Running Back situation

Now with the Gates debacle, what are our chances of getting a premium prospect? With Charles and Ellis gone, this could be be a major problem for next year. Hawkins has got to take the responsiblity for this since there is now only 1 RB recruit. With just a few weeks left, I would hate to see us waste a scholarship on a mediocre player just to fill a need. You can never run short on RB's and QB's.

Yeah! Where is our other 4* RB!

Ellis whas alright. But losing Charles hurts. I am confident that Sumler and Lock will progress into decent RB's.

I agree. Hawk is a horrible recruiter. Polk is only rated as the 12 best RB in the nation.

You mean like Kai Maiava?

Don't forget we lose Ellis' stellar pass blocking skills... somebody needs to step up in that department. I guess we find out Feb. 6th on where we are at RB...

Buffs already have one premium prospect lined up - Polk. And there's a high likelihood Scott will sign as well (JMO, but I think he's a Buff). I would have loved for Gates to make it in, and hopefully he still will, but even without him here, Buffs will be OK at RB.

We're dooooooooommmed. Dooooooomed I say:cry:

Did you see the video highlights of Major? He will be our new running back.

Also, why do I get the music from Bionic Man in my head ever time I hear his name?:smile2:

Your'e right , not to worry - Sumler was a real stud last year. Check those stats.

You clearly haven't been paying attention. The Buffs are very much in the mix for Darrell Scott, the #1 RB prospect in the entire country. If you wonder why people are ragging on you, that's why.

But that would be good news. 77 doesn't do good news. Kind of like bagging on Sumler's stats and ignoring Lockridge's, which are very impressive.

If you add together Jimmy Buff during the season and Buffsyko during recruiting time, you get 77 Buff - 12 months a year...

Calm down Polk is on the way and maybe Scott. IMO Lockridge is going to be a terrific out of the backfield option and change of pace. He was getting about 6 ypc until the last few games.

I chimed in at the same time as you Junction. I guess we agree on Lockridge.

I also haven't given up on Sumler, although it seems like a lot of people got down on him. But either way, Polk and Lockridge are a damn good start on a RB future, add in Gates and Scott if those both came through and it would be an embarassment of riches...

I'm up on Scott - from what I read he ain't comming to CU.

If he doesn't come so what.:violin: Polk, Lockridge and Sumler>Charles, Ellis and Sumler. Why do you not acknowledge Lockridge? He's not Daniel Jolly -3 yards and a cloud of dust!!

What, did you read his diary?
Nobody really knows where he is going. I haven't ragged on Hawkins since he has been here - I'm giving him a full 3 years. The Gates thing seemed like a risk from the git go. He was supposed to be our big help at running back last year- he was part of the 2007 class right? I'm just not big on JC's. He didn't qualify in 2007 so we take a chance on him in 2008. I think Hawkins should have concentrated on someone who had less baggage. If Scott comes through then all is fine - which I hope will happen. Hey, we are all Buff fans and want success for the team. Just because you disagree with the coach over a recruit doesn't make you any less a fan.

I don't doubt you as a fan. You just have an extreme view on this subject. Gates and Scott not coming are not the death of the ground game. It seems as though a lot of fans need to stop  Scott and look at what we have coming and already on the roster. Believe it or not we have RB's.

What recruit do you disagree with? Gates? I think that Hawkins is clearly not counting on Gates to come in this year but wants to keep the door open because the Buffs could use the depth. Last year he got Lockridge as well (who appears to be the real deal). One would assume that Hawkins would have pursued a better recruit last year if one was available. After a 2-10 year, it's hard to pull 5* recruits out of the ether.

So, yes, if Gates, Polk and Scott don't show up then the Buffs are very thin at running back but the prevailing view is that at least 2 will be Buffs next year.

And Hawkins went out and got Ray Polk. Polk and Scott would be quite a duo for one class.

Also keep in mind that at the end of 2006, when Hawk and co. were in the throws of recruiting the 2007 class, Thomas Perez was on the roster.

He didn't flunk out until after the Spring or Summer school terms, in either case well after there was anything Hawk could do about it from a recruiting stand point.

In other words, this was what the 2008 RB cast looked like after the Feb. 2007 signing date:

1. Perez (Sr.)
2. PT Gates (Jr./Sr. - depending on whether he redshirted)
3. Kevin Moyd (Jr.)
4. Sumler (Soph.)
5. Lockridge (Fresh./Soph. - depending on whether he redshirted)
6 - 10. The hand-full of walkons and 2008 recruits.

It is tough to blame Hawk for not going after more block-buster RB recruits when there were more running backs than offensive linemen on the roster. He had running backs and no one to block for them.

Losing Perez hurt, and if Gates does not make it, then that is a double whammy. But that is the way it rolls sometimes.

I still have some hope that Moyd will step up. The kid was the starting RB for the best HS team in Florida (arguably the best HS football state in the Union), so he isn't chopped liver. Hagen had some very positive things to say about him in the fall, but what kept him relegated to special teams was his need to improve his pass blocking. If Moyd can do that, we could see him with a lot more touches.

I am not giving up on Gates...he will be a Buff - I can feel it. Maybe another beer and I will see it.

I would be VERY happy with a backfield mix of Polk, Lock, Sumler and Gates. I also believe that we will have another great guy in that backfield allowing us to get very creative with our talent.

DO YOU BELIEVE?
