DU´s Mahoney hired as new VB Coach

dude has a bachelors in psych and a doctorate of law --> sounds like the normal education path to coaching volleyball.

4 years head coach at DU and an assistant at CSU, including four as associate head coach.

I do hope the players stay and he can take the program to the top of the Pac 12.

Wish we would have pursued someone from a top team. This is the same hire as the last one, existing head coach from a lower level d1 program that got tourney invites through automatic bids. I wished we would have gone with someone that had connections to top tier talent.

This is strong evidence that RG believes that CU can build a championship contender in volleyball. Got a coach who is recruiting way above where he should be able to at DU (Top 20 class) and used one of the few multi-year contracts in order to get Mahoney here.

I hope so but I am concerned that the recruiting success at DU was due more to asst coach Tom Hogan than to HC Mahoney. Hogan used to be an asst at CU and was largely responsible for the last best CU recruits not named Simpson ... the class of Edelman, Austin etc. Since Hogan moved to DU, DU has actually had better recruiting classes than CU. Hogan is taking over as HC at DU I believe.

I'm also concerned that Mahoney has no experience in the top level of NCAA VB. The only reason DU got into the NCAA tourney these past 2 seasons was that DU got the automatic invite for winning their weaker conference. And his time as an asst at CSU was with a far stronger team than DU but again an automatic bid winner that has not done well when they faced top teams.

I hope he's up to the task. I'm taking a wait-and-see on this hire.

I do think it helps that he has a multi-year contract. Time will tell, but I hope it goes well.

Kritza had a multi-year contract when she was first hired also. It certainly helped for her with the huge re-build job she face. Fortunately, if no one leaves the current team and the current commits stay, Mahoney has a lot more to build on than Kritza did.

Please don't tell me we just hired Dan Hawkins ver. 2.0!!! We know what happened when Chris Peterson stayed behind to become the head coach of Boise St.

I know nothing about Mahoney's coaching or recruiting abilities, but even with the loss of Edelman and Austin CU should have enough talent to get an at large bid to the NCAA tourney. And yes, I felt they were hosed this season regardless of what the RPI indicated.

We cannot lose Gabby.

On the surface, this invites Mike Bohn jokes. I'll give it a chance since the message this is hopefully sending is in recruiting. Colorado club volleyball is something that needs to get locked down and CU should certainly be securing commitments of its in-state talent and not lose out on a local prospect especially to CSU or DU.

It would have been an opportunity to aggressively pursue a top recruiter from one of the nation's best programs looking to become a head coach but since CU has remained competitive in the Pac-12 in most non-revenue sports I'll trust in Rick until proven otherwise.

I agree except for one glaring issue. There is not a high level setter on this team right now. Gabby was recruited to take that spot, but she really hasn't shown she has what it takes in the chances she's had. In her few shots as a freshman I would bet 90% of her assists were to her sister who could adjust and get a good swing on just about any ball. Last year, when she set in the 6-2 the hitting efficiency was under 25%. I understand a lot goes into this beyond just the set, but it was 6 points lower than when Eddy was in rotation. This is going to be a huge issue on a team with no pure go to pin hitter.

Mahoney's press conference.

It sounds like we can look forward to a resumption of the CU vs CSU non-conference match-up. Also sounds like the 2 recruits who have signed for 2016 are still on board. re: staff ... sounds like JT Wenger will be moving on.

I agree with INTHABUFF ... the team needs a setter. Gabby has the tools to be a good setter, imo, if she focuses on that but she has developed into a really good RS hitter so she and the coaches will have to make some choices. Great opportunity for a good transfer setter if anyone knows one out there somewhere.
