Arriving early at the game

With all this talk about how Mike Bohn and Dave Plati would rather the emphasis be on people getting to their seats early, I have to question whether they have taken a good look at the reason behind the late arrivals.

Bring back beer sales, my friends. Then all these issues will be resolved. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out that people are staying in the parking lots until the last minute so they can "get their drink on". It's clear that the original purpose of stopping the beer sales - curbing alcohol consumption - has not had the intended effect.

I know it's a pipe dream, because they'd have to admit they were wrong in the first place by banning beer sales. It would be nice if for once they would realize the error of their ways and correct the mistake.

That's pretty weak.

Are people staying in the parking lots at OU/OSU/etc. before their games? No. And they don't sell alcohol at those stadiums, either.

Or just let everybody bring in containers of any kind. I remember back in the day (my Freshman year) we could carry in gallon jugs of booze. We always showed up at Folsom at least an hour before kickoff. Can't say we remembered too much of the games, but we were there early.

Weak or not, it's reality.

Semantics.

If they want a solution, this is it. Or they can piss and moan about the problem and not do anything to solve it.

Their choice.

How is it the University's choice as to what time a fan decides to walk into the football stadium?? Sounds like it is the fan's choice.

Sure, CU could do a lot of things to get fans inside the stadium-- they could have free porn playing on the big screen -- in the end, it is still the fan's choice as to what time he or she enters the stadium.

CU has already gotten their money, whether you show up to the game an hour ahead of kickoff, or after halftime.

Point being what, we are the worst fans in America?:sleep:

It's CU's choice as to how to deal with the problem. They can A) whine, piss, moan, cajole, and otherwise plead with people to show up early or B) address the issue to why people show up late in the first place and do something about it. That is their choice. Putting porn on the screen won't do anything and you know it. That's a poor example. But one thing they could do is have pre-game activities inside the stadium. They did this when I was there. There would be a guy with a microphone on the field getting the student section all riled up. If they had some give-aways INSIDE the stadium that might help, too.

Yes, CU already has their money regardless of what time people show up. But that's not the issue here. Bohn has said publicly that he wishes people would show up earlier. An early crowd enhances the atmosphere and helps sell the program.

The answer is to start winning consistently again. Right now there are always empty seats and no real urgency about getting to the game. If they start winning, people will start buying more tickets. It will feel like a "hot item" again and people will want to be inside the stadium to experience it...beer, porn, or not.

I agree. When we win consistently, the students, who have general admission tickets, will be forced to show up early to get a good seat and on some occassions any seat at all...this was certainly the case in the early 90's...you had to show up at least 30 mins early to even get a seat worth standing in...those where the days...

Other options:

1) Make the whole stadium luxury boxes. Don't they cater with beer and all you can eat peel 'n' eat shrimp anyway to all of the lords of CU football? If the whole stadium were luxury boxes, it's win-win. Sacky - get thee to a luxury box.

2) Put up aluminum siding on all of CU's buildings and rip out the grass. Make the campus look as bad or worse than the CSU, OSU or K-State. That way, there'll be less incentive to loiter around all of that beautiful architecture.

3) Move the stadium miles away from the center of campus. (Like Baylor or ISU) That way, when you are there, you're there. What else are you going to do?

4) Widen Highway 36 to an 8-lane superhighway and build a 7-thousand space parking garage at the NW corner of Coloardo Ave and Folsom Street.

At the end of the day, if you aren't there to watch Ralphie do the run, you've been partying too hard or have just been stuck on 36.

Have you been in Norman or Stillwater? Outside the stadiums is such a ****hole that no wonder people go in as soon as possible.

The whole thing about how winning games will bring people in is BS. Here in Austin, half the stadium doesn't fill up until half way into the first quarter. Too much alcohol to drink, and "talent" to appreciate at the tailgates to go into a no-beer zone.

Boulder has the same problem.

Yes, I have been to at least one game in Norman, and at least one game in Stillwater, pretty much every year for the past 15 years. OSU can't even sell out their stadium - so whether people arrive early or not, Rustoleum stadium has plenty of empty seats. Norman has great tailgating. I was driving around campus after lunch today and already there are people with their tents up and their barbeques going-- for UTAH STATE. They had 85,500 fans at last week's Miami game, and when I walked into the stadium at 10:30 in the morning it was pretty much packed.

That's a bunch of ****. Are you there for the game or for a kegger?

Well said. The continued late arrivals of many fans demonstrates apathy. If we want to be a big-time program again it DOES take fan support. Just take a look at other big time programs around the country and the one thing they all have in common is tremendous fan support.

I've heard many people, both CU fans and non-CU fans be criticial of our student section, for example, but I just wish more fans were that enthusiastic about the game. For example, they are always loud and cheering and on their feet. I would like to see the whole stadium like that, within reason, of course.

I'm there for both, actually. I show up well in advance of kickoff, so your comment certainly isn't directed at me, right? But it can't be ignored that a lot of people treat the football games like a social event. It's much more than a simple football game.

But I'm not the one that Mike Bohn is talking about, am I? He wants the folks who are out in the parking lots at kickoff to be inside the stadium.

I offer a solution to the problem. This was not an issue before they did away with beer sales.

I hate to beat a dead horse, but Boulder is not Norman, Lincoln, Columbus, Ann Arbor, etc. etc. The culture is completely different no matter what the product is on the field. Sure we have our hard-core fans, but the fan base is a bit more relaxed than in most other college towns. I bleed Silver and Gold and it sure doesn't bother me that Folsom is not packed 60 mins before kickoff. Next week we'll probably have 45k for Miami, OH -- that's Boulder and CU, deal with it.

I disagree. I think Boulder can have all the same electricity and festive atmosphere that all those other places have. The problem is that CU doesn't stir up the same kind of passion that those places do. That's not to say it can't happen, it can. I see a lot of good things happening on campus that should, some day, translate into some passionate fans.

In the meantime, bring back beer.

This position bothers me on a couple of levels. A) you are preaching to the chior here on allbuffs. B) If you really want to help the athletic department, sign up for the gold club or CU foundation. This is much more important than punctuality. C) CU fans don't need to appologize or try to keep up with the joneses. We Rock!

Truly Superior and I will be lucky to be in the stadium by kickoff:bang:. Vertically Challenged Superior is a Junior Denver Broncos Cheerleader and they have practice at Dove Valley from 4:30 - 6:30. Truly Superior will make every effort to get back home in time to make kickoff but no promises.:sad1:

nobody cares if folsom is filled an hour before kickoff...the problem is that it fills up 10 minutes into the first qtr. that's BS

:yeahthat::stupid:

If anyone wants CU to be like a "big time" program so much that we expect CU fans to emulate somewhere else, the terrorists have won.

If you love regimented tradition, go cheer for Texas A&M. Gig 'em and all that. If you love big crowds who show up on time, go find your little slice of heaven and leave CU alone.

The "change CU tradition" argument reminds me of the guy from Kentucky who moves to Phoenix. He misses home so much that he plants blue grass in his yard. Then he gets upset that the lawns are so hard to maintain in the desert.

CU is what it is, and that's just fine with me. First and foremost, CU fans should be true to themselves.

We're not ever going to be Alabama, Michigan, or OU.

Thank God for that.

My comment was directed at our fans in general.

My point is that some fans want us to be at the top again but don't want to do anything to help make that happen. Having the stadium filled before kickoff would help sell the program.

I know if I was a blue-chip recruit visiting and I saw 5K empty seats at kickoff I wouldn't be impressed, would you?

I agree with your first 2 points but with C we DO need to keep up with the Jones' whether it be with $$$ and fan support.
