We began the year coming off of the worst football season in recent memory. We had a lame-duck mens basketball coach and a women's basketball team that was entirely mediocre.

Today, we have a football team in a bowl game, a men's basketball team that has shown improvment with a high caliber head coach, a women's basketball team ranked in the top 25 and a football recruiting class that is expected to be the best since the McCartney days.

Not bad for one year's work, eh?

Nice job and "atta boy" to Mike Bohn, Bud Peterson, Hank Brown, Dan Hawkins, Kathy McConnell-Miller, Jeff Bzdelik and all of the athletic department staff and assistant coaches who've worked so hard to get us to where we are today. It's cool to be associated with CU again, and these folks are the reason why.

Didn't Neuheisel have a class or two that was ranked in the top 10?

I seem to recall the 1997 recruiting class was considered 1st or 2nd in the Big 12, but I could be wrong.

Does it really matter? More to the point, Sacky was pointing out how the AD seems to have turned the corner and CU Athletics are on their way back up. I totally agree and I'm very glad we've got these men and women representing CU

Nue's classes didn't feuture players like Bieniemy, Al Williams, Kanavis McGhee etc. This class that hawk is putting together def has some of those players and it is looking eerily similar to the great '87 class. This is a recruiting class that can build into a national champion contending team, I just didn't see that with Neu's classes.

But back to the point, it is good times to be a buff and the future looks so bright I gotta wear shades! We are beating teams like Oklahoma, LSU, Texas, Nebraska both on the field and in the recruiting!!

Make sure you include Misty Hawkins in that list. I think she does a lot to sway the moms of the recruits out there...

I completely agree Unleash. Amazing what a great year 2007 has been for the Buffs program.

I agree 100%. As a band member, I've seen the program evolve over the past few years and I feel like this is a really special time to be a Buff. I think 2007 is the beginning of a renaissance for athletics at CU and I can't wait to see what the future brings.

That and all of the TV time for the football team has increased the image of CU. Combined with all of the positive work that has been mentioned above and you have one of the best years we could have asked for. Bohn and company did a fantastic job which has made it even more fun to be a CU fan! Thanks guys!

We also upgraded our practice facilities this year.

Excellent point. Not only do we now have an all-weather practice facility, but there were major improvements made to the locker rooms, coaches offices, and they're moving towards improvements at the CEC.

I always chuckle a little when I hear talk about how our facilities don't match up with the rest of the Big 12. Well, they don't really have to. Nobodys facilities compare to this:

btw, we have the same type of bubble that Texas does

No, the 1997 class included Andre Gurode, Victor Rogers, Daniel Graham, Justin Bannan, Cortlen Johnson, Scott Nemeth, Roman Hollowell, Cedric Cormier-- all key components of the 2001 Big 12 Championship team that came within fractions of a point of playing for the national championship.

The point of my post was- this is not SMU. This has always been a good team with some good players. Whether CU can ever win a national championship again in today's college football world remains to be seen. I'll be happy with winning seasons and bowl victories.

she does deserve props. she is gracious and as committed to colorado as a spouse of a coach can be.

This season actually could have been better. We could easily have been 8-4 or even 9-3. We should have beaten KU and ISU. We also coulda shoulda beaten FSU. I guess my point is not that I'm disappointed in the season but that we are very close to the elite level.

There certainly were some good classes. The only caveat was that his teams didn't live up to their billing on the field. They weren't bad, but they looked better on paper.

Here's some of those old classes;

Notice McCartney's classes. They're who some sports writers are using as a barometer to measure this one.

BTW -- the reason people are so pleased with Hawkins is because his teams' on-the-field performance has surpassed their paper bona fides, and we can only guess what might happen with top-flight talent.

Well, I don't know why Colorado can't compete for a national title again with the players they are bringing in. Colorado is truly competing with the likes of OU, LSU, Florida and USC, and in a few years that will be the teams they will be competing with on the field. Colorado has elite status as a very good possibilty in the future.

Cormier, Hollowell, and Nemeth should not be compared to Mac's recruits. These guys would've rode the pine in the McCartney years. I am not trying to say they were horrible. The only players you mentioned who were worth mentioning are Gurode and Graham.

You can go ahead and pull for mediocrity. I want to see the Buffs compete for a National Championship.

We can compete. Mac proved you can bring in top notch recruits. But i don't want to see the program end up like Oregon's. Oregon always has great recruiting classes, but it never translates on the field.

This one is better than 97' and if i remember correctly we won the big 12 in 2001. Watch out mobilhoma lovers and stoopid followers

What I love is people bring up the argument that the reason Mac could recruit so well was because teams in the hotbeds were we recruited like Texas, Oklahoma and USC were "down" in those years. Well now those three teams are among the best in the nation, yet HAwk is proving he CAN consistently compete and win recruiting battles with Stoops, Mack Brown and Pete Carroll. I think that is damn impressive.

Colorado is one of the top 20 schools in the nation in college football history, and there is no reason to settle for mediocrity or just winning seasons. Colorado is about campionships. When my dad played in the late 60's the goal was to win a national championship every year when summer conditioning started.
