Neuheisel or how ever you spell in new UCLA coach

Heard it too; another reason to never root for any team ever from Cali

Slick Rick and Arnold can pal around now

i'd like to see the morals clause in his contract. i bet if he even breathes in an inappropriate way, he gets fired.

also, i bet this also means they will try to keep that assistant coach, walker, so that they can try to keep their class together.

I can't wait for the NCAA basketball tourny and the UCLA office pool.

Given who is available and willing to go to UCLA I think they did well. Neu will recruit well because he always did. Developing talent and coming up with a cohesive game plan were always the issues that I saw with him.

Wonder what effect this hire will have on the recruits that CU is looking at.

His recruiting classes were great. At least as long as you didn't want them to include things like linemen...

Dear UCLA recruits,

Do you really want to play in a program that will be on probation in a year or two? Come to CU!!!!!!

Good God though... We definitlaly don't need another former buffalo Out in UCLA... I swear . They just love post colorado coaching... Who was it in the 90's they stole? Oh.. Our O line Coach. The one guy who had kids like Vili Mau Mau and such... God we had beasts on our line back then.. =/

I think he has been humbled and will do ok there. If USC loses Carroll and they start to slide, I can see UCLA competing for the PAC 10 title with the roll out punts :smile2:

How did Neuheisel ever convince Andre Gurode to come to Colorado? We had a nice O line during those years, but that was the guy that made a difference for CU. He recruited some other outstanding players too, so give him a talent base in So Cal and he'll pull in players. Then he'll take them tubing in Riverside county and they'll get all soft-like.

I remember Rick's classes were always good to great on signing day but usually 2-5 of the crown jewels of the class fell out due to academic ineligability so what actually showed up on campus was a class in the top 30-50.

As far as Slick's teams I only remember lots of penalties, no running game and "losing focus on the bus ride to the game".

I also remember that he was a hell of a game day coach and his ability to improvise new strategies on the fly after kick off to counter what the other team was doing was superb.

'95 vs aTm is a perfect example of what you speak of. making aTm burn those time outs for the extra point was completely awesome and had was, imo, a huge part of why CU won that game.

he coached a great game that day.

Victor Rogers wasn't chopped liver either, that guy was just a beast.

Yep, he recruited Gurode and Rogers in 1997. And they were absolute beasts. Two of the best ever at CU.

But overall, Slick had 4 classes at CU - 1995-1998. The 1999 class was trashed when he walked out in January. Aside from Gurode and Rogers, the OL in those 4 full classes were:

1995
Shane Cook
Kane Cullum
Ryan Johanningmeier
Corey Kish
Chris Morgan
Shane Willems

1996 (7 DBs and 5 WRs in this class...)
Tom Ashworth
Jason Entzminger
David Herrick

1997
Brad Bedell
Eric Huizingh
Mike Wambolt
(Gurode and Rogers in this class)

1998
Justin Bates
Ryan Gray

Looks like a fairly long list, 16 linemen in 4 years. But 4 per year isn't enough. And only 2 in 1998?? Is it any wonder that the cupboard at OL ended up bare a few years later? I will give him credit in that he got several good ones, but there just weren't enough OL recruited when he was here.

Nice summary, and that adds up to most of my recollection of the Ricky years. Spotty GREAT players but just not enough of them. Never any recruiting base anywhere, where he could "go to the till" each and every year.

Remember, coming off the McCartney years, the expectations were pretty high for our assistants. So many of those guys ended up with great jobs, deservedly. Then Ricky came in and just didn't have that commitment to excellence that Mac instilled in this program. He talked a great game but didn't mind the details, IMO.

Here's what I remember, 10-2, 10-2 (with Mac recruits), then 2 years of mediocrity and sloppy football. We're still recovering from that slide. Thank God it appears to be happening finally.

Do you have a link to the full 1997 class? Looking at that 2001 senior class, that one had to be an absolute monster. Gurode, Rogers, Graham, Michael Lewis, Hollowell, Justin Bannan, Cortlen Johnson, Minardi (I was never a huge fan)... who am I missing here?

I think it's an interesting hire. I think Rick's indiscretions have probably been blown out of proportion. He's paid for his mistakes and he deserves another chance. It's probably time to retire my "Rick is a Dick" 2000 game shirt.

While everyone seems to look first at Skippy's character, for me, the primary concern is that I don't know how good of a coach he is. His coaching record isn't that great, especially if you look at the 28-20 record he accumulated in his 3rd and 4th seasons at both programs. I would think his record over his 3rd and 4th seasons would be a better indicator of his coaching talent than his record over the 1st and 2nd seasons.

However, he was just 34 when he took over the Colorado program. He'll probably be better this time around as he has gained the training and maturity that he should have had before becoming a head coach. We'll see.

I hear you but the pessimist in me says "a leopard never changes his spots". I want to believe Skippy has learned the error of his ways and is ready to lead with character but I think he's just got a little too much lawyer in him.

True, but what has he really done?

He blind-sided Colorado when he left. Many coaches and employees in general do this to their employers.

NCAA came down on him for violating the "spirit" of the recruiting rules. He "bumped" recruits instead of contacting recruits in a manner expressly prohibited by the rules. At most, his mistake was that he liberally interpreted NCAA rules to gain a recruiting advantage. He took his medicine from the NCAA and moved on.

He gambled on the NCAA tourney when an internal UW memo said he could. Keep in mind he got $2.5M from the NCAA and $2M from UW in connection with a wrongful termination suit. This suit went to trial, the parties settled before a verdict came down.

He lied to NCAA investigators when asked about gambling, and did not honestly discuss the situation with the NCAA until he had met with UW officials. Many people would do this. The NCAA lied about their existing bylaws at the time Skippy was first contacted.

I think he has been unfairly miscast as a total scumbag. By no means do I think Skippy is an upstanding individual, but I do think the public's perception of Skippy is not in line with his past conduct.

Where there is smoke there is fire; he is a slickster - he left 2 programs under shady circumstances. He bends the rules and is not straighforward with the details. He is an attorney I believe. Is he a felon - no. Would you trust him? I do not.

One of my friends was recruited by him, and all he had to say was that Rick came off as a real slick car salesman. He was smooth, but just seemed like an fake rat...

On a completely different topic. Do you think he comes after Hagan and asks him to be on the staff? He won't come after Cabral, and Cabral wouldn't even want to leave CU. However, Hagan...??...I really hope not.

well, so much for my theory that the weeze's contract is especially tight on the subject of ncaa violations. according to news reports (quoting the ucla ad), secondary violations aren't immediate grounds for termination because, basically, "every program has those."

i guess the bruins DO want to be like usc. with skippy playing fast and loose, recruiting in socal is going to be difficult for our Buffs.
