Okay, I have to confess, I like Dan Hawkins. I think he's a great guy
and will probably do some great things at CU...although early signs
are highly negative.
Anyway, I have noticed that he likes to talk about himself a lot. So,
I have collected these quotes from him to let HIM answer the question:
"What kind of guy is Dan Hawkins?"
“I'm just one of those guys where I'm not into what you did yesterday
or what you did last week.”

“I'm a very philosophical guy.”

"I'm one of those quirky guys who is all about reinventing yourself. I
think there is magic and beauty in that.”

"I've never been a guy who is all about comfort and luxury. I'm a
blue-collar guy. I like it when you have to wake up and earn your
way."
http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_page=1200&u_sid=10109331
“I am very non-materialistic. I mean, I don't wear Gucci. As long as
my car starts and I can get where I need to go. . . . I'm a person
who's got my feelers out on life."

“I'm a principled guy…”

“I’m a blue-collar guy.”

"I'm just one of those guys who isn't and never have been into (depth
charts).”

“I'm more the philosopher. I don't have funny lines."

“I’m not one of those guys that says I expect to win this game or I
expect to win that game. I’ve never been one of those guys.”

“I’m into the whole team-building, and you could do a lot of awesome
things.”

I’m like a lot of coaches. I have a lot of corny saying, but one of
them is ‘there are two types of class, there’s first class and there’s
no class.’

"I have never ever been one of those guys who's about comfort and
luxury," Hawkins said. "I sort of like it when you have to wake up and
earn your way."
http://www.theindependent.com/stories/08222007/spo_spocolorado22.shtml
"I've always been about experiences and opportunities.”

I'm trying to be an example of, 'Do the unthinkable, everything's
possible, reinvent yourself by getting better.' It's all those
concepts."

"When I get mad, I talk like this,'' Hawkins said through clenched
teeth. "Seriously, I can not open my mouth.”
http://www.redraiders.com/stories/072607/foo_072607009.shtml
"I'm one of those guys who thinks we have to go to a bowl game,"
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/big12/colorado.htm
"I have never been one of these guys who has to have a logo on their
chest and 'oh, that means you are a better coach than someone else.'"
http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news?slug=dw-fn_2005_dan_hawkins&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
"Maybe I'm just old school.”
http://www.buffzone.com/news/2007/aug/10/hawkins-against-continued-text-ban/
“I’m always one of those guys [that say] ‘You’re never quite there,”
Hawkins said. “...But I think we are pointed in the right direction.”

And finally, my favorite quote from his last year at Boise State:
September, 2005
"People always say, why Boise?" Hawkins said. "I say, it has all the
earmarks. You look at Lincoln, Neb., look at some of those places.
Maybe I am supposed to be here for 30 years."
http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news?slug=dw-fn_2005_dan_hawkins&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
That 30 years turned into 4 months as Dan was hired by CU in December
of 2005. And here is what we now know of our Boulder Coaching Shaman:
Dan Hawkins is a genuine, down-to-earth, blue-collar,
non-materialistic, quirky, animated, passionate, old school,
principled philosopher who believes the team is “never quite there,”
doesn’t care about the logo on his chest, believes a bowl game is a
requirement, speaks through clenched teeth when he is angry, is
focused on the unthinkable, believes in being first class but is not
about comfort and luxury, has a lot of corny sayings, doesn’t expect
to win this game or that game, is focused on reinventing himself, is
into team building but not into depth charts, and might stay at Boise
State for 30 years.
And if you don’t believe it, just ask him. Who do YOU think Dan
Hawkins is?!
