There was no energy

Sorry, it just seemed like the crowd just went flat after the 1st half. It was very frustrating to see us out play FSU and then not be able to score. Then we give up the INT and let them score and it just was very frustrating. I don't know if I'll watch the game on TV or not. TV gives you a better perspective sometimes. But one good thing about watching it live is that you can see the downfield stuff a little better. It seemed sometimes like Cody kind of locked in on receivers. I was getting frustrated with both him and the play calling. But he showed some pretty good stuff in the 4th quarter.

One thing for sure. Our offensive coordinator better get a lot more imaginative than he was tonight. Maybe FSU's front D-line was just too much for us to handle. But I thought we called some really boneheaded plays tonight as well. Overall, though, I take encouragement from this game. Our D was damned good. Our O showed some flashes. We just need to put it all together. Oh, and our "special" teams sucked.

Re: Their was no energy

We just flat out don't have the players to compete, but you have to give Hawkins time.
He's only had one year, and it's going to take 3 years minimum to really see some results.

Our offense has really struggled in the 2nd half of the last two games. That has got to be attributable to the fact that we can't run the ball, as our opponents come out in the 2nd half knowing they don't have to defend the run.

Re: Their was no energy

If any of you fans want to hang up your buff shirts and run to mommie, please do so now.

The past two games have been a breeze to watch as compared to the game in Austin and the b12cg two years ago.

Anyone who wants to bitch about the small stuff and can't see the direction we are taking deserves a) a kick in the groin, b) a plague of boils, and c) the team to turn their back on them. Count your lucky stars that none of those (extremely deserved) scenarios will come to pass.

I see nothing but improvement over last year. There is improvement week to week. We are not going to overnight beat out teams from recruiting hotbeds. I do not think it will take much longer until we do. What we have will excite who we need to attract. Recruits will see that we are so close to getting it done, and will be excited about coming to Boulder. I can see the philosophy and the improvement of Hawkins. We have a good coach with a definite sense of direction. He said he came here to win national championships. From what I see, he will stay that course.

EXACTLY... I like where we are going.... even with the bone headed rookie mistakes we are making.

I like watching them much more than last year.

Well EXCUSE ME! Hey isn't it OK to be a little critical? As I said, I am encouraged. We just need a little time. At least, thats what I thought I said. :wink2:

Nah es ok. It's natural to be disappointed after a loss. Also realistic. We've all got our sights set pretty high for the Buffs. Many on this board have said this team is a work in progress. And that is right. I thought the D got high marks last night. Hard nosed and competitive. The offensive is just behind and needs some time to grow up so to speak.

Being realistic though, anybody who saw any of that SC/huckster game last night has to know we are oceans away from being national contenders right now. SC, like it or not is the benchmark of a great college team and I dare say they would methodically rip us to shreds at this point.

It just a shame it will take us a couple of years before we too will put that kind of a beat down on the hucksters.

And we also have to get through this tricky transition.......to win we need great recruits in bunches........to get great recruits in bunches we need to win

I'm just a wee bit, itsy bitsy, teeny weeny disappointed that we haven't shown that high tech 21st century offense that I thought DH would bring. But I do see little flashes of it. So I take encouragement from that.

I don't think SC could score more than 14 points against LSU. It's just that SC gets all the media attention - like Notre Dame used to get. ND was over rated for years, but it has all come crashing down for fatso now. Weis will be looking for another job very soon.

I was going back and forth watching two games...CU's game looked slow compared to the SC game.

I think CU's D looked much better than I expected...I think they are improving but I don't see much improvement on the O side. And the fact they couldn't get the plays in was ridiculous! I don't think Helfrich is much better than Watson if it was truly Watson's fault. Maybe it's not truly Helfrich's fault either...but there is not much difference between the two yet no one is jumping down Helfrich's throat.

Why is that? :wow:

Well, my dear Gate, I don't think Helfrich will get a pass too much longer if he doesn't get the offenses **** together. :smile2:

Maybe because we see that we have no talent on the OL (thanks to Barnett and Watson and the rest of the clowns bad recruiting)..

I dont buy the lack of talent argument....if you look at the recruiting class rankings for both CU and Boise since 2002 this is how it stacks up...

2002 CU-22 BSU - 75
2003 CU-19 BSU - 73
2004 CU-49 BSU - 72
2005 CU-44 BSU - 73

Hawk seemed to be able to do just fine with recruiting classes in the 70s at Boise but all of a sudden we need big time players at CU to win consistently? I'm just wondering when the team is going to step up and win one that they shouldn't. Seems like Hawk can't get it all clicking at once and there are consistently breakdowns and mistakes every game that cost us.
I agree we do look a whole lot better than the end of the Barnett era and we are competing better every game but I just dont see the improvement that many of you are talking about.

I think you may be overlooking that you recruit kids to play in a specific system. Are the kids on the team now fitting the scheme the coaches want to run? Make an honest assessment. JMHO.....

To a point...but I dont think you consistently recruit 1 and 2 star players over 4 and 5 star players, if you have a choice, on the basis that they fit your system. I can see that you recruit a QB that is mobile if that's the offence you run or one that is a drop back passer if you run a pro-type offence. But the majority of other positions you take the best athlete available and teach him your system.

If there was ever a big game that CU had a chance to win under Hawk it was against FSU. Playing at home, 3rd game of the season, offense should be improving, special teams should be improving, FSU is more than beatable and we lose by 10! FSU is being quoted that they played a horrible game, especially offensively, and they still beat us by 10 at home.

I am still willing to give Hawk more time to get things done but I am not as encouraged as most of you about where this team is headed...I hope I am wrong.

Re: Their was no energy

They can say that if they want, but I thought we outplayed 'em. If we'd made those two FG's, I think we would have won. FSU had what, 10 first downs? The only reason they won was because of their D-line.

Which is one of my points...they had one group of players out of six that played well and they beat us at home. I wouldn't have minded losing if FSU came out and played really well on both sides of the ball but they didn't and we couldn't get it done. I know the o-line didn't play well but at some point it is up to the coaches to put them in a position to win and find plays that will work, Helfrich and Hawk didn't.

When your biggest conference game is Fresno every year, those type of recruits will get it done if coached up. BSU won a huge game last year against OU by playing lights out and having the ball bounce in their direction every time they needed it. 99 times out of 100 OU beats that BSU team. That was their best team! We play a much more difficult preconference schedule and the B12 is brutal. We don't have the horses yet no matter how many trick plays or great coaching schemes we have. That FSU team was a hollow shell of Bowden's teams in the 90's and we still were lacking in the talent to make up the gap. That's the reality.
The good news? We have a good coach and staff and the players look to be improving. I would say we are still several years out but it can be done. I would say 5-6 wins this year and then 7-8 lnext year with '09 being the year we can compete again.

Most of the teams BSU play are no worse than CSU and BSU not only won...they would blow them out. In those years they also beat a half decent Oregon State team that is probably comparable to ASU this year. I have not been that impressed with the development of the team and especially the play calling.

I'm sorry but give me a ****ing break. What would BSU's overall record be the last 3-4 years if they had to play CU's schedule year in and year out? They'd probably be a 7-5 type team just like CU was except for last year. There are 120 teams in Div 1-A or whatever the **** its called now so the difference between 49 and 72 really isn't that huge when talking about recruiting rankings. Anyone who really thinks we have Top 25 talent right now is just not paying attention.

Re: Their was no energy

Hawkins had alot of time at BSU and BSU did have their "moments" like in Georgia 2 yeras ago. They also lost some heart breakers in bowl games with picks and almost did it again in the Fiesta Bowl. BSU was on a roll (reality may bite this season) and does have a relatively easier schedule - a couple Mtn West teams and a middle road PAC 10 team every year. The WAC is the WAC with more low flyers. I think one difference - SO FAR - is that other than Georgia BSU plays most teams pretty tough even in a loss. UW game 2 this year was mistake prone this year though with 4 turnovers for BSU and a loss.

One bad thing about BSU's schedule is you need to be perfect. CU could lose a couple OOC games to ranked teams - win the B12 and get a great bowl. Agree BSU could not play the OU's week in and week out - the Broncos do not have the depth to knock heads regularly with B12 teams.

Hawk also had the absolute support of the community here. Boulder can get testy with football and football players and like to tear down the house while seeking justice.

I say give Hawk time. It took Slick Rick time to leave a legacy of garbage. Barnett got caught in the spider web. Hawk has a big hole to dig out of. I give him credit for taking on the challenge. He could have stayed here in Boise and walked on water for the rest of his career.

In no way do I think that CU has top 25 talent right now. But neither do FSU or ASU and we got beaten pretty good by ASU and couldn't beat an FSU team at home that admittedly played horrible.

My point through this whole discussion is that I dont believe Hawk has done a great coaching job. That in no way means that I want him gone. I just think that Hawk proved at BSU that he can coach UP supposedly inferior athletes. I dont believe he has done that here...yet.

A lot of people on here are blaming the last two losses on inferior talent but I cant dismiss the losses that easily. I think coaching has had a lot to do with these losses, especially the FSU game.

I think most people way overestimate the impact "coaching" has on a game. Did the Buffs look unprepared to play? Are they poorly conditioned? Are they committing numerous mental mistakes like false starts, offsides, delay of game? Are they giving up prior to the clock reading 0:00? If any of those are yes, then there are definitely coaching problems. If you're seeing missed tackles, dropped passes, missed blocking assignments, being burned deep, missing the running lane, throwing interceptions, missing kicks, then those are player issues. Whether they're because of talent or youth or whatever else, who knows.

I don't entirely disagree with you. There was some playcalling that I don't agree with. But CU was able to keep the game relatively close and had they made at least one FG, would have been right there with a chance to win. But there are alot of factors in winning a football game: talent, scheme, minimizing penalties, turnovers, etc. The difference between those is that having superior talent can make up for shortcomings in every other area. Superior coaching can only do so much without talent. Hopefully the staff continues to grow and get better as well as improve the overall talent level.

AMEN Crash!

FSU can claim they didn't play well, but I'm not buying it. They didn't turn the ball over once. No interceptions, no fumbles, no snaps going whizzing past the QB. They played a mistake-free football game. They might not have played an inspired over-the-top performance type game, but they didn't hurt themselves, either.
