover happening.

Hagan &
Stewart
Consensus 1&2

Then
Anderson
Sal
Knapple
Bratton
Hatcher
Klatt
Vogel
Cody

You know what? Cody was a hell of a buff, he gave his all despite all of th nepotism etc. That kid bled Black & Gold.

Can't take Dex seriously when he has Cody on there and not Detmer. Detmer has to be top 5, probably top 3.

But if just naming names to name names Hessler and Mochetti didn't do half bad.
