Could these teams be any more evenly matched?

Don't know if anyone's posted this in an Indy Bowl thread or not... team averages are on the right sidebar: http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/preview?gameId=273640038&confId=80

Total yards per game:
Colorado: 386.2
Alabama: 385.4

Passing yards per game:
Colorado: 236.2
Alabama: 234.8

Rushing yards per game:
Colorado: 150.0
Alabama: 150.7

Points per game:
Colorado: 27.6
Alabama: 26.8

I wish they had a comparison of defensive stats on that preview, but those stats are remarkably similar. Seriously, what are the odds? :wow:

We played a far more difficult schedule than Alabama did to get those same numbers though. Alabama played the 37th strongest schedule while Colorado's schedule is ranked at 15th (according to USA Today's Sagarin ratings). We played 5 teams (Mizzou, OU, KU, ASU, and TTU) currently ranked in the top 30 of the BCS (4 in the top 12) and beat 2 of them (#4 OU and #29 TTU). Alabama beat 2 of their 4 opponents in the top 30 (#16 Tennessee and #27 Arkansas, losing to LSU and Georgia) with none of their "quality" wins against a top 15 team. The numbers look very similar at first glance, but the seasons behind the numbers are very different.

Mizzou and Kansas were fortunate teams this year.

Mizzou is a 3.5 point favorite over an average SEC team. Ark went 4-4 in the SEC.

1 loss Kansas is an underdog to the ACC champ that the SEC champ put down 48-7.

Their wins over weak OOC teams and avoiding UT helped them to a great records.

I agree with everything you say with a couple caveats - One, Missouri is a very good football team. They have speed, size, and a QB with an accurate, strong arm. I think they'll slaughter ArKansas. They were unfortunate to run up against an Oklahoma team - twice - that seems to have their number. They pretty much dominated everybody else they played including Illinois, the one team to beat Ohio State this year.

Second, UT isn't all that great, at least this year. Avoiding them isn't that big a deal. Case in point, they nearly lost to *ebraska at HOME this year. They will probably be killed by ASU in the Holliday Bowl.
