Championships start in less than 1-1/2 days in Louisville KY, with the women scheduled to start at 8:45 AM MT (10:45 Louisville time), and the men one hour later.

(In past years, they've had a great "Event Wall" that collected tweets and other reports from the races, but I don't see a link for that (yet?).)

Schedule -
8:45 a.m. (MT) - Women’s 6k Race (Edit- due to weather concerns, moved up to 7:00 MT)
9:45 a.m. (MT) - Men’s 10k Race (Edit- due to weather concerns, moved up to 8:00 MT)

Note- Looks like weather could very well have an effect, with Flotrack reporting trail is muddy right now (Only 10% chance of rain Friday, so maybe the trail will dry some?) , and weather.com has 50% chance of rain and, maybe more importantly, 20 MPH winds forecasted for race-time. The Buffs are traditionally known to be good bad weather runners, so this might be an advantage?

(Only 7 of each gender will actually run. For the Buffs this initial list contains approx. 11 men and 14 women. For the Buff men, John Dressel (one of the anticipated top 2 finishers going into the year) is NOT listed, so assume he is taking a medical redshirt year. Hopefully he'll be healed and ready to go for track.)

(Bummer they've decided to not even try to keep fans interested by either offering the races directly through the NCAA.com (which was done until last year) OR at least offer a more-affordable pay per view day pass. Guess the NCAA has given up on growing or even retaining interest in the sport, and they're too lazy to do anything themselves for XC fans, including families of current student-athletes, potential future XC student-athletes, etc..)

I’m pumped for the races.

Fingers crossed Dani Jones turns in another inspirational performance and the women end the race ranked as well as they come into it.

I’ll be happy if the men come out ahead of Stanford.

For anyone who just loves to hear about sports, love running, and are either/ or early risers are in later timezones, Flotrack is having a free (unlike the races themselves) pre-races show that is on now. (Note- they are covering DII and DIII races as well as DI.)

They've now winnowed down the entry lists to declared only (see below). For the Buffs, the men are now down to 7, while the women will still need to sit a couple of the young women listed below. (With depth being Colorado's strong suit, whoever the 2 are, think they'd probably be good enough to be part of the top 7 at any other school):

Deciding which 2 women to sit at this point must be excruciatingly painful for the runners and the coaches.
 
I'm listening to another pre-race show (this one Letsrun's- go to http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/talkCast.jsp?masterId=72655&cmd=tc if wanting to listen). They did just say, with the start only 15 minutes or so away, the weather is holding up, so hopefully, at MINIMUM, the women's race won't have too much rain or wind.

EDIT- Although, after writing above, per the below, looks like rain, at minimum, definitely looks like a possibility.


 


And, looks like our AD has made it from No. Carolina (where he was watching the soccer match yesterday evening) to Louisville.
 
Looks like a gap forming already- doesn't look like this will be a "sit and kick" race in ANY way.
 
Obviously VERY early, but through 2K Buffs showing in 2nd, just 8 points (172 to 180) behind Oregon, with all the main competition (New Mexico, San Francisco, Stanford, etc.) right there also.
 
Now through 4K, still VERY close- USF actually showing in the lead with 172, New Mexico at 181 and the Buffs at 185.
 
Still obviously a sprint left, but looks like most of the Buffs lost some positions at the 5K point, so will have to go HARD in the last 1K. There still in 3rd, but quite a bit behind now New Mexico and USF.
 
New Mexico finishing well- with their "Big 4" all in the top 14. As anticipated, it will come down to how well their 5th runner can finish.
 
Looks like 2 more Buff All-Americans (='s top 40 overall finish), unofficially, as Sage Hurta showing in 35th and Kaitlyn Benner in 36th!

Next in for the Buffs is Makena Morley in 5oth and Madie Boreman in 62nd.

Don't think that's quite enough for a win, but should definitely have them on the podium. Unofficially, Buffs showing in 3rd with 193, behind winner New Mexico at 119 and, in a dream season for them, USF in 2nd at 144. (Stanford will round out the podium in 4th IF results hold.)
 
I often consider running a very "honest" sport, where the work put in (along of course with natural talent) will usually rule the day. HOWEVER, it still amazes me how unpredictable it can be:
  • A young woman at Washington who Dani Jones and Rainsberger of Oregon beat with kicks at Pac 12's has a GREAT race and finishes 2nd overall, 20 seconds ahead of Jones and 24 seconds ahead of Rainsberger.
  • Of the 3 main favorites coming in, the young woman from New Mexico won as expected. However, her perceived main challengers finished back in 11th (she was also the defending champion) and 18th.
 
Note- Again unofficial, but looks like the Buffs are still showing as finishing in 3rd. (Do want to note the main difference (probably) between the finishing points I noted earlier are before runners who aren't running with a team are backed out from team scoring.)

 
And those scores in my above post (#25) are showing as official. I'm sure the team may have had higher dreams, but should never be too unhappy (if unhappy at all) at being 3rd best in the country. hope the team all rests up, and gets ready for a strong track season!

I do want to note something Wetmore has touched on before but won’t mention today in his interviews: the two teams that finished above the Buffs have multiple international runners that come to the US when they aren’t quite ready for the pro circuit and go to the highest bidder. Wetmore refuses to play this game.

PS - also, the Buffs will return their top 6 scorers for next season, so the woman’s team should be among the top few programs again in 2018.

Way to go, Maddie.

All these teams from the west own cross country.

It would be a plus if the venue for the Natties rotated instead of roosting in Kentucky year after year. Having the races out west every once in a while would benefit all these athletes from the the winning teams even more.

One of these years I wanna go support the Buffs in person.

That weather today looks like it sucks.

3rd is respectable. Good job, ladies.

And, as I noted earlier but can now say OFFICIALLY, BIG congrats to the 3 young women noted in the above tweets, as their Top 40 finishes mean they've earned All-American honors. Believe that will be the 3rd for senior Benner, while being the 2nd for junior Jones and sophomore Hurta.
 
Also want to add another good day for the Pac (3 of the top 5) and the west overall, with the TOP 6 finishers.
