How a Bowl selects its teams ....

Those execs are the reason we cant get a playoff. They dont want to give up their 'gig' and right now they control the pursestrings.

I think that the Universities are the reason we can't/won't get a playoff.

It must be realized that of the 118 teams who play Div I-A football, there vast majority are teams like North Texas, UTEP, Rice, Troy, etc., which all know that they have no realistic shot at making a playoff system, be it 8 teams, 16 teams, or even 32 teams. So they have absolutely no interest in a playoff system.

The current bowl system is a feel good system. All the teams and the University admins get to go to a nice destination for a week, where they are wined and dined and treated with lots of nice things.

Personally, I don't care if we never have a playoff. I also wouldn't mind if we went back to the old way - where we knew which bowl the conference champion was going to before the season even began. The "controversy" over who is the #1 team is part of what makes college football great, imo.

I know a bowl committee member of the Armed Forces Bowl in Ft. Worth. I was told their selection process consisted of two agenda items. (1) what teams will get the most fannies in the stands and, (2) where will our complimentary seats be located.

BTW, in the first year of that bowl, Boise St. played. He had very complimentary things to say about Hawk. Of course back then, it was the Ft. Worth bowl, but it was nice to hear an outsider have nice things to say about Hawk.

I'm with Slade: I'd much rather have the "old" bowl system rather than this BCS crap.

I've never bought into the argument that a playoff would destroy the bowl system. Why can't there be "non-playoff" bowls in addition to a playoff bracket? That way those Sun Belt, MAC, WAC , etc. teams can still be rewarded for a decent season.

There would be no need for a 'committee' to travel and 'scout' teams if there is a playoff. Their gig is sniffing jocks and paying for travel and tickets of the 'committee'. All that would go away.

That's what I think should be done. Take those 7 top bowls, and make them over three weeks and let 8 teams duke it out. Let everyone else play bowls like they are now. Problem solved. Yes, some more time away from studies for the student athletes. But you could cut the season back to 11 games again, and only 4 teams would have the extra game, and two of those the extra 2 games over what they play now. Small price on very few teams to have the best duke it out in a true playoff.

I say you can have both.

My theory was to have a 16 team playoff with the first game at some teams home stadium ($ chuck ching) on the first saturday in December. Once you had eight teams left you seat the teams to lesser bowls coontracted by the NCAA or just keep using the home stadiums or a neutral site. The season culminates with the NC game on New Years day at the Rose, Fiesta, Sugar, or Orange Bowl on an alternating basis. The bowls can then return to their traditional tie ins on the off years that they do not host the NC game.

Even the first round losers could still end up in a bowl game.

16 teams is just way too many for a playoff. When college football transitions from a purely bowl format to a bowl/playoff hybrid system (and this is a matter of when, not if), they need to be mindful to keep the regular season as pressure packed as it is now. I'd prefer a 6 team playoff (with 1 and 2 getting byes), but I'd be fine with a 4 team or an 8 team playoff too.

Either would be good. I'm starting to like the and-one idea as a way to get a playoff system started. We won't see a quantum jump to a several team playoff anytime soon. Cities/bowls want their tourism $'s and the colleges will argue that their fans can't travel to 2 or 3 different locales in consecutive weeks.

A D1 playoff system will have to start small, but there's still hope.
