MBB open assistant spot

Given the misses in recruiting, I'm hoping we throw a ton of money at a big time recruiter. Who, where, when I have no idea.

Have to recruit better to make a jump offensively IMO. How is Grier on the trail?
Well it says he was Gonzaga's recruiting coordinator for a decade, and I would assume (?) this has something to do with Tad's connection to Mark Few so he probably knows quite a bit.

I know Rodney is untouchable here but this guy has a really good resume. I think Dom will benefit from a different voice. I like the hire on paper.

At a glance, I really like this hire. Of course, even if I look at it in more depth, I don't really know enough to say whether it is good or not.

Rodney is a good guy and got defended heavily in the coach A switch but not sure I'd call him untouchable, if i bit your head of re:Rodney at some point i owe you an apology for that.

Not loving it. His 1 good yr at San Diego was his 1st yr so the team wasn't his recruits. Then he mired in the muck for 7 seasons. San Diego went 52-39 for the 3 years prior to his hiring & 33-61 for the 3 yrs after his incredible 1st yr. Doesn't speak well to his recruiting ability that he couldn't build off of a WCC title & upset of UConn. Not going to hold OK state against him because Ford was already on the hot seat.

K.

Any time you can add a guy with 8 years of head coaching experience and 16 years as a recruiting coordinator, you do it. The guy was recruiting for Gonzaga as it was built into the national power that it now is.

This guy isn't our next HC, he is an assistant. A damn good hire for an assistant.

I'd agree with BuffG if this was for an HC hire or first assistant. This is a back of the bench hire, you take that resume, my concern if I were to have one would be that his resume is too similar to Kearney (sp?).

appears to be similar to Kearney but with more recruiting chops and more HC experience. Kearney was a HC for 1 year at Holy Cross. Otherwise was an assistant at ND.

This team is tantalizingly close to taking that next step. I hope this guy gets us there.

I thought I read he coached PGs at Gonzaga?
This is an area where we need to take a step up, so I'm hoping it helps.

I discussed this in Barzil, but there are hints of truth here. The win over UConn was with Holland, the previous coach's players. It never got put all together at USD. But he recruited some damn good players, including the schools all time leading scorer. I think he might be a guy who is a tremendous assistant, but just doesn't have that "it" to be a head man.

This is a poor argument. I wouldn't touch Billy Gillespie or Tim Floyd just because they have a ton of experience. Grier obviously was a part of building the Zags & that's his saving grace. Although, that work was 10-20 years ago & recruiting/winning in the WCC in '95-'07 is a lot different than recruiting/competing in the PAC-12 now. I don't love it.. I don't hate it.

1 thing that may have really derailed his time at USD was a serious point shaving scheme that seemed to have started before he got there. The school's all-time leading scorer got 6 months in prison
