About the UM/UArk coaching search..

I don't think so.

There was a sea change in college sports in the 90s when the NCAA reduced scholarships and cracked down on partial qualifiers, non qualifiers, and walk ons. Those changes created parity in the game and prevented big schools like Alabama from hording players. That allowed smaller/lesser programs to begin to score some talent and skill players and win games the shouldn't have.

That said, I think the impact on the coaching world is a guy no longer has to go to an Alabama or Michigan to get the best kids and win. You can now be successful as far down the food chain as Boise State, Louisville, or Cinncinnati. The coaches are now being made millionaires at these programs. The fans at those places are also a lot more reasonable. I believe that is why coaches now say no to a lot more to the bigger schools.

Arkansas, Alabama, and Michigan to a lesser extent will bring a lot more pressure to bear on whoeve the HC is. Schools in that class are going to have harder time and there gonna get a few more noes.

I think the guy you hired came off looking a whole lot worse than the school did.

As much as I hate to admit it, *ebraska probably did the best job out of all the teams so far in their coaching search. I'd bet good money that Dr. Tom had already spoken with Bo prior to giving Cally the ax and he knew it would just be a matter of working out the details. Contrast that to when they fired Slowpitch and it would appear that they learned their lesson. Whether they picked the right guy or not still remains to be seen.

Michigan and Arkansas didn't fire their coaches, their coaches quit on them. That adds another dimension to the deal. While the Michigan AD probably had a pretty good idea what was going to happen, that doesn't mean he could go out and start talking to prospective candidates ahead of time. I doubt the Arkansas AD knew what was coming. So that throws your timing off.

Arkansas gave Nutt a ****ty offer. They basically gave him an offer they knew he would probably turn down. So yeah, technically he quit on them, but they really didn't want him around any longer. The Arkansas AD completely botched the situation and has no one to blame but himself.

I have to be excused for not paying a whole lot of attention to SEC schools, but if I remember correctly, didn't the Ark AD and Nutt have a pretty rocky relationship to begin with? It could be that they wanted Nutt gone, but if you're going to fire a guy, you should have a pretty strong idea as to who you want to replace him. If you try to get him to leave on his own accord, you run the risk of looking like a total idot when your own coaching search blows up in your face.

I'll still say that this isn't quite as bad as the Alabama fiasco last year just because Michigan and Arkansas didn't actually fire their coach. Alabama did - and rightfully so, Shula was a tard. But just the same, if you're going to fire your coach, you better have a pretty good idea as to who you are going to replace him with.

i have heard that...one site said he was either there yesterday or today. lets hope it is true....him leaving could help us with Katoa :gobuffs:

Ya read my mind :smile2:

You listening Lynn? Or, did Bobbie S conveniently "forget" to tell you that his DC may not be around much longer? Oh, that's right, he was too busy being an expert on CU's roster.

Go Buffs!

Brady Hoke a really crappy coach at ball state and ex Michigan assistant, winning percentage .3ish, is getting a lot of noise. Man UM makes no sense when it comes to coaching hires.

Where are you getting the Petrino to Arky scoop? That article did not mention anything about Petrino

just something i heard through the grapevine, i'm not totally buying it, but it does make sense, the falcons are a mess right now, arkansas is willing to pay in the $3m range for a new coach. the sporting news reported that he could walk, with no penalty, from the falcons for a college job.

-I don't think Petrino is going to bolt the NFL after one season but stranger things have happened.

-I thought Miles would end up at UM until i read that article. NO way does he leave with that job security.....a new contract that pays him roughly 3m per year and the package doubles if he is ever fired which basically gives him immunity.

Seems to me that if Pertino has any NFL aspirations for the future he'd stay more than one year. He's going to get a pass from Falcons ownership for this season and would have a chance to draft his QB in the 2008 draft.

Petrino's a done deal. Big hire.

It's really not a surprise considering it has been said that he was very unhappy there. Next hire is the UM job??? I still have a feeling here that Miles is going to leave LSU after the title game for the UM job. It's almost too quite right now. :wink2:

Anyone know what the new buyout for his contract is now? I heard he finally did sign that extension.
