More Sumler- less gimmicks

I like Demetrius Sumler. He's got some good stuff. Too bad we only gave him the ball 15 times. (He was averaging 5.5 yard per carry)

I could do without the strange gimmick plays. What was the purpose of the plays where Cody Hawkins went out wide? I didn't like those plays, because I have a hard time believing that any defense is going to take Cody Hawkins seriously as a wide receiver. Maybe if Jackson was the QB - that play would work - but I don't see it working with Cody.

All in all- its been a nice game for the offense. Unfortunately the defense still makes average QB's look like they are ready for the NFL. That is a bit disappointing.

Just reading the stats doesn't say too much but I'm glad they chose to get him (Sumler) involved right away. He is one of several reasons CU has a bright future to look forward to.

Glad to see Hawkins come out with a nice game. This will make defenses respect us more this year.

I'd like to hear from someone who was at the game on what their take on the defense was. It looks like Hanie picked up right where he left off last year and that is not good if that is the case.

I wish hawk would've trusted him more at the end of the fourth when it was third and 2-3? I thing they would've won the game there if they'd ran the ball. But who cares! we won!

sumler and hugh should really work well together this year....although my vote is for less gimmicks as well.

Yea, the direct snap to Sumler was nice but 4-5 times in the game is too many. Offense looked great, especially early on, but Cody was getting more pressure in the 2nd half. But overall I was really impressed with him, especially for his first college start. And just think, Hugh and Josh Smith didn't even play in this one. The D simply can't allow to imitate the Broncos and let QB's sit back there and have all day to throw. I really expected more out of this d-line.

At least we won, hell yea!!!!!!!!!

I was thinking that hawk was trying to set up the hb toss back to cody. Maybe. But they did run that play too much. It sucked losing hugh. he would've made a difference imo. The D line was really bad. no pressure and as usual we make hanie look like an all american. But i liked how collins adjusted and put more blitz packages in. it really affected hanie in the second half. The first half he killed us. keep in mind this was the first game. we will only get better.

it was really a classy move by hawk putting the seniors on the stage after the game.

The D was really unimpressive, but I guess we can take heart in that they looked worse last year against CSU. The offense was very impressive, and should shut up the nepotism argument with Cody at the helm. Overall I think we will do better than what the "experts" have us picked to do.

Go Buffs!

Sumler does look good and I agree, enough of the offensive gimmicks... The flea-flicker was a stupid call also at that time..

I thought the flea-flicker was a good call at the time, coming right off a 4th-down stop. CSU certainly wasn't fooled though, they had 2 guys back there. Plus Cody underthrew it.

Part of the problem was the OL couldn't block them.. Flea-flickers work if the OL and RB block the pass rush..

Little Hawk was getting pressured A LOT in the 2nd half.. Tough to see things down the field for a QB if he has opposing players dropping him after every pass..

True, Hawkins was getting alot of pressure in the 2nd half including that play, but regardless the receiver was well-covered. Gotta credit CSU for not getting burned on that. How often do you see that type of play and a receiver is wide open......

Cody underthrew it because there was a CSU guy that was already past the RB that tossed the ball to him before the RB could turn around and block him. SO he had to dump it quick. But yes, I would like less gimicks, but then again, Boise beat OU with those gimicks, and gimicks with a higher claiber of players---might work well with more practice.

Don't count on seeing any fewer "gimmick" plays. Hawkins likes a VERY deep playbook and loves the unusual stuff. My guess is we won't see those same gimmick plays again for several games. Sure, we'll see the same gimmick formations & movement, but something different will be run. I like that we're seeing some imagination on offense; something we've not seen since Detmer was QB.

any word on hugh?

i think he would have had a huge day had he been able to go. such a shame... their d looked suspect to me off the edge and with hugh's speed... wow, he could have had a big freaking day.

i hope he gets well.

Agree, Sumler, Lil' Hawk, and the O looked good. The d scares me, but we got the W! I'd like to see them grind it out more with the run game. Good win tho, lets take down the Devils next!

The defense was pretty good I thought except for two things. First, no one could ****ing cover the tight end. Sperry killed us. Second, there was some poor tackling by the DL and LBs at the point of attack. There were a lot of plays that should have been 1-3 yarders that turned into 7-10 yarders because someone (or like that play with Hanie where he broke out of the pocket...five people) missed a tackle in the backfield or LOS.

The gimmick play was interesting. It basically said we want to play you 10 on 10. It takes one of the LBs or safeties out of the play because they can't leave Cody uncovered. It worked pretty well, I thought. It was good for 4-8 yards for the most part. It seems like they can work in some wrinkles to that formation later in the season. I think Hugh was probably supposed to be back there for some of those plays and then the D would have to worry about Sumler up the middle or Hugh to the edge. Get them thinking about that, and then you're ready to throw in a potential pass out to Cody or something. We'll see.

Hopefully what we are looking at here is just first game rust because this isn't a characteristic we usually see up front for the Buffs.

The Sperry problem is a bigger worry to me. We will face some talented tight ends this year and they will pick on this to see if it is a serious weakness.

Thanks Wispy, nothing like an at the game report

It could have been worse, there were two other plays (at least) where Sperry was wide open and Hainey just missed him. That guy is a beast, but we just couldn't find anyone to stay with him.

:yeahthat:

I really liked that play the first time they ran it. The second and third I couldn't figure it out, and by the fourth or fifth I became pretty convinced that there are wrinkles they will run off of it. My first guess was that Sumler can throw the ball - but we didn't see that today if he can. My second guess is that it was put in the playbook to set up some wrinkles with either BJax (if he ever plays again) or Hugh running the play. I seem to remember Hugh running a couple halfback options in his career. That play might be effective once a game on its own, but with a pass option, it gains a whole new dimension.

I agree to point. Although I am not disappointed. Team played about like I expected. Much better on offense this year and about the same on D. I DO NOT LIKE OUR DEFENSIVE SYSTEM. I hate our 3rd and long D. I hated it last year when the pulled the linebacks back to the first down marker and dared them to throw underneath. I just doesn't work. What I really don't understand is we are SO aggressive on offense and not afraid to take our shots, yet on D, when we have a team in 3rd and long, we play a psuedo prevent D instead of just pinning back our ears and getting after them. I am willing to give it some more time, but if I am still seeing the same results at the end of this year, I will be hoping for changes on the D side of things.

I would also like to see a few less gimicks on O, but I knew that was what you would get with Hawkins when we hired him. I am hoping over time some of that will go away as our talent level increases and we can just rely on straight man on man ball. When Stoops took over at OU his first few years he ran alot more gimick type plays, but as his talent level increased he started to get away from some of it.

All that said. What a great college game. Couldn't ask for a closer matched game and exciting finish.

I think Helfrich called a lot of gimmicks to try and keep the defense on their heals. Our offensive line got burned a few times and our running game was so so. Against a top 25 defense I don't think we would have faired as well. FSU will probably show us a lot. That said we are nicely paving the way for a bright future.
