Is Bo Pelini gonna bring NU back to dominance? I have mixed emotions. I think any good defensive minded coach is a good bet. Bo is unproven as a head coach, but so was Bob Stoops.
I have heard Bo is not a very good recruiter, but a good recruiting staff can change that.

One other thing, after we beat Nu this year, I realized that it just didn't feel as good when we beat them when they are good. It just wasn't te same, it was kinda like beating a Iowa St, I just was happy and left the game. So what I'm saying is I almost want NU to get good again, so we can bring back the CU/Nu rivalry to where it means something again other than bowl eligibility. Lets get Nu and CU back at top of thew north!

Re: Is this gonna be a good hire for NU?

I hate the Bugeaters but I always had respect for Turner Gill and I think Dr. Tom just bent him over and gave him a cornshuck in the keyster.

Re: Is this gonna be a good hire for NU?

Excuse my ignorance, but is Buffalo any good this year?

i know they were 5-3 in the MAC and were co MAC East Champs with Little Miami, a major major step forward from where they've been since they joined the MAC. i remember one of their first years in the mac byron leftwich had 480 yards passing and 4 touchdowns against them in the first half.

Re: Is this gonna be a good hire for NU?

I think he is a great defensive coach but I just don't see the guy leading them back to the promised land or even consistent dominance of the Big 12 north.

I think one of the unspoken problems here is the hucksters stumble (and I include the Solich years in this too) gave other teams a chance to catch up.

The overall coaching bar has been raised (bright young minds making an impact), the number of scholarships have been reduced and kids are realizing they can go to a place other than Lincoln and become a college great with a hope for the pro's. I don't think it mattered who they hired they will never be the program they once were again

Re: Is this gonna be a good hire for NU?

i wasnt all that impressed with Bo the one year he was at OU. the 2004 defense had the talent to be really good, but I believe it was his coaching and schemes thjat really hurt the Sooner defense. I can recall several times Brent Venables in his face and he just got right back at Brent. Plus Bo was the one who put the defensive secondary in postion in the Orange Bowl where Norm Chow passed at will against OU....

I say he is gone in 4-5 years if that long.... I dont think he will win more than 5-7 games any given year while HC at knu....

Re: Is this gonna be a good hire for NU?

nobody will ever be like the machine that was the Husker teams of the 90s

Pelini just said

that during his last stint in Stincoln that he was there for 9 months but it felt like 3 years, wow, what a miserable place it must really be to feel that way. Sounds like this might be a short term deal for him if it sucks so bad :)

Re: Pelini just said

I can back up his assertion. I've driven through Nebraska at least 20 times in my life... the clock said each trip only took 6 or so hours, but I swear it was a lot more like 14 years each way.

Re: Pelini just said

Yeah, that is what I read into that!:wow:

Told his LSU players last night after the game that Nebraska was his dream job. Has always said how much he loved being in Lincoln. Nothing short term about this hire.

Yeah, know what you mean, kind of like how I felt the previous two years against CU, or the ENTIRE 90's!!!!!!

I think they will win more then that because their schedule is so weak, you and I together could put a game plan that will yield 5-7 wins with their upcoming schedule.

Re: Is this gonna be a good hire for NU?

Pete Carroll's top team would have been a great 2nd team on the 1995 University of Nebraska Cornhusker's Football team!!

Entire 90's? Are you on crack? There were a lot of implications in those years. CU game meant a lot to NU then and CU was good then.

I remember hearing the same thing when Cally said he planned to retire at NU and all Fuskers were ecstatic.

They are all out in force today beating their chests like it is the second coming, I suppose after watching a team all season that gave it up more then Paris Hilton we can give them a bit of a break.

They were the same way after they hired Cally. Bo MIGHT be good, but I doubt he is a Pete Carroll

My god. They have a fan with a sense of reason. :smile2:

Then there is this guy...

Still clinging to the past eh? How many times did my Cane's roll your asses? Uh huh. :smile2:

Re: Is this gonna be a good hire for NU?

Don't really get the hire.. Seems like a big reach in my mind. I don't see the track record and don't believe he's the defensive genius that the national media perceives him to be..

Nebraska would have been better with Paul Johnson or Grobe...

Re: Is this gonna be a good hire for NU?

CU wishes NU would have hired Paul Johnson!

I suppose after watching a team all season that gave it up more then Paris Hilton we can give them a bit of a break.

Yeah because your stalwart defense was phenomenal this past season!!

Pelini may or may not work out. I do know that the NU defense you saw this year, will not even be close to the defense that you see next year. NU will put either Ganz or Lee into the spread option, and we'll see y'all in Lincoln next year!! Fun times right around the corner in Star City!

Re: Is this gonna be a good hire for NU?

I dunno.... I think this is a mixed bag for me. My breakdown of Bo.

Upside:
1)understands the tradition and quirks of NU and its fans and pressures.
2)will listen to TO and use him as a resource.
3)will have minimal transition pains for players since it appears several staff members might be retained.
4)will get the players to play hard, will get the most out of them.
5)will recruit players wanting to play CFB with heart not just a stepping stone to the next level and attitudes that come with the amount of stars behind their name.
6)will be a healer to the fan base that is currently split.
7) there will be familiar faces back on the staff from the past.
8) likes Nebraska, his wife loves Nebraska, wants to stay longterm.... if he is successful this is a bonus.

Downside:
1) seems to be kind of a dufus, not well spoken, dorky looking.
2) does not seem to have an idea of what O he wants to run.
3) could be a "yes man" for TO.... that becomes dangerous.
4) his temper.
5) there might be too many familiar faces on staff from the past.
6) does not come in with a pre-established staff and system, could take a couple years to gel and get into a rhythm.... expect turnover as this happens.
7) is a bit of a risk, this could fail but I think TO will make sure he does not, its his legacy in the end.... that can get complicated in TO's own way.
8) I just dont know if he is ready.... can we (NU fans) afford to learn on the go and keep the bar low enough, long enough to reap the benefits?

i dont know what their OOC is, but I am sure its the usual cupcakes with mid tier schools. In conference they still have to deal with the likes of CU, KU, MU, KSU and ISU in the north, and OU, TTech and Baylor in the south. I'll give them Baylor and ISU, but the others are all possible losses at this point of the 2008 season.

Pelini is no Stoops.....

Re: Pelini just said

*sniff* *sniff*, I think I smell fear.

Actually the sniffing you are doing is to choke back the tears from the hiring of yet another unknown as far as head coaching experience is concerned.

I think Pelini was Osborne's first choice from the get go.
To me that in itself lacks vision with all the great young choices that might have been out there.

When the Buffs broke so to speak our AD gave more attention to a coach who could rebuild and be a fixture in Colorado for many years.

I really wonder if Osborne even thought about that when he tapped Pelini on the shoulder.

I also wonder was he really hiring a coach who would definitely return the hucksters to greatness or was he just taking care of an old friend??
