CEC Improvements

Brian Howell's blog on Buffzone.com today reported that CU was installing new speakers at the CEC, as well as video boards above the court. Does this mean we're finally getting a jumbotron at the CEC? I'd heard that the roof couldn't support the weight of a jumbotron -- so I hope they've figured out a way to do this because it could really improve the gameday atrmosphere at the CEC. Does anyone have the scoop?

Please let it be true! Now, they just need to re-install beer taps at concessions(fate, avery...)

I knew we were getting the upgraded sound system this year, but I thought the video screens abovehead at centercourt were longer term.

RG said that we needed both so that we can fully monetize CEC by holding concerts there. Clearly, he's not kidding around.

With the structure question, it was assumed by many that the roof couldn't support it just based on what can be seen at CEC. As an engineer, I will be very interested to see what upgrades/retrofits they have to do for the roof structure, as well as the size of the video boards.

Would be a very very nice addition to CEC. I am so glad they are fixing the sound system though regardless. Now if they could just do the same at Folsom...

Also may have a lot to do with video monitors weighing a lot less than they used to. Going by what's been in my own home or homes of friends, I know that I can now easily lift and carry around 60" televisions or do a simple bracket mount of a tv with a screen of that size. In the past, tvs were damn heavy and a "big screen" either was on wheels or it wasn't going anywhere.

Yeah. The big screen tv's are a lot smaller than they used to be.

Whatever they are doing, it's not going to involve an extensive re-engineering of the roof, as there are no CEC related bid requests on the CU facilities website. That would seem to limit the scope of what improvements they would be making.

I walk by the CEC occasionally and recently have noticed some external Bose speakers by the entrances. Hopefully they aren't finished upgrading the sound.

So, it's just a sound system? No video boards? Lame. Can someone tweet at Woelk and confirm?

I asked Neil if the rumor about video upgrade was true and all he said was that they were replacing sound first. No center scoreboard can go in until/unless they remove that center stereo unit.

They may be planning on updating season ticket holders regarding improvements when renewals are sent later this month.

So I was tooling around on the internets, and found a couple of articles from 2012 that referenced the price for mid-court videoboard jumbotrons at about $5m. That was pretty cutting edge stuff (ie, Tampa Bay Lightning arena which had a massive jumbotron), and prices have come down on LEDs since then, so I bet we could get a good jumbotron for about $2.5-3m. Anyone want to pony up? I'll buy you a beer as a thank you.

Do you think they'd take an I.O.U. signed as Joey Freshwater?

That sounds like a wonderful system. Can't wait to hear the music kids are into these days!

The new Adele album seems popular.
Sounds like an ode to Barnett.
Hello, it's me
I was wondering if after all these years you'd like to meet
To go over everything
They say that time's supposed to heal ya
But I ain't done much healing

Darth, your lady is posting from your account again. :D

Good stuff with the sound system. For as much as Folsom needed/still needs upgrades, the Keg was even more lacking.

Can they get a similar deal to upgrade Folsom's ****ty sound??? Seems trivial, but good, crisp, bassy music being played before KOs and stoppages is important.
