Stanford Fires Dawkins

Dawkins is a good basketball mind who recruited very well and ran his program the right way. I have a ton of respect for him in a lot of ways.

Where I think he fell short is that he didn't coach toughness. His teams always seemed too soft. Strange for a Duke guy that his program didn't have much attitude or bring a little nasty, but it didn't.

Dawkins was a great assistant at Duke, solid player, and a steady coach. He didn't burn Stanford to the ground, didn't embarrass them, didn't leave the cupboard bare. I wonder what's next for him though, because Duke's staff is absolutely full. Maybe he gets on the staff at Marquette, NW, ASU, or Harvard...

I know there's no connection, but if I'm a young coach like Billups at DU, I'd extend an offer to Dawkins to both mentor and help build my program up. Guess Ricardo will have to do...

Sorry DyeMe, I'm a Duke fan as well (although not nearly to your level), but Dawkins has been a **** coach. He looks absolutely lost on X&O's out there. He's a good recruiter, but I honestly believe more of that is "Stanford" than "Dawkins". Great guy, was a phenomenal player, but should never have another head job ever again. I could see him being an assistant somewhere, but I want him nowhere near CU's staff.

Yeah I agree - they never looked impressive when I saw them play CU. However, do you really think he's a ****ty coach? I agree, not a great or good coach. However, I do think steady is a proper term for him (my personal definition of steady - play to be about .500). X's and O's...yeah, to prove your point, I don't recall anything outstanding while watching Stanford play CU. But, at the same time, I can't say they looked as bad as Ricardo Patton's teams on O, but again, this is without remembering any specific play from CU's games against them. Ricardo, if wasn't ok at recruiting, was to me the worst X's/O's coach. Harrington prior to him though was worse, because that dude couldn't recruit.

And I'm definitely not advocating him on CU's staff, although I wouldn't be extremely disappointed in that. I would prefer Tad get a stellar recruiter; a bit younger and more energetic. Dawkins will definitely get another assistant job, and in spite of what you think should happen, you probably would not be surprised if he got another HC job, which he probably will one day.

Oh, he'll DEFINITELY get another job because the only people less creative and willing to think outside the box than AD's are NBA GM's. I don't disagree with you there. But man, I just thought he was horrible. If Furd actually gets someone who could coach, they could be dangerous next year. There are some nice pieces (and they were really hurt by losing Cartwright in the preseason) so they could really rebound. But honestly, the fact that you compared him to Ricardo Patton just kind of proves the point that the man shouldn't be running a team.

I don't think Stanford's issues were system related. It was mostly a toughness issue. The only year they did anything with that talent was that 2013-14 team with Huestis being a great glue guy who brought a ton of toughness and scrappiness the other teams were missing. (Man do I wish that he had come to CU. Former Buff hoopster Poncho Hodges' son.)

It appears that Stephen F Austin coach Brad Underwood is headed for Okie St.

Big 12 arms race imminent. TCU is on the clock and KSU fan desperately wants Bruce Weber gone but so far no move there. You can bet other regional coaches Gregg Marshall and Ben Jacobson have some emails waiting for them.

Greg Marshall has turned down big programs already, doubt he would leave for TCU or KSU. He also makes $2M+ per year. Have heard that he loves WSU and his situation of being the big fish in the Valley's small pond.

It's sounding like Jamie Dixon will end up at TCU

This would be an interesting development. I think Jamie Dixon is a solid coach, but Pitt fans have probably gotten a little impatient over the last several years with respect to NCAA tournament results. While Pitt does have a decent bball tradition prior to Dixon, he definitely helped elevate the program a little, and his initial success probably raised the fans' expectations. Sort of reminds me of fans' complaints about Boyle, except Dixon walked into a better situation and has been at the program for a longer time. If Dixon leaves, who do they get, and how does the program do with the transition?

Marshall makes $3.3 million. Jacobson makes $1 million. Neither is leaving.

Doesn't Stanford have to call Eran Ganot from Hawaii after that run? Doesn't sound like he'd leave, but that guy can flat out coach. Very impressed with them this weekend.
