So, he's gone 2-10 and 5-4. That adds up to, what, 7-14. He's won a third of his games so far. How do you grade him? I grade him B+ based on recruiting and beating the likes of OU. But I prefer to look at the projections. The curve is on the upward trend. I liken Hawk to a one armed fighter right now. Once he has all his weapons, look out. I just love the guy.

So, lets say he starts getting it rolling, which I expect. Does he become a Joe Paterno or a Dennis Erickson? Do you think Dan would want to go to the NFL or build a powerhouse college program? In my mind, All I care about is that he returns respectibility to CU. The rest will take care of itself. But I sure as hell love Hawk.

gotta love a one armed fighter that can take out a powerhouse. :gobuffs:

i offer to lend my skiboots for the fight, if needed...

he's getting his system in place. recruiting has picked up and he did pretty darn well last year too.

i am not going to judge him on record at this point in time. he gets the Coach Mac benefit--- i'll wait to judge him until he's been here 3 full recruiting classes.

and, yeah, he's going to leave eventually. given how he left bsu, i suspect he will be careful not to put us in a bad position when he leaves.

in a perfect world, he said he wants to nail a national championship and a heisman at CU, so hopefully he will stay until those goals are met. he had lots of primo opportunities and he chose CU because of the "fit." i think he'll stay awhile but there is no guarantee.

also, given his desire to "challenge" himself, i suspect that if he leaves after a successful run at CU, he'll go to the nfl and try that. but, that is predicated on his doing well here.

I just can't see Hawk in the NFL. He just strikes me as more of a teacher and mentor type than a babysitter for pro athletes. I could always be wrong though.

I could see him leaving to a "bigger" program than CU. But maybe when he reaches his goals at CU, CU will be that program. Who the hell knows.

"Bigger program than CU", what the **** are you talking about!

Given he does get CU back into the Top 10 regularly, why not stay the rest of his career? Why can't CU be the "bigger program"? We're capable of winning MNC's, it's not like we're Toledo, Houston or a true "lesser program". I've always thought CU was ideal because it's not a pressure-cooker for coaches (unless they lose control of the program).

Agreed. He reaches his goals, and CU is there.

I don't see Hawkins going to the NFL. I think he is about teaching and molding kids and that is what drives him. The NFL is a totally different world full of ego's. I don't see that as a draw for him.

I think we have a chance of being Hawkins last coaching job, but he is fueled by challenges, so it depends if he still feels like CU is a challenge after he wins us his 2nd MNC.

just remember that kooaid was invented in *ebraska. I prefer Hawaiian punch as a tribute to all of our polynesian BUFFS.

it was??? :wow:

**** KOOLAID!

hawaiian punch goes better with jungle juice anyway. :smile2:

After two years in Boulder, the blush hasn't come off of the rose. It looks like coach Hawk is great fit. We not only have the coach, but a well adjusted wife and son.

I can't think of an other Big 12 school where a the HC can skydive, recomend the "Alchemist" and sign off his blog with "peace". Maybe Oregon, or some other northern part of the Pac 10 gets closer to his boyhood roots. But are those schools really a step up?

It's great that he landed Miller last year and John Major this year, pulling the best talent in the State to CU. He also is recruiting well elsewhere.

Mark my words, Dan Hawkins will be the best coach EVER to coach at CU..

There's no doubt in my mind he will accomplish greatness here..

LONG LIVE THE HAWK!!!

I absolutely think Hawk is just what we needed and will achieve his goals here.

That being said, I want some of what Jimmy is drinking!

i have thought about this in the recent past....and while i can't ever picture CU building a program/following/stadium/facilities like LSU, Florida, Georgia, tOSU, Michigan etc....i CAN see CU becoming a perennial highly ranked team like VaTech....i'd be OK with that!

I think it's only fair to judge him when he gets his system in place in 2-3 years. I think he is building us back though.

I love Hawk and i see great things on the horizon for the Buffs and this program. He is a perfect fit for Boulder and i see him being there for a long time to come.

From 2-10 last seson to 5-4 so far on a verge of a bowl game is more than I could have asked for and it bodes very well for the future.

Factor in a freshman QB who will be here all 4 years and will get better and better, i think by the time Cody graduates, this program is humming along and life will be very good in Boulder!

I cannot see Hawk leaving CU for anyone else, just read his blogs, Boulder is like a perfect fit for him. As for going off to bigger programs, sure there are about 15 schools out there that might offer him a lot more money or prestige but out of those 15 bigger programs there are very few that can offer him the qualty of life that I believe he covets. He would be a horrible fit at any SEC school. Perhaps a couple of Big 10 schools but Tressel isn't going anywhere, Michigan is going after Miles, Penn State wil hire a Paterno guy. ACC is out, FSU will hire Bowden's choosen sput them successor, Miami wil give Shannon a few years, Beamer is god in Blacksburg, and can you really see Hawk living in Boston??? The only conference that I can forsee would be a Pac-10 school, so let's take a look at those that would offer something better then CU can, USC, I think that question answers itself, UCLA, I would hardly rate them ahead of CU. Washington would make me sick, Oregon, Belloti isn't going anywhere. Perhaps Cal, only because Berkley would give Hawk the same feeling of home he gets in Boulder. I think Hawk will be here for the long haul, especially with his son here, he really now has the ties to the program that we have not really ever had.

Frankly, I think it's more important to keep Mike Bohn than worrying about Hawkins. If Bohn is gone, Hawkins may feel like he's lost his support system.

I think Hawk is doing a GREAT job with CU football. The team is generally playing tough football, against the better teams, for most of each game they have lost. You can see improvement all the time, and that's only going to help in years to come with recruiting. I am so envious of CU having a coach like Hawk, while Cuse sits in the basement with a coach who doesn't give me the same feeling of hope....

I think Hawk has done phenomenal so far and I am very happy with the direction he is heading our program.

Like many of you here, I don't see Hawk leaving for another program or the NFL, I think CU will be his last football coaching job. I think he will be the HC for the next 10-12 years and then step down to take on other challenges off the field (sort of like what Mac did). I'm not saying he's going to lead a new Christian movement but I definitely see him in a role as a mentor/motivator. He's a the kind of guy who likes to coach people but more than coaching football I think he likes to coach people about life and what intangibles and perspectives people can employ to win in life ("seek not the target, rather be the bow", "get your horns out", "get out of your comfort zone and take risks", etc.). Even now you can see that he's more passionate about these kids and helping them create the life they want than winning football games. It makes sense to me that the next step is to expand and not just help young football players achieve their life dreams but everyone. When it's all said and done we are going to be extremely proud to be able to associate Dan Hawkins with our fine university.

I liked Hawk when he was first hired. Just a vibe about him that I liked. But I wasn't completely sold on him until midway through last season. When he was on with Alfred Williams on the Fan someone asked him about getting his kind of players into his kind of system, etc. Hawk stopped him short and said these were his players, he's their coach, and a few other things. They were 0-6 at the time. It was pretty inspiring. He just kind of gave that 'we're all in this together,' tone, and I thought Al was gonna start crying.

Whether he gets a MNC during his time a CU or not, I believe he'll have the Buffs back as top 10 regulars again. We're seeing glimpses of what the future will be with tough, hard hitting defenses, and a balanced attack on offense. I really like Hawk and Helfrich's commitment to run the ball and wear defenses down(i.e. the Okie game).

DING DING DING! We have a winner! We are very fortunate to have both Bohn and Hawkins at CU. And I think they are both GREAT "fits" for CU. I think that is huge. Look at two coaches that are currently packing their bags...Callahan and Franchione. Neither one of those coaches ever "fit" their school. Don't get me wrong, as long as you win, then you fit. But I think we are lucky to have an AD and football coach that so perfectly match Boulder. In my mind, there is no reason to worry about how long he'll be here, let's just enjoy the ride and focus on the process (hey, that sounds like something Hawk would say!). The last thing we need is a coach saying he wants to be the Joe Paterno of Colorado, er...nevermind!:smile2:

Put me in the group that is full on, sold out, on Hawk. I am most impressed that he stuck to his guns last year, in establishing his plan. His best chance to win last year was to play White at QB. But he sucked it up and didn't take the easy road when White proved not to be the type of player that Hawk was looking for. He's said it many times, it's not rocket science. He has a plan. And from the looks of it (recruiting, improvement on the field, no problems off the field, etc) that plan is in full swing and is working.

GO BUFFS!
